Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From the beginnings of his late night show on NBC, all the way to his post-primetime spot on CBS, David Letterman has had the same musical band leader and sidekick with him since 1982. Also the composer of Dave's theme song, who is David Letterman's long time sidekick?

Answer: Paul Shaffer

Paul Shaffer's earliest break was being a member of the "Saturday Night Live" Band. But he hooked up with David Letterman to put together a show a little quirkier than Johnny Carson's that would extend the late night talk show genre each night for NBC. In 2012, David Letterman will have been in a late night timeslot longer than Johnny Carson, albeit on two different networks.
2. One of the more trusty sidekicks from the golden age of television was Tonto, the companion of the Lone Ranger on the show "The Lone Ranger". Tonto was played by Harold J. Smith. But most know him as his screen name. How was Harold billed on in the show's credits?

Answer: Jay Silverheels

Jay Silverheels actually earned his name from his lacrosse ability in college, it was not a Native American name given to him. His athletic ability lent to his convincing onscreen presence. Jay shows amazing sidekick presence also in his longevity with Tonto: He played Tonto 217 times on the television show's history, and the man synonymous with the Lone Ranger, Clayton Moore, only played the Ranger 169 times. but Clayton was the one who got all the press.
3. In the "Lord of the Rings" movie trilogy, Frodo was the one who was burdened with getting the ring to its final destination. But his sidekick for the trip, the one who was burdened with keeping Frodo safe, was Samwise Gamgee. However, on the awards circuit, the actor who played Samwise was the one who got the bulk of the award nominations. Who was the actor to don the hairy feet in his role of Samwise?

Answer: Sean Astin

The four actors listed were the four sent on the quest, but it was Frodo and Samwise who completed the task at hand. Sean Astin would make a name for himself in the playing of the title character of the movie "Rudy", but Samwise Gamgee was the role that broke him into earning some hardware for his acting career.

He earned the Phoenix Critics Award, the Seattle Film Critics Award and the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor.
4. On the 1970's/1980's ABC television show "Fantasy Island" the owner and operator of the island, Mr. Rourke, ran the mysterious island and all of its guests with panache, but not without help. For many of those years, his sidekick Tattoo was by his side, assisting with many of the behind-the-scenes activities on the island. Who was it that personified Tattoo for six years?

Answer: Herve Villechaize

Herve Villechaize was the one responsible for countless people looking up in the air during the beginning of the 1980's shouting "De Plane! De Plane!". He was a French actor who also appeared on the James Bond film, "The Man With the Golden Gun". He passed away in 1993.
5. Many people look at the original "Star Wars" as the best of the eventual six that were made. And some think the reason was we were introduced to Han Solo, the swashbuckling personality that was a contrast to the zen stylings of the Jedi around them. But Han Solo wouldn't be anywhere in that galaxy far, far away without his trusty sidekick. Who was side by side with Han wherever he went?

Answer: Chewbacca

Chewbacca never said anything you could understand, it spoke Wookiee. But you knew what he was THINKING. And he was loyal to Han, and you could tell he was an emotional wreck when Han was in danger and he couldn't help out. And it never hurts to have a sidekick who was good in a fight.
6. Many agree that Michael Jordan was arguably the greatest the National Basketball League has ever seen. But in terms of sports sidekicks, he may have had the best in not just basketball, but all sports. Michael didn't have him as a teammate until 1987, but once they joined up, the two won six titles together. Number #33 to Michael Jordan's #23, who was this NBA sidekick?

Answer: Scottie Pippen

Scottie Pippen exhibited all qualities of a sidekick: He had supreme talent, yet not as good as Jordan's, and he knew exactly when to back off and let the superhero take the forefront. Scottie's defense was incredible, and that lent to the end success of the team.
7. It started as a sketch near the end of an episode of "Saturday Night Live", and ended up the topic of two movies. "Wayne's World" centered on the public access program of the fictional Wayne Campbell, played by Mike Myers. Dana Carvey played Garth, his sidekick on the television show and in their fictional lives. Wayne and Garth appeared in two movies together, springboarding off the success of the sketch's popularity. Can you give me what sidekick Garth's last name is?

Answer: Algar

Garth Algar was as important to the success of "Wayne's World" as the character it was named after. He always backed up Wayne's opinion with an added tidbit of information that anchored the point. And he rarely left Wayne's side, and was a perfect opponent for Wayne in street hockey. "CAR!"
8. Most of the success from pop music's "Wham!" was from the lead singer, George Michael. And it was George that had continued success as a solo artist. But Wham! never would have been what they are without George's proverbial sidekick. Who formed the other half of "Wham!"?

Answer: Andrew Ridgeley

All four choices on this question could be considered sidekicks (ok, maybe not Keith Richards), but it is Andrew Ridgeley who formed the other half of Wham! He tried to continue on in music after the breakup of the group, but he had minimal success.
9. Sherlock Holmes, in movies, television and literature, has always solved and fought crimes with the help of his partner and sidekick, Dr. Watson. But most know him only as Dr. Watson. However in literature, he did have his full name in print a handful of times. What is Dr. Watson's full name?

Answer: John H. Watson

John H. Watson, M.D. also doubled as the narrator for most of the stories written by Arthur Conan Doyle. Doyle made it a point to make Watson ordinary compared to the intelligence of Holmes. But what Watson did know complemented Holmes, and that makes for a perfect sidekick. Dr. Watson is also the inspiration for the name of Microsoft's program debugger, "Dr. Watson".
10. Never one to get in the way of his boss's success, yet always there to make sure he didn't kill himself, Tim Taylor's sidekick on the television show "Home Improvement" seemed to know more than Tim in most aspects of shop working. But he was always willing to step back and allow Tim Taylor the glory. However in many cases, the step back was more for self-preservation. Who was Tim Taylor's sidekick character?

Answer: Al Borland

We have a collection of television sidekicks for answers on this question, but it was Al Borland, played by Richard Karn, who was the organizational complement to the chaos of Tim Taylor, played by Tim Allen. He also played the straight-man to the comedic stylings of Tim Taylor as well. Critics tended not to like the show, saying it was somewhat pandering, but 20 million plus weekly for an audience were the numbers that counted.
