Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Flat sandal with a Y-shaped toe thong and no heel strap

Answer: Flip Flops

Thong sandals go by many names in various countries: thongs, jandals, slops. In Britain and the US, flip flops get their name from the sounds made while walking. They are often for casual, hot weather wear.
2. Closed-toe shoe with a buckled strap across the instep

Answer: Mary Jane

In the early 1900s, the Brown Shoe Company used the comic strip characters from "Buster Brown" to advertise their shoes. The comic strip characters, Buster and Mary Jane, wore the closed toe shoe. Typically a boy or girl's shoe, the leather, sturdy shoe had a thin, buckled strap over the instep with a flat sole. Today's Mary Jane is mainly worn by females.
3. The shoe with the characteristic perforated and serrated toe caps

Answer: Brogues

Brogues have pieced leather uppers with holes perforated across the top and serrated edges. Historically, the holes were intended to let water drain from the shoe. In today's time, the holes aren't quite designed for function as much as they are for looks. Wing tips are a very popular style of brogue in men's fashion.
4. A no-lace, leather slip-on shoe

Answer: Loafer

A loafer, sometimes called a slipper, has no laces and is usually flat and made of leather. Starting as casual shoes, they have evolved into lovely, dress shoes with the high end brands like Gucci. We can't fail to mention G.H. Bass's penny loafer!
5. Shoes designed for water craft

Answer: Boat shoes

Boat shoes were designed with cuts in the soles to prevent slipping on wet boat decking. Because they are worn in wet conditions, they are typically worn without socks. Boat shoes are laced and can be canvas or leather. Paul Sperry is the original designer. In the 1980s, Sperry Top-Siders were the college go-to footwear!
6. Foam clog shoes

Answer: Crocs

Crocs came on the scene in 2001 at a boat show in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Made from a foam resin called Croslite, Crocs are foam clog shoes originally made for boating. The clogs are designed to mold to your foot shape for comfort and ergonomics. They can be worn with or without a heel strap. The brand has evolved into making sandals, diabetic footwear and medical professional shoes.
7. A Duke's footwear

Answer: Wellingtons

The 1st Duke of Wellington had boots custom designed for him. They were a mid-calf leather boot with an almost flat heel that fit snug to the calf. They were used for riding horses but also in a more formal setting. After about 20 years, the boots were adapted to a vocational boot made of rubber to repel water, dirt and even chemicals. Rubber Wellingtons were used in both World Wars.
8. Footwear worn by ranch workers

Answer: Cowboy boots

Cowboy boots were specifically designed riding boots. Compared to other riding boots, the cowboy boots, more-pointed toe lets the foot get into the stirrup easier. The higher heel doesn't allow the foot to slip all the way through the stirrup and allows more safe, stable riding.

The sole of the boot has little to no tread which also makes it easier to get the foot in and out of the stirrup. The tall boot protects the lower leg from brush and keeps the foot dry. It even protects ranch workers from snake bites when not riding.
9. A rope-soled shoe

Answer: Espadrille

Espadrilles were originally worn by Spanish peasants as early as the 14th century. The flat soles were made of rope from Mediterranean grass and had a canvas upper. Some shoes even had long laced-ankle straps to keep the shoe on the foot. Modern-style espadrilles still have a canvas upper but the sole is of jute on a rubber base and can be flat or wedged.

Although you might find some with ankle straps, they typically have no straps.
10. The "make me taller" shoe

Answer: Elevator shoes

Elevator shoes are shoes with a built-in insole that "adds" height to your body frame. The height increase varies by shoe, but you can purchase 1 to 6-inch elevator shoes! It is like wearing a high heel but inside the shoe. It is rumored the shorter actors like Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr and Burt Reynolds have worn them for movies and pleasure. If you would rather convert a non-elevator shoe, you can purchase height-adding inserts, called shoe lifts.
