Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The very first "Donald, Mickey and Goofy" short comedy cartoon was released on March 16, 1935. What was the title of this classic?

Answer: Mickey's Service Station

"Mickey's Service Station" was directed by Ben Sharpsteen. Goofy, Mickey and Donald get separated from one another when they are supposed to perform a particular task assigned to them. The cartoon shows each of them trying to handle their own separate problems, which eventually lead to their becoming reunited and sharing in the success of their efforts.
2. Goofy has been a very popular character for over seventy years. He appears in both comic books and in comic strips everywhere. How many different countries has Goofy made such an impression in?

Answer: fifteen

Goofy has maintained a multimedia status since 1933. He appeared in daily comic strips, with Mickey Mouse, as a neighbor and sometimes as an associate of Mickey's. Eventually the story lines for the comics became tiresome so artist Floyd Gottfredson and his team developed new adventures, mostly in the case of Goofy, that clearly defined the personalities of the characters. Over time, Mickey relied on both Donald and Goofy, in many cartoon situations, as his "boon" companions. Now, over seventy years later, Goofy is still unbelievably popular all over the world.

He appears in comic books and also in comic strips that are published in fourteen languages and in fifteen countries.
3. How did Art Babbitt describe Goofy to his students at Disney studios?

Answer: All are correct

Art Babbitt, the creator of Goofy, described Goofy as "a composite of an everlasting optimist, a gullible Good Samaritan, a halfwit and a shiftless, good-natured hick. He is loose-jointed and gangly, but not rubbery." He used such description in the mid to late 1930s when he taught classes at the Disney studios for up and coming animators.

Goofy was also described as fast moving but preferred to avoid any overexertion, by taking whichever easy way out of things that he could come up with. He was described as one who accepts things as being the best and also as amusing. Goofy was also described as one who loves to help everyone, but rarely completes a task at hand due to his bumbling nature. He is very easily distracted.
4. Goofy is very popular world wide and has many strange names in other languages. How do you suppose Goofy is said in Danish?

Answer: Fedtmule

Fedtmule is indeed the Danish word for Goofy. Hessu Hopo is the Finnish way to say Goofy. Guffi is the way the Icelandic say Goofy and Pateta is the way the Portuguese say Goofy. He is called Dingo in Turkish, Jan "Janne" Langben in Swedish, Langbein in Norwegian and Pippo in Italian.
5. On May 25, 1932, Goofy was introduced to the world in a cartoon named "Mickey's Revue". What other character appeared in this cartoon with Goofy?

Answer: Clarabelle Cow

The cartoon, "Mickey's Revue", included the characters of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Clarabelle Cow and Horace Horsecollar. In this cartoon they performed a song and dance number, which was the theme of many of Disney's earlier cartoons.
"Mickey's Revue" was directed by Wilfred Jackson and had a release date of May 2, 1932. Mickey Mouse is actually the conductor of an orchestra, while Minnie Mouse, Clarabelle Cow and Goofy provide the music for a dance recital. Horace Horsecollar plays the role of the stage manager, while Pluto keeps sneaking up onto the stage.
6. Do you remember what Goofy's original name was?

Answer: Dippy Dawg

Originally, Goofy's character was named Dippy Dawg, by Disney's artists. He was first drawn as an old man with a white beard. He had a puffy tail and wore no trousers. He was given the name of Goofy on August 11, 1934, and was given a more youthful appearance.

Huey is one of Donald Duck's three nephews. Mortimer was the original name of Mickey Mouse, and Pluto is Mickey's pet dog.
7. Pinto Colvig provided something very distinct about Goofy. What was this characteristic?

Answer: Distinct laugh

Pinto Colvig provided the voice and laugh of Goofy until 1965. He died of lung cancer on October 3, 1967, at the age of 75. Mr. Colvig also was known for doing the voice of "Bozo the Clown", the Practical Pig in "Three Little Pigs", the voices of Sleepy and Grumpy in "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and the barks for "Pluto".

Others who took over the voice of Goofy included George Johnson, Bob Jackman, Hal Smith, Will Ryan, Tony Pope and Bill Farmer.
8. There is a series of video games in which Goofy is captain of the Royal Guard at the Disney Castle. What is the name of this series of video games?

Answer: Kingdom Hearts

"Kingdom Hearts", first released in Japan on March 28, 2002 for the Sony Play Station 2, involves Goofy, who is equipped with only a shield to do battle. King Mickey and Queen Minnie disappear so Goofy and Donald set out on a quest to rescue them. Donald is actually the court magician and Goofy is the optimist, despite his antics and problems.

They meet a character named Sora and the three of them enter Timeless River. Eventually they do find the King and Queen and restore things back to normal.
9. Goofy had a few signature expressions, which of these is not known as being connected to the character of Goofy?

Answer: They are all expressions by Goofy

"Hu-yuck!" is well known as the "Goofy" laugh. "Ahhhhh-hooo-hooo-hooo!" has been heard often as his yodel or Alpine yell. Goofy's simple-minded, yet quite bashful interjection "Gawrsh" has been heard throughout many cartoons with Goofy in it. He also has had a great signature song called, "The World Owes Me a Living" (sung or hummed in many wonderful cartoons).

In 1935, Goofy made his first appearance in "On Ice" singing "The World Owes Me a Living." Originally the Grasshopper's song, it was given to Goofy as an unofficial theme song, both vocally and instrumentally.

The song can still be heard by Goofy in the 1950s cartoon "Lion Down." Mr. Pinto Colvig did the characters of the Grasshopper and Goofy which was enough to adopt the song "The World Owes Me a Living" to Goofy's character.
10. Goofy played in "Mickey's Christmas Carol", an adaptation of Dickens's "A Christmas Carol." Which character did Goofy portray in this cartoon?

Answer: Jacob Marley

"Mickey's Christmas Carol" was a twenty-four minute long animated short film, which was released on October 20, 1983 in the United Kingdom and on December 16, 1983 in the United States. A splendid adaptation of the classic story "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens, it featured Scrooge McDuck as Ebenezer Scrooge, Mickey Mouse as Bob Cratchit and Goofy as the ghost of Jacob Marley. Scrooge's nephew Fred Honeywell was played by Donald Duck, Jiminy Cricket was the Ghost of Christmas Past, Daisy Duck played the part of Isabelle, Minnie Mouse played the part of Mrs. Cratchit, and Morty Fieldmouse played the part of Tiny Tim.

There were many characters in this film played by many well known Disney characters. To see a full list of characters and which parts they played go to the following address: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mickey's_Christmas_Carol
