Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Name the free reed musical instrument that has a bellows and buttons on each end.

Answer: Concertina

It is believed that the concertina was developed independently in England and Germany at about the same time in the early nineteenth century. Manufactured in many different shapes and styles, it is used in both classical and traditional music.
2. In the Middle Ages, musicians used the tabor drum while performing. What do we call the descendent of the tabor drum today?

Answer: Snare Drum

Medieval musicians played the tabor drum to accompany the flute. It has since evolved into a variety of snare drums including the piccolo snare, the kit snare, and marching snare, with each producing a different sound.
3. What would musicians who play folk music likely call a violin?

Answer: Fiddle

There is typically no structural difference between a violin and a fiddle. In reality, even those who play violins, use the term "fiddling" when they play, and the term can be applied to a wide variety of music.
4. In which of the classifications below would instruments such as a piano, organ, and carillon be placed?

Answer: Keyboard

Many instruments use a keyboard, and the term is used quite a bit today when describing modern synthesizers. Historically, the term was used as a generic term for any similar instrument. For example, in the eighteenth century, it was typical to call a piano, harpsichord, or clavichord a keyboard; in many cases, the same composition could be played with any of the instruments.
5. Used by herders to keep track of many different types of animals, what is the name of this instrument that might be found in a one-man band?

Answer: Cowbell

When herds were free-roaming, it was typical for each owner to have a different sounding bell in order to identify the person to whom the different animals belonged. Some cowbells that are used as musical instruments are clapperless, and are struck with a stick to produce a tone.
6. Which instrument is both the largest and lowest-pitched in the brass family?

Answer: Tuba

Latin for "trumpet", the tuba is used in marching bands, jazz bands, and drum and bugle corps, where the tuba players are known as "bass players". In a typical orchestra there is usually only one tuba player, who is called a "tubaist" or "tubist".
7. Which instrument in a one-man band is traditionally associated with calling people to dinner?

Answer: Triangle

First made in the sixteenth century, the triangle became a popular orchestral instrument in the 1700s. Well-known composers, such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Haydn used it in their compositions. Although the triangle looks like it would be an easy instrument to learn, one of the most difficult aspects of playing is controlling the volume.
8. Which instrument, whose ancestors date back to ancient Egypt and Greece, was a signature instrument of jazz artists such as Benny Goodman?

Answer: Clarinet

The immediate ancestor to the modern clarinet was called a chalumeau, which was the first true reed instrument. Invented by Johann Christoph Denner in the late 1600s, the clarinet has undergone many modifications that mostly involved the keywork; today most have seventeen or eighteen keys.
9. Name the very versatile instrument, the largest and lowest pitched bowed string instrument, that can also be played by plucking the strings.

Answer: Bass

"Pizzicato" means plucking an instrument instead of using the bow. "Arco" means to return to using the bow after plucking. Also called a double bass or contrabass, the instrument was developed in Europe during the fifteenth century.
10. In ancient times, this instrument, with the highest register in the brass family, was used as a signaling device. Name the instrument!

Answer: Trumpet

Although ancient trumpets did not have valves, modern ones usually have three. The sound is made by blowing air through a mouthpiece and selecting the correct valve combination for tones.
