Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When you empty your pockets, you realize you just happen to have one of each of the main coins used in the U.S. How much money do you have?

Answer: $0.41

The most commonly used coins in the U.S. are the penny (one cent), the nickel (five cents), the dime (ten cents), and the quarter (twenty-five cents). Some other U.S. coins include dollar coins, such as the Sacagawea coin, and half dollars, which are fifty cents.

.25 + .10 + .05 + .01 = .41
2. If you had ten pennies, you could switch them out for one of what other U.S. coin?

Answer: dime

.01 x 10 = .10
Since each penny is worth one cent, ten pennies would be ten cents. Dimes are worth ten cents, so ten pennies would be the same as one dime.

U.S. pennies show a portrait of President Abraham Lincoln on the front. The back has had many different designs. From 1959 to 2008, the back showed the Lincoln Memorial.
3. How many U.S. nickels would you need to have the equivalent of one quarter?

Answer: 5

.05 x 5 = .25
Quarters are worth twenty-five cents, so you would need five nickels to have the same amount as one quarter.

The front of U.S. nickels show President Thomas Jefferson. The back shows Jefferson's home, Monticello.
4. How many U.S. dimes would you need to have a dollar?

Answer: 10

.10 x 10 = 1.00
Since dimes are worth ten cents, you need ten to have a dollar, which is equivalent to one hundred cents.

U.S. dimes have President Franklin D. Roosevelt depicted on the front. On the back is an olive branch, a torch, and an oak branch.
5. If you found a toy at a garage sale that cost $0.50 and you paid with a one dollar bill, how much change would you get back?

Answer: $0.50

1.00 - .50 = .50
You get change back when you pay more than is needed.

U.S. quarters have George Washington on the front. The backs have had many different designs. Each state has a quarter dedicated to it with pictures on the back that represent that state.
6. If you had four quarters, three dimes, two nickels, and one penny, how much money would you have?

Answer: $1.41

.25 x 4 = 1.00
.10 x 3 = .30
.05 x 2 = .10
.01 x 1 = .01

1.00 + .30 + .10 + .01 = 1.41

The first U.S. coins were minted in 1792.
7. If you had one quarter, two dimes, three nickels, and four pennies, how much money would you have?

Answer: $0.64

.25 x 1 = .25
.10 x 2 = .20
.05 x 3 = .15
.01 x 4 = .04

.25 + .20 + .15 + .04 = .64

Dimes are the smallest U.S. coins. Quarters are the largest of the main four, but half dollars are even bigger.
8. You had $0.43 before you found two quarters in the couch. How much money do you have now?

Answer: $0.93

Quarters got their name from the fact that they are one quarter, or 1/4, of a dollar. Two quarters would be fifty cents, or half of a dollar.

.25 x 2 = .50
.43 + .50 = .93
9. If you had a dollar in change but then lost three nickels, how much money would you have left?

Answer: $0.85

.05 x 3 = .15
1.00 - .15 = .85

Before the current U.S. nickel was created in 1938, there was a Buffalo nickel. It had a Native American on the front and an American bison, or buffalo, on the back.
10. If you had three quarters, three dimes, three nickels, and three pennies, how much money would you have?

Answer: $1.23

.25 x 3 = .75
.10 x 3 = .30
.05 x 3 = .15
.01 x 3 = .03

.75 + .30 + .15 + .03 = 1.23

If you had one hundred of each of the main four coins, you would have $41.
