Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Improvement 1: Is seven letters long

Answer: Correct

First of all, an explanation of the solution:

Improvement 5 has more letters than both improvements 3 and 4, therefore it has to have at least 8 letters and must be Increase, Progress or Regenerate. However, we also know that it starts with the same letter as Improvement 3 so it must be Regenerate and Improvement 3 must be Revise. As Improvement 10 has the same number of letters as Improvement 3, it must be Enrich and Improvement 9 must be Enhance (as it comes directly before Improvement 10 alphabetically).

Improvement 2 cannot be Advance or Correct as it comes after two other improvements alphabetically. However, it also has to come before Improvement 10 (Enrich) alphabetically, so it has to be Develop. This leaves Improvement 7 to be Advance - the only remaining improvement containing a 'v' - and Improvement 1 to be Correct (as it has to come ahead of Improvement 2 alphabetically).

That leaves Increase, Progress and Upgrade. Improvement 8 does not end with an 'e', so that has to be Progress. Then as Improvement 6 comes after Improvement 5 alphabetically, it has to be Upgrade and Improvement 4 must be Increase.

---

To correct something means to put right an error. In general terms, you would expect that if something has had errors corrected then it has also had its quality improved.
2. Improvement 2: Alphabetically, this comes after Improvements 1 and 7 but before Improvement 10

Answer: Develop

Something doesn't have to be factually incorrect to be marked as 'needs improvement'. If your work is too simplistic or too short, then simply developing it a little further and providing more information could constitute an improvement.
3. Improvement 3: Starts with the same letter as Improvement 5

Answer: Revise

If something has been revised then someone has likely put extra thought into its contents and decided to change some of it. Generally speaking, it is likely that this done with the aim of improving it rather than deliberately making it worse...
4. Improvement 4: Has more letters than Improvement 3, but fewer than Improvement 5

Answer: Increase

In field athletics events such as shot put, javelin and discus, increasing your personal best is a good thing and represents an improvement in your ability. For runners though, increasing times are definitely not an improvement.
5. Improvement 5: Appears ahead of Improvement 6 alphabetically

Answer: Regenerate

Regenerate can mean to recreate or reform something and could in this sense quite simply mean that you end up with a copy of the original with no improvements whatsoever. However, in certain senses it is used to imply that the new product is an improvement on its predecessor - a good example is an urban regeneration project where old, disused or dilapidated buildings are torn down and replaced with new, more useful ones.
6. Improvement 6: Begins with a vowel

Answer: Upgrade

If you are offered an upgrade then chances are your new acquisition will be an improvement on the previous version. For example, mobile (cell) phone companies will often offer their customers a newer model of handset after a year or two. If they tried to give you a 1980s-style brick instead of the latest smartphone then I very much doubt that most people would consider that an improvement...
7. Improvement 7: Is one of the three improvements to include the letter 'v'

Answer: Advance

Certain types of advances, particularly medical ones such as new treatments or a better understanding of how diseases spread, tend to be improvements. However, greater knowledge is not always an improvement depending on your point of view - advances in human understanding of things like nuclear power might be considered a good thing (greater options for the generation of power) or a very bad thing (dangerous radiation and the risk of nuclear fallout).
8. Improvement 8: Does not end with the letter 'e'

Answer: Progress

Progress can relate to both improving your physical position - for example, getting closer to the finishing line in a marathon - or improving the position of a piece of work, such as completing another chapter if you are writing a novel. By definition it is generally considered a positive development - although the rather more abstract "progress of time" may not be a good thing if a deadline is looming and you are somewhat underprepared...
9. Improvement 9: Comes immediately before Improvement 10, alphabetically

Answer: Enhance

To enhance something is to improve its quality, value or strength. It can also mean to make something bigger through magnification - although in that sense you are enhancing your vision of the object rather than the object itself. The enhancement of the value of a product may also only be a good thing if you are trying to sell it; the prospective purchaser might not be so pleased.
10. Improvement 10: Has the same number of letters as Improvement 3.

Answer: Enrich

If you take the definition of enrich to be that someone has become richer or wealthier then this may not be considered to be a universally good thing - especially from particular political viewpoints. However, it is generally used in the positive sense, especially when using the term enrichment in the sense of improvement or enhancement of someone's quality of life.
