Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Start with a word that means, for example, to get up in the morning.

Answer: RISE

You might say, "I rise at the same time every morning" or "Rise and shine!" to wake up someone still sleeping. The word rise can also be used to mean to go up or to stand up, in addition to getting up. It can also be a noun, as in a rise in prices.
2. To the previous word, add one letter and scramble to come up with one of the signs of the Zodiac.

Answer: ARIES

RISE + A, scrambled = ARIES

Aries, a Fire sign represented by the ram, is the first sign of the zodiac and covers the period from March 21 to April 19. If you were born between these dates, Aries is your star sign. Ariens are said to be outgoing, natural leaders who are courageous and sometimes stubborn.
3. Add a letter to the previous word and scramble to come up with a disease that affects animals, and humans if they are bitten by an infected animal.

Answer: RABIES

ARIES + B, scrambled = RABIES

Rabies is a virus that is transmitted among mammals, usually through a bite; when a human becomes infected it is almost always from a dog bite. Humans who are bitten by a strange animal, of any kind, should seek medical attention. Symptoms may take a while to show up but the treatment (a vaccine) must be administered before the serious symptoms occur, or it will almost certainly be too late.
4. Drop a letter from the previous word and scramble the letters to come up with some grizzly animals.

Answer: BEARS

RABIES - I, scrambled = BEARS

The Ursidae family is comprised of many different types of bears found in Europe, Asia and the Americas. The grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) is a specific type of brown bear found in North America. Grizzlies can be dangerous to humans, but typically only attack humans if they feel threatened or if they think their cubs are threatened.
5. Drop a letter from the previous word and scramble to come up with a word that means periods of time.

Answer: ERAS

BEARS - B, scrambled = ERAS

An era is a period of time, often a significantly long period but it need not be a predetermined length of time. In terms of social history (rather than geological eras, for example) era is usually marked by particular trends such as politics, fashion or popular culture. The reign of a particular monarch could be considered an era, e.g. the Elizabethan era. The Elizabethan era is marked not only by Elizabeth I being queen but also by the social norms and art of the time period.
6. Add a letter to the previous word and scramble to come up with a word indicating members of nobility on par with Counts.

Answer: EARLS

ERAS + L, scrambled = EARLS

An Earl and a Count are both somewhat in the middle of the ranking of nobility. It ranks lower than Duke, Marquis, Prince, Monarch and Emperor but above Viscount, Baron and Lord (not an exhaustive list of noble titles). There is no female equivalent that directly matches the title of Earl. Countess is the only equivalent female title; the daughters of an Earl are given the title Lady.
7. Drop a letter from the previous word and scramble to come up with a marine mammal, or a singer who married Heidi Klum.

Answer: SEAL

EARLS - R, scrambled = SEAL

Seals, the marine mammals, belong to the pinniped group which also includes sea lions. Seal the musician is a British singer who married model Heidi Klum in 2005. One of Seal's best known songs is "Kiss From a Rose", made especially popular being on the soundtrack of the 1995 movie "Batman Forever".
8. Add a letter to the previous word and scramble to come up with a word meaning untrue.

Answer: FALSE

SEAL + F, scrambled = FALSE

False can also mean 'not real', such as when talking about false teeth or false eyelashes, or even a false alarm. It is also used to mean 'misleading', such as a false promise or false advertising. Yet another meaning is 'erroneous', for example a false accusation or a false conviction.
9. Add a letter to the previous word and scramble to come up with a slang term for a bunch of guys.

Answer: FELLAS

FALSE + L, scrambled = FELLAS

'Fellas' is used good naturedly, usually when casually referring to a group of males (e.g. "I'm going out for a beer with the fellas"). It is derived from the word 'fellow'.
10. Drop a letter from the previous word and scramble to get a word that follows, for example, Angel and Niagara.

Answer: FALLS

FELLAS - E, scrambled = FALLS

In the context of this question, 'falls' is a shortened form of 'waterfalls'. Niagara Falls are actually three waterfalls (Horseshoe, American and Bridal Veil) located along the Canada-US border. Angel Falls, located in Venezuela, is the world's highest uninterrupted waterfall. 'Falls' can of course be used as a verb, both literally ("He always falls when it's icy outside") and figuratively ("She falls in love every ten minutes").
