Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In James Fenimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans," who declared himself to be "the last of the Mohicans"?

Answer: Chingachgook

In the novel, Chingachgook and his son, Uncas, are the last of their tribe, living on the New York frontier of the 1750s. Magua is a Huron, enemy of the British and the Mohicans. Nathaniel Bumppo, hero of five of Cooper's novels known as "The Leatherstocking Tales", is a frontiersman who has been adopted by Chingachgook. Bumppo is known as "Hawk-eye." At the end of the book, Magua kills Uncas, thus making Chingachgook the last of his people.
2. In 2011 Jane Leavy published a biography of a famous Yankee star of the 50s and 60s. The full title is "The Last Boy: (His Name) and the End of America's Childhood." Who was this baseball icon known as "the Commerce Comet"?

Answer: Mickey Mantle

"The Mick" had a fabulous career that was cut short by injury and hard living. After a brief stint in the majors in 1951, Mantle replaced the great Joe DiMaggio in center field the next season and the comet blazed from there. Blessed with great foot speed and tremendous power from both sides of the plate, Mantle retired in 1968 having amassed 7 World Series titles, 3 MVP Awards, and 20 All Star appearances.
3. Where would you have to go to see Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece, "The Last Supper"?

Answer: Milan, Italy

Da Vinci's "Last Supper" is a fresco on the end wall of a dining hall at Santa Maria della Grazie, which is a monastery. It is a fresco, meaning it was painted on wet plaster. However, since it was painted around 1495, environmental factors, among others, have affected the original painting so much so that hardly any of the original remains today, in spite of attempts to preserve and retouch it. An attempted restoration was completed in 1999.
4. "The Last Time I Saw Paris" was a song written in 1940. It won the 1941 Oscar for Best Original Song and inspired the 1954 film of the same name. Who wrote the music and lyrics for this song?

Answer: Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II

Ann Sothern sang the song in the 1940 movie "Lady Be Good," although it had been published and recorded before the film was made. Hammerstein said the song was not written for the film, per se, but it won the Academy Award nonetheless. As a result, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences changed the rules for music so that only songs written specifically for movies were eligible to win an Oscar.
5. Leading the Silver Horde in its quest to destroy the Small Gods is the title character in Sir Terry Pratchett's "The Last Hero." Who is this dominating, if ageing, figure?

Answer: Cohen the Barbarian

In "The Last Hero", Cohen is over 90 years old. He is also known as Ghenghiz Cohen. Despite his age, he insists on wearing only a loincloth, even in the snow. Rincewind is a "Wizzard" (as his tall hat proclaims), the Librarian is a orangutan, and Death is..., well, the Grim Reaper. Cohen speaks with a lisp, the Librarian's total vocabulary consists of "ook" in various numbers, and Death speaks in capital letters.
6. "The Last Emperor" was a 1997 movie about Pu Yi, the last emperor of China's Qing dynasty, which was overthrown prior to World War I. In the film Peter O'Toole plays Reginald Johnston, who was appointed tutor for Pu Yi, or Puyi, who then wishes to adopt the name of an English group of kings. Which name does he choose?

Answer: Henry

Born in Edinburgh, Johnston served as Pu Yi's tutor between 1919 and 1924, when the emperor was expelled from the Forbidden City.

Prior to World War I, P'u Yi was deposed as emperor but allowed to continue living in the Forbidden City. Following World War II, the former emperor was returned to China, where he spent ten years in a "war criminals management center" until his political views were more in line with the government's wishes. After his release he continued serving the regime's needs, although the film only portrayed him as a simple gardener.
7. Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph Beifong, and Zuko are characters that began in a Nickelodeon TV series that has branched out into video games, action figures, stuffed animals, Lego sets, and a movie directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Which popular franchise is this?

Answer: The Last Airbender

The first incarnation of "The Last Airbender" was a Nickelodeon production created in 2005 by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Its full title was "Avatar: The Last Airbender." It ran on Nickelodeon for 61 episodes in three seasons from 2005 to 2008.
8. "Last of the Dogmen" was a 1995 adventure film starring Tom Berenger and Barbara Hershey about a Native American band who lived in the rugged mountains of northwest Montana untouched by modern life. Which tribe, traditionally found on the Northern Plains, did the "Dogmen" belong to?

Answer: Cheyenne

Among the filming locations of this beautiful film were Alberta and British Columbia, including Banff National Park in the former and Yoho National Park in the latter. Dog Men, or Dog Soldiers, were one of the six Cheyenne military societies. Eventually the Dog Soldiers became a separate band.
9. What is "Me" in a 1966 hit song by Eddy Arnold?

Answer: "The Last Word in Lonesome"

After a career that began on the Grand Ole Opry stage in 1943, Eddy Arnold fell a little by the wayside with the advent of rock and roll in the Fifties. But in 1965 he began a second career with two songs that made number one on the country charts with "What's He Doing in My World" and "Make the World Go Away." Those became his first top hits in ten years.

In 1966, Rodger Miller's "The Last Word in Lonesome is Me" continued his string of number one hits.
10. The NBC television network ran a reality show from 2003 to 2010 and again from 2014 to 2015 which featured a competition in a particular field of entertainment. What was the name of this series?

Answer: Last Comic Standing

Dat Phan was the Last Comic Standing in 2003's Season 1, gaining his title in the eleventh episode, eventually beating Ralphie May. Phan's first two DVDs made their appearance in 2010. Other winners include John Heffron, Alonzo Bodden, Josh Blue, and John Reep. Iliza Shlesinger was the first female winner, coming out on top in Season 6 (2008).
