Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Take IV away from VII and what is your answer?

Answer: III

IV equals four in Roman numerals and VII equals seven, so your answer should be III (three).

Roman numerals were used everywhere in the days of ancient Rome and for hundreds of years afterwards. They are still used on special occasions even today, but mostly we use the good old numbers 1, 2, 3 and so on, with which we are most familiar. The photo clue is of pigs, as in the fairy story, "The Three Little Pigs".
2. Take VIII away from X and what is your answer?

Answer: II

VIII equals eight in Roman numerals and X equals ten, so your answer should be II (two).

The photo clue is of two turtle doves, as in the well loved carol, "The Twelve Days of Christmas". On the second day of Christmas the singer received two turtle doves from his or her true love.
3. Add I to IV and what is your answer?

Answer: V

I equals one in Roman numerals and IV equals four, so your answer should be V (five). Other numerals above ten used in the choices are L (fifty) and XL (forty).

The photo clue is of the Olympic Games symbol of five rings hanging from London's Tower Bridge. That's where the Olympic Games were held in 1912 and 2012. The designer of this symbol, Pierre de Coubertin, said in 1931 that the rings represented "...the five inhabited continents of the world...". He left poor old Australia out though, and they're going to be in trouble if the Antarctica is ever settled by mankind, aren't they? Today however, to keep everyone happy, the Olympic symbol represent all countries of the world, so that covers it nicely.
4. Add III to IV and what is your answer?

Answer: VII

III equals three in Roman numerals and IV equals four, so your answer should be VII (seven). Other numerals above ten used in the choices are XX (twenty), CC (two hundred) and L (fifty).

The beautiful photo clue is of a rainbow. The human eye is able to perceive seven colours in a rainbow. These are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. We remember them with the memory clue of ROY G BIV, or as the great scientist Isaac Newton suggested, with the phrase "Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain". The first letter of each word in that phrase represents a colour of the rainbow.
5. Take XV away from XVI and what is your answer?

Answer: I

XV equals fifteen in Roman numerals and XVI equals sixteen, so your answer should be I (one).

The photo clue is of a solitary British red post box, also known as a pillar box. These are placed at strategic spots around areas of population for people to drop in letters to be posted if they aren't close to a larger post office itself.
6. Multiply IV by II and what is your answer?

Answer: VIII

IV equals four in Roman numerals and II equals two, so your answer should be VIII (eight). Other numerals above ten used in the choices are XI (eleven), XIV (fourteen) and XXIV (twenty-four).

The photo clue is of a spider. Spiders have eight legs. Did I say spiders? Eeek!
7. Take away V from XV and what is your answer? (Instructions given by God)

Answer: X

V equals five in Roman numerals and XV equals fifteen, so your answer should be X (ten). Other numerals above ten used in the choices are L (fifty), C (one hundred) and M (one thousand).

The photo clue is of the Ten Commandments. In the Christian and Jewish faiths, it is believed that God gave these commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai as guidelines for the people of Israel to follow, to lead a life pleasing in the eyes of the Lord. This story is usually related in the Book of Exodus in any book of the Bible.
8. Divide XXVII by III and what is your answer? (They once used these whips for punishment.)

Answer: IX

XXVII equals 27 in Roman numerals and III equals three, so your answer should be IX (nine). Other numerals above ten used in the choices are XIII (thirteen) and XVI (sixteen).

The photo clue is of a punishment device known as a cat o' nine tails. This horrible device was a whip with nine strands, with each of the strands often split into more strands, or knotted, at each end. Even one stroke from "the cat" (as it was often called) was enough to make the skin on a victim's back open up and begin bleeding. It was frequently used for punishment in the Royal Navy and in many British colonies in earlier days. Some criminals, sailors or prisoners often received punishment of 100 lashes or more from the cat. This could kill a man, so a surgeon had to be present each time to call a halt to the punishment if he thought the victim was in danger. The punishment was then completed when the back had healed, until the full amount of lashes were delivered.
9. Divide X by V - and then multiply that result by III. What is your answer?

Answer: VI

X equals ten in Roman numerals, V equals five. Dividing those two numbers gives you a result of II (two). Then, multiplying II (two) by III (three) equals six, so your answer should be VI (six).

The photo clue is of a guitar. A guitar is a very popular instrument we often see today in rock bands. Guitars can have anything from four to eighteen strings, but the average one usually comes with a standard number of six.
10. Multiply VIII by II - and then divide that result by IV. What is your answer?

Answer: IV

VIII equals eight in Roman numerals, II equals two. Multiplying those two numbers gives you a result of XVI (sixteen). Dividing XVI (sixteen) by IV (four) gives you an answer of IV (four). Other numerals above ten used in the choices are XI (eleven), XXXIV (thirty-four) and XIV (fourteen).

The photo clue is of four aces with the four different suits in a deck of playing cards represented - the ace of spades, hearts, clubs and diamonds. We have now "dealt" thoroughly with the first ten symbols of the Roman numeral system. These are I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX and X - representing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Which do you think is easiest?
