Answer: david beckham

Originally from London, David Beckham came from a family of Manchester United supporters, and was part of a generation of young United players that also included Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, during Sir Alex Ferguson's lengthy tenure as manager. He won several trophies with United before heading to Real Madrid in 2003. He was capped 115 times for England.

'Spice Girls' is a reference to Victoria Adams, one of the English girl group nicknamed 'Posh Spice' for her love of designer clothes and reserved demeanour. She became Victoria Beckham when she married David in 1999. Beckham's team mate Gary Neville was best man. Beckham became as famous for his celebrity marriage as he did for his footballing career.
2. Using the code, see if you can decipher the name of this midfielder, who spent most of his career at Liverpool and is considered to be one of their greatest players of all time. 783836 4377273

Answer: steven gerrard

Steven Gerrard came up through the academy ranks at Liverpool to become their captain in 2003. He played a key role in Liverpool's Champions' League win against AC Milan in Istanbul in 2005, when Liverpool came back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3, with the match going to penalties. He also scored twice against West Ham United in the 2006 FA Cup final. He would go on to make over 500 appearances for Liverpool, before leaving in 2015. As an England player, he was capped 114 times and scored 21 goals.

'Don't slip up' is a reference to an emotional comment made by Steven Gerrard to his team mates after Liverpool beat Manchester City: "This does not [censored] slip now! This is gone, we go to Norwich, exactly the same. We go again." Ironically, Gerrard later slipped and fell over in a match against Chelsea, with Demba Ba picking up the ball and scoring.
3. Using the code, try and figure out the name of this former England captain and forward, who started out as a young player at Everton before winning several trophies at Manchester United. 92963 766639

Answer: wayne rooney

Wayne Rooney was a product of Everton's academy, making his debut for the senior team in 2002 aged just 16. In 2004, he transferred to Manchester United, where he spent the majority of his career and became club captain in 2014. While there, he won five titles and one FA Cup. He went on to captain the England team in 2016 after Steven Gerrard retired from international football; he was capped 120 times and scored 53 goals, making him one of the highest England goalscorers. He was also one of Manchester United's top scorers, with a total of 253 goals.

'Just Enough Education to Perform' is an album by the Stereophonics, a Welsh rock band. Rooney is a big fan and had the name of the album tattooed on his arm. He and his wife Coleen invited the band to play at their wedding reception.
4. Using the code, see if you can guess the name of this former Chelsea midfielder, considered to be a legend by Chelsea fans, who went on to manage Derby County, and who comes from a famous footballing family. 37265 5267273

Answer: frank lampard

Frank Lampard is the son of the former West Ham United player Frank Lampard Sr., the cousin of former Liverpool player Jamie Redknapp, and nephew of football manager Harry Redknapp. He became Chelsea's all-time top goalscorer, with 211 goals in all competitions, and signed for them from West Ham United in 2001, leaving in 2014 to go to Manchester City. He was capped 109 times for England. After retiring from football, he went on to manage Derby County.

'Magic footballs' is a reference to 'Frankie's Magic Football', a series of children's books co-authored by Lampard.
5. Using the code, can you work out the name of this striker who captained England in the 2018 World Cup, and who scored several goals for Tottenham Hotspur? 42779 5263

Answer: harry kane

Harry Kane, the youngest of the players featured in this quiz, played for Arsenal as a child, before joining their rivals Tottenham Hotspur in 2004. (Former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger stated in 2015 that he was disappointed Arsenal had let Kane go!) He made his senior team debut for Spurs in 2011 in a Europa League qualifier against Hearts, and scored his first goal against Shamrock Rovers that season in another Europa League match. He was voted as the PFA Young Player of the Year in 2014-2015, and was the Premier League's top goalscorer the following season. Although Kane could have qualified for the Republic of Ireland, as his father's family are Irish, he chose to play for England, and was called up for the senior team in 2016. As captain in the 2018 World Cup, he scored a hat trick against Panama, making him the third England player to do so in a World Cup match.

'He'll blow you away' is a reference to the fact that 'Harry Kane' sounds like 'hurricane', a fact not unnoticed by many Tottenham fans.
6. Using the code, see if you can figure out the name of this former Leicester City, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur striker, who went on to become a TV presenter after he retired. 4279 5463537

Answer: gary lineker

Gary Lineker's clubs included Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Leicester City (his boyhood club, of whom he later became an honorary vice president, and also gave them financial backing), Barcelona and Nagoya Grampus 8 in Japan. He was capped for England 80 times, scoring 4 goals during Italia '90 and forming a partnership with Paul Gascoigne. He earned the nickname of 'Mr Nice Guy' due to being one of the few footballers never to have been booked or sent off in his career. After retiring from football, he became a pundit on 'Match of the Day', and later went on to present it. He presented one episode in his underwear, after promising to do so if Leicester City won the title in 2016.

'Crisps' is a reference to Walkers, a Leicester-based brand of crisps which Lineker has repeatedly endorsed over the years, sometimes sharing advertising space with other celebrities such as the Spice Girls. He is often depicted trying to steal people's crisps.
7. Using the code, figure out the name of this Geordie striker and former England captain who led Blackburn Rovers to a title in 1995. You're more likely to see him on 'Match of the Day' these days, but not in black and white. 2526 7432737

Answer: alan shearer

Alan Shearer was not only Newcastle United's record goalscorer, but one of the Premier League's record goalscorers, with 283 league goals and 411 in all competitions, including internationals; he was capped 63 times for England. Along with fellow striker Chris Sutton, he played a key role in Blackburn Rovers' 1995 title win but left in 1996 to join Newcastle. He had an unsuccessful stint as Newcastle's interim manager in 2009, and went on to become one of the regular pundit team on 'Match of the Day'.

Why the sheep? Sheep get their wool cut off by a 'shearer'. 'Black and white' is a reference to the black and white striped kit of Newcastle United.
8. Using the code, have a guess at the name of this title-winning Manchester City goalkeeper and England Number 1. 563 4278

Answer: joe hart

Joe Hart, real name Charles, was called up by Fabio Capello for friendlies in 2008, eventually becoming part of the main England team. He was England's main goalkeeper in Euro 2012 and the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016; in the group stage of Euro 2012, he made more saves than any goalkeeper, although he conceded a winning Andrea Pirlo penalty in the quarter finals against Italy. He was Manchester City's main goalkeeper from 2007 to 2016, winning two league titles and one FA Cup.

'Don't forget your shampoo' is a reference to Hart's endorsement of Head & Shoulders shampoo. Fans would sing 'where's your dandruff gone?' at him at matches.
9. We're almost there! Use the code to work out the name of this former Manchester United and Queens Park Rangers defender. 746 337346263

Answer: rio ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand is the cousin of former Queens Park Rangers striker Les Ferdinand and has a younger brother, Anton, who is also a footballer. As a player, he won the league six times with Manchester United, with a total of 312 appearances. He also played for West Ham United, and was capped 81 times for England. Outside football, he appeared on the documentary 'Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum & Dad', talking about the loss of his wife Rebecca to cancer and being a single father. He also tried his hand at boxing, but was unable to qualify for a professional boxing licence.

'He doesn't dance on the sand' is a reference to 'Rio', a song by Duran Duran, which features the line 'Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand.'
10. Finally, use the code to figure out the name of this former Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio and Glasgow Rangers midfielder, who's as famous for his antics off the pitch as what he did on it. 7285 427264463

Answer: paul gascoigne

Paul Gascoigne, aka Gazza, was one of England's more memorable players in the late '80s and early-to-mid 1990s, not only for his prowess on the pitch - he was capped 57 times and scored 4 goals - but for his chaotic personal life and celebrations. These included reenacting a drunken night out with team mates in a Euro 1996 match against Scotland (the 'dentist's chair' celebration, where players were photographed lying in a dentist's chair and having drinks poured into their mouths), and pretending to play the flute in a Rangers match. Steven Gerrard, who would later go on to manage Rangers, cited Gascoigne as his footballing hero.

'Italia 90 upset him' is a reference to the footage of Gascoigne crying after he was booked during England's semi-final against West Germany, realising that he would miss the final if England won (they didn't, thanks to missed penalties by Chris Waddle and Stuart Pearce).
