Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was Dorothy visiting in the beginning of the story?

Answer: San Francisco

Dorothy and her Uncle Henry had been visiting San Francisco for a week. He stayed at Hugson's Ranch while Dorothy visited with some friends. She hitched a train to Hugson's Siding and met her second cousin, Zeb. San Francisco had been experiencing many earthquakes during Dorothy's stay.
2. Which of the following was not true of the people of the Land of the Mangaboos?

Answer: They could fly

No, the people of the Land of the Mangaboos could not fly. However, in their world one could walk through the air as if on invisible steps. Dorothy noticed that everyone was also glasslike and beautiful, although their faces showed no emotion. Also, they were technically all vegetables and could only live a few years after they were picked from their patches.
3. How did the Wizard prove he was worthy enough to succeed the cruel Sorcerer?

Answer: He made piglets magically appear and disappear

The cruel Sorcerer, Gwig, was actually not much of a Sorcerer. The current Prince of the Mangaboos was frustrated with him always predicting the wrong things for his people. The Wizard arrived from his and Dorothy's world in his air balloon and was challenged to prove himself as a Wizard. So he used his own hat and produced nine tiny little piglets.

He used "magic" and made them appear and disappear at his whim. The Prince was impressed and claimed he was better than Gwig.
4. In the Valley of Voe, everyone was invisible. What did they eat to make them so?

Answer: Dama-fruit

Dorothy, the Wizard, Zeb, Jim, Eureka, and the piglets escaped from the Black Pit of the Mangaboos and found the beautiful Valley of Voe. They heard many kind people living there, they just couldn't see them. A mother explained to them that they ate a fruit called dama-fruit, which rendered them invisible. The piglets ate one and became invisible, so the Wizard commanded that nobody else eat the fruit.
5. The Valley of Voe was beautiful with many kind people. But what lived there that made it a frightening place?

Answer: Vicious bears

The mother in the Valley of Voe warned Dorothy and the others that her warm country also housed many cruel bears. She explained that the bears also ate the dama-fruit and were therefore invisible. The mother said you had a chance to survive if you were invisible, too. Dorothy was able to escape the vicious bears with the help of a girl, who told them it was safe to go in a river.

The group rubbed the dirt from a plant on their feet and were able to walk on water to escape the bears!
6. The Braided Man of Pyramid Mountain was missing one color for his braids - which color?

Answer: Blue

While journeying up the massive Pyramid Mountain, the group met a braided man. He was kind, yet perhaps wasn't entirely sane. The man explained he used to make holes for all kinds of things, like doughnuts, and one day leaned too far in while looking at all of his holes.

He fell into the earth and spent his time making flutters and rustles. The braided man traded one of each to the Wizard and Dorothy in exchange for a blue ribbon from Dorothy. He had yellow, brown, pink, green, red, white, and black and was overjoyed to receive blue from Dorothy.
7. What were the wood gargoyles afraid of?

Answer: Loud sounds

In the Valley of Voe, the friends learned about a Champion who ventured into the Country of the Gargoyles. He told his people he spent a very long time escaping because the gargoyles were terrible beasts. They were afraid of loud sounds, so the Champion would yell to keep them at bay, but he would need to catch his breath in order to fight and was nearly overwhelmed.

The Wizard and Dorothy used that knowledge to attempt to evade the gargoyles.
8. Jim won his race against the Sawhorse.

Answer: False

Ozma declared a holiday in the Emerald City when Dorothy returned to Oz. Many games were played, and a race was had. Jim faced off against the Sawhorse, who explained he would not get tired and didn't have to draw any breath, either. The Sawhorse easily beat the older horse and won the race.
9. What was little Eureka accused of doing?

Answer: Eating a piglet

The Wizard offered Ozma one of his darling little piglets. She gave it a lovely green collar and kept it in her room. One morning it was missing and the little cat Eureka was accused on eating it. All throughout their adventures, Eureka had longed to eat one or two of them. She was given a trial to prove her innocence.
10. Who represented Eureka in her trial?

Answer: The Tin Woodman

It was deemed that the Tin Woodman would be Eureka's lawyer, seeing as his heart was true and kind. Despite it being one of his pigs possibly murdered, the Wizard gave Nick Chopper another pig and told him to say that it was the missing pig. However, Eureka herself disproved that when the pig was shown. Ozma saw through the lie because it wasn't wearing the green collar.

It turned out that Eureka had tried to eat the pig but failed. The piggy was stuck in a vase in Ozma's room the whole time.
