Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start from Thomas More's fictional island country, where there is no private property or locks on doors, where gold is used for chamber pots and chains for the few criminals who provide slave labor. What is this place?

Answer: Utopia

Thomas More wrote his book "Utopia" in Latin and it was published in 1516. Other interesting aspects of the Utopian society are free medical care, a law that punishes fornicators with an enforced lifetime of celibacy, mandatory communal dining, and a requirement that residents must switch houses every ten years.

While many believe "utopia" to be a combination of Greek words that mean "good place", in actuality, "utopia" more than likely is formed through the combination of Greek words that mean "no place". Thus, More is more likely making an argument that the attainment of a perfect human society is impossible.
2. Now, drop a letter from the previous answer and rearrange the remaining letters to create a word that refers to a paved, usually uncovered outdoor area next to a house.

Answer: patio

"Patio" in the English language is borrowed from the Spanish "patio" for "courtyard" or "forecourt". Patios are typically used for dining, drinking, playing games, and other social activities. While many are made of concrete, just as many rely on other hard flat materials such as fired clay, stones, and bricks.
3. Next, drop another letter and rearrange the remaining letters to create a word that refers to "an extremely small amount".

Answer: iota

The use of "iota" to mean "an extremely small amount" is a figurative one. Technically, iota is the ninth letter in the Greek alphabet. However, many associate the word with a "trace amount" or "a mite" because of Jesus's use of the word during the Sermon on the Mount; at one point, Jesus explains that "not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished" (Matthew 5:18, ESV).
4. Once again, drop a letter and rearrange the remaining letters to create a word that denotes a cereal plant (or its grain), used for both human and domestic animal consumption.

Answer: oat

Oats are typically considered one of the healthiest grains for human consumption. They are rich in protein, carbohydrates, dietary fiber, B vitamins, and manganese. However, they also tend to be higher in fat content than other grains. Interestingly, some have also used oat grass medically to treat urinary tract infections, osteoporosis, and irregular or painful menstruation.
5. One last time, drop a letter and rearrange the remaining to create a word some British speakers use to express their gratitude in an informal manner.

Answer: ta

The origin of the use of the word "ta" for "thank you" doesn't appear to be a very certain one. Most claim that people wishing to appear less coldly formal began to borrow "ta" from the language of infants. A few, however, claim that the expression is a shortened version of the Scottish Gaelic phrase for thank you: "Tapadh leat".
6. At this point, add a letter to the previous answer and rearrange the letters to create a word that can refer to a decree or statute as well as to a division of a dramatic performance.

Answer: act

In the United States of America, two famous acts of the twentieth century are the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which outlawed the practice of discrimination, and the Volstead Act or National Prohibition Act of 1919 which enabled enforcement of the Eighteenth Amendment prohibiting alcohol.
7. Again, add a letter to the previous answer, rearrange the letters, and create the name of the softest mineral known to human beings.

Answer: talc

Talc has many purposes. It is used in the making of paper, plastic, paint, ceramics, rubber, food additives, medication, cosmetics, and baby powder. Many pediatricians now recommend that parents not use baby powder because the fine particles that float through the air can create breathing problems as well as damage the lungs.

A 1993 study found that cancerous tumors developed in rats that were made to inhale significant quantities of talc five days a week for one hundred and thirteen weeks. In February of 2016, a St. Louis, Missouri, jury awarded millions of dollars to be paid by Johnson & Johnson to the family of a woman who died of ovarian cancer that had been linked to her use of talcum powder.
8. Yet again, add a letter to the previous answer to create a word referring to a T-shaped piece of metal or wood attached to a pier or dock and around which a rope may be tied to moor a boat. This word may also be used to refer to a piece of metal, rubber, or plastic attached to the sole of a shoe to help create surer footing.

Answer: cleat

The word "cleat" may also refer to a wedge-shaped block of wood or metal attached to a surface to create support. This use of the word is closer to its original meaning. The Middle English "clete" and the earlier Old English form of the word meant "wedge".
9. And once again, add a letter to the answer of the previous question, rearrange the letters and give me a verb that means "to discover the exact place or position of someone or something".

Answer: locate

The word "locate" as we understand its meaning probably emerged during the 1650s. It stems from the Latin "locatus", which is the past participle of "locare", the verb meaning "to place, put, set, dispose, or arrange". "Locare" itself is a derivation of the noun "locus", which means "place".
10. Finally, add one more letter to the answer to the previous question and rearrange them to create the revered name of the castle and court associated with one legendary king whose father was Uther Pendragon.

Answer: Camelot

King Arthur's Camelot was not part of the early original British stories but was added later to the French romances of the twelfth century. In the earlier British tales, Arthur's court is typically located in Caerleon of Wales. Interestingly, Camelot, as a fictional place, has no historical site. Thus, as Arthurian scholar Norris J. Lacy remarks, "Camelot, located no where in particular, can be anywhere", which works perfectly for those who hold on to romantic ideals and never give up on finding their utopia.
