Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Using the letters in HEART, add a consonant, mix them around, to range in on a big German cannon used in WWI.

Answer: bertha

One of the largest artillery pieces ever made was the 42 cm kurze Marinekanone, known to both sides as 'Big Bertha'. The weapon weighed over 40 tonnes and could lob a 42cm caliber explosive shell for over nine kilometres.
2. Using only the letters in HEART, find the only planet that is NOT named after a Greek or Roman god or goddess.

Answer: earth

The word 'earth' has an interesting etymology, with similar words found in many languages- 'Ard' in Arabic, 'Ergir in Armenian, 'erets' in Hebrew and 'Erde' in German. At its most fundamental level, the word 'earth' simply means 'ground'.

All the other planets are named after ancient Roman gods and goddesses, with the exception of Uranus, who was the Greek god of the sky.
3. Pick four of the letters from HEART to find a leveret that has grown up.

Answer: hare

A leveret is capable of looking after itself shortly after birth, while a baby rabbit (a kit) is dependent on parents for food and protection. In addition, hares do not live in burrows, and are generally larger than rabbits.
4. Add a letter to HEART to find an occupation that was driven mad by mercury poisoning.

Answer: hatter

Mercury is a neurotoxin, and can have a profound effect on brain function. Continued exposure to its fumes can lead to psychosis, insomnia, memory loss and damage to many other bodily organs. The condition is recognised in Lewis Carroll's classic story of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland', by the rather quirky character, The Mad Hatter.

Mercury was used by hatmakers (hatters), to cure the felt used in the manufacturing process.
5. Drop a letter from HEART and rip a lachrymal output.

Answer: tear

A 'lachrymal output' is simply a fancy term for a teardrop, produced in the lachrymal glands. Tears keep the eyeball surface moist and wash away any debris.

The words 'tear' (rip) and 'tear' (the water in your eye) are heteronyms, meaning they have the same spelling, but different pronunciations.
6. Add a P to HEART and name a type of volcanic rock.

Answer: tephra

Tephra is basically any rock or ash that is tossed out of a volcano. They are also known as pyroclasts, which means 'fire' and 'broken'.
7. Duplicate one of the letters in HEART and find the location of a Dickensian insect.

Answer: hearth

Finding a cricket on your hearth is a sign of good luck, as told by Charles Dickens' short story 'The Cricket on the Hearth', written in 1846. It is a Christmas story about the delightfully named John Peerybingle and his wife, Dot.
8. Drop a letter from HEART, and find the the Greek Mother of the Gods, or a large South American bird.

Answer: rhea

The Greek gods, Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus were all children of Rhea and her husband (and brother), Cronus.

A rhea is a large, flightless bird that is found over a wide area of South America. It derives its name from the aforementioned Greek goddess.
9. Obscure Word Alert! Add a letter to HEART, shake them around a bit, and look for a word that means '24 sheaves of corn'. (Hint - the added letter is in the last quarter of the alphabet).

Answer: thrave

The word is used in northern England and Scotland, and by extension, means 'a couple of dozen', or 'a handful'.
10. By adding a letter to HEART, you will get a ring of flowers, used as decorations.

Answer: wreath

Wreaths are used for both joyous and sad occasions- they are used as Christmas decorations, or as an announcement of a death.
