Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As you probably know, a cube is a three dimensional (solid) version of a square. How many faces does a cube have?

Answer: 6

A cube is a type of shape called a prism. Because it is based on a square, the length and width of each face are all the same.
2. A Rubik's cube has how many squares on each face?

Answer: 9

There are 9x6 squares, or 54 altogether. There are over 43 quintillion different combinations possible on a Rubik's cube, which is a number with 18 zeroes!
3. A cube is a number made from multiplying the same number together 3 times. Given this, what is the cube of 2?

Answer: 8

2x2x2=8. A cube can also be described as being "to the power of 3".
4. An ice cube is made up of the same atoms as water. Does this mean that there are 2 hydrogen atoms for every oxygen atom in an ice cube?

Answer: Yes

Ice is chemically speaking the same as water, also known as H2O. Freezing water produces a physical change by turning a liquid into a solid but doesn't change its chemical make up.
5. Which number, considered by many to be lucky, is the most commonly rolled number when two dice are used?

Answer: 7

The numbers 1-6 on two dice can produce any number from 2-12, but 7 is most common because it comes up in the most possible combinations. For example, you can roll a 1 and 6, 2 and 5, or 3 and 4. The opposite numbers on a die also add up to 7.
6. A square has four corners. The number of corners on a cube is this number times two, because of the way the edges come together. How many does it have?

Answer: 8

The corners of an object are also known as its vertices. The number of vertices can be thought of as the number of points a solid object has.
7. What is the cube of 3? In other words, what is 3 x 3 x 3, also the number of times a baseball team can get out in 9 innings?

Answer: 27

When you cube an odd number you always end up with another odd number. There are 27 bones in the human hand.
8. The number 1 is a square number, because 1 x 1 is 1. But is 1 also a cube?

Answer: Yes

The number 1 raised to any whole number is itself, because you simply are continuing to multiply by 1. So 1 x 1 x 1 is also 1.
9. Can a number be a cube as well as a square number?

Answer: Yes

For sure! 1 is an example because both 1 squared and 1 cubed give you 1. 729 is another example - it is 27 x 27 as well as 9 x 9 x 9.
10. Which of these numbers, also the number of squares on a chess or checkers board, is 4 cubed?

Answer: 64

64 is both 8 x 8 (8 squared) and 4 x 4 x 4 (4 cubed). An even number cubed is always even.
