Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which duo had a No 2 hit in Britain in 1975 with 'Trail of the Lonesome Pine' from the film 'Way Out West' released in 1937?

Answer: Laurel and Hardy

Apparently, when Stan and Ollie were visiting Belfast, Ireland the churches all played "The Cuckoo Song" on their bells as their ship pulled into port. You don't get much more famous, or loved, than that! There are still pictures on display a few miles from where I live in Kent (England) showing them visiting the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch railway which I suspect may be due to the fact that it is near a golf course. Stan had trouble keeping Ollie away from them due to his passion for playing golf.
2. What is the name of the actress who starred in most of the "Road Movies" with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby?

Answer: Dorothy Lamour

There were seven "Road films", the last of which was "Hong Kong" in 1962 - 10 years after the previous one. Both Hope and Crosby were keen golfers and when asked how often he and Crosby played golf together Bob Hope replied, "Would you play with someone who moves their ball and cheats their score? Well, neither will he!"
3. What were the first names of Starsky and Hutch in the iconic 70s cop show?

Answer: Dave and Ken

Both Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul have done a lot of stage and TV work in England. Paul has appeared in some Christmas Pantomimes and David has performed in a variety of things but caused a commotion when he starred in "Jerry Springer - The Opera". Many protests from the Christian lobby to the BBC!
4. The truth about this duo is out there somewhere you just need to get out your torch and search for them! Who are they?

Answer: Mulder and Scully

Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny have both been busy making films and other TV since "X-Files" finished in 2002, including an "X-Files" film in 2008. Due to her living part of her childhood in England Gillian does a terrific English accent which led to the part of Lady Dedlock in the BBC production of "Bleak House" receiving plaudits and award nominations in 2005. David has received awards and nominations for his TV work post "X-Files" too.
5. One composed the music and the other wrote the lyrics which led to musical films like "Oklahoma", "Carousel", "South Pacific" and "The King and I". Who were they?

Answer: Rodgers and Hammerstein

Rodgers collaborated with other lyricists like Lorenz Hart - for example on "Pal Joey" - while Hammerstein worked with Jerome Kern on "Showboat", among other things.
6. This duo developed from Burlesque into movies through the 1940s and into the 1950s. Their comedy films were top box office earners of 1942 with a turnover of ten million dollars. In one film they also met Frankenstein but cross-talked him into submission! Who are they?

Answer: Abbott and Costello

Bud Abbott and Lou Costello had a successful professional relationship but personally were often not on good terms. At times they only spoke to each other while performing! They both gambled and drank and in 1956 the IRS caught up with them. They both had to liquidate their assets and the partnership too and forgo their film rights. They did some further work after this but not together.
7. Who are the two opinionated old gentlemen who sit in the balcony on "The Muppet Show" and dispense insults to all the performers?

Answer: Waldorf and Statler

The two old men are not short of a word or three to insult all the performers on "The Muppet show". Fozzy bear and Kermit seemed to get particularly harsh treatment.
8. In the BBC's classic children's programme, 'Bill and Ben the Flowerpot Men', who is the friend that lives between them?

Answer: Weed

Bill and Ben first appeared on "Watch with Mother" in 1952 until the 1960s. They were revived in the early 2000s in a more modern format. They are well remembered for their distinctive flob-ad-dob style language.
9. This pair made at least ten films together starting in 1933. One performed backwards and the other forwards - who were they?

Answer: Astaire and Rogers

Their first film was "Flying Down to Rio" and was the only one in which Ginger got top billing. Fred had a pretty good career for someone of whom it was said after an audition, "can't sing, can't act, balding - dances a little".
10. Two very famous actors have had some success with music on albums over the years as well as other notable film and TV work. They were known for two iconic sci-fi TV and film roles from the 1960s and way beyond. Who are two characters that they play who have boldly gone on and on?

Answer: Kirk and Spock

Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner continued to be an integral part of the "Star Trek" franchise over many years. I needn't mention how many spin-offs and films there have been, or how many people owe their careers to it. The inscrutable George Takei comes to England at Christmas to play in Pantomime (as the Chinese Emperor - no less) which confirms the enduring popularity of the "Star Trek" series.
