GEORGE'S Marvellous Medicine Trivia Quiz

This book for children was written by Roald Dahl and illustrated by Quentin Blake. The main character's name is written as 'GEORGE' in the book's title but as 'George' in the text so I have done the same here.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was George's Grandma like?

Answer: A complaining old person who bullied George

George's Grandma was his mother's mother, who lived with him and his parents on a farm. She was selfish and impossible to please, and expected to be waited on. She was especially nasty to George when his parents weren't around to hear her.
2. Why did George decide to make his medicine?

Answer: As a kill or cure measure

His Grandma had medicine four times a day, but George believed it did not seem to help her as she was still horrid. George was really fed up and decided to make her a specially strong medicine that would either cure her or blow her head off.
3. What was the first thing that George put into the medicine?

Answer: Shampoo

To make the medicine, George went around the house putting lots of different liquids, contents of aerosol cans and pastes and powders into an enormous saucepan. He first went to the bathroom and tipped the whole of a bottle of 'Golden Gloss Hair Shampoo' into this saucepan.
4. Which perfume did George add to the medicine?

Answer: Flowers of Turnips

In his parents' bedroom George found many things to put in the saucepan to make the medicine. As well as the perfume, he added face powder and hair spray as well as lipsticks. Then he collected more things from the laundry-room and kitchen before gathering even more ingredients from the shed and garage.
5. How did George make the medicine in the saucepan change colour to brown?

Answer: Added brown paint

When he stirred all the ingredients together and then boiled the mixture, it bubbled and foamed and gave off blue smoke. When it started cooling down, it was bright blue, so George added the brown paint. This turned the medicine the same colour as his Grandma's real medicine.
6. What was the final and permanent effect of George's medicine on his Grandma?

Answer: She shrank until she disappeared

When George gave his Grandma the new medicine, she first went through some temporary changes, such as getting very hot and then swelling up for a time. Eventually, though, she started shrinking, until she completely disappeared.
7. Which non-human did George first give his medicine to?

Answer: A chicken

His Grandma was pleased with the effect of George's medicine, but did not believe that his medicine had caused the effect. To prove that it was, he gave some to a normal chicken, which also went through some temporary changes before growing bigger and plumper until it was the size of a horse.
8. Who suggested giving some of the medicine to other animals?

Answer: George's father

George's father was surprised to see the hen and the football-sized egg it laid. He had been trying to breed bigger animals for food for a long time, and now he and George gave all the other animals some of the medicine and they all grew very large too.
9. How did the second batch of medicine affect a chicken?

Answer: Its legs grew very long

George and his father tried to make some more medicine to sell to other farmers, but George could not remember everything that he put into the first batch. The second medicine made the chicken jump into the air and then its body stayed the same size, but its legs grew very long.
10. Why did George's Grandma take some of the fourth version of the medicine?

Answer: She thought it was tea

George and his father tried adding more ingredients to the medicine and then some more again. The fourth version made a chicken grow very small. Grandma didn't see this and thought the medicine was tea, which she insisted on gulping down. Steam came from her ears, then she very quickly shrank down and down until she disappeared altogether.
