Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was NOT one of the unexpected defense mechanisms that Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Griphook encountered in their attempt to rob Gringotts?

Answer: Anti-summoning Enchantments

Although the group encountered all of these security measures, judging from Griphook's reactions they had only expected and prepared for the anti-summoning enchantments on the treasure. The Thieves' Downfall, which disrupts magical concealment; the Geminio Curse, which made worthless duplicates of the treasure when touched; and the Flagrante Curse, which makes the treasure hot. All had to be explained by Griphook while in the vault, indicating that he had not told the others about them during their planning sessions.
2. What was Snape aiming at when he cut off George's ear?

Answer: Another Death Eater's wand hand

Snape reveals this in the memories that he gives Harry at the end of the book. This is more proof that he was working for Dumbledore and the Order all along.
3. How much older than James was Lily? (Referring to Harry's parents, not children).

Answer: 2 months

According to their gravestone, James was born on 27 March 1960 and Lily was born on 30 January 1960, making Lily about 2 months older. They were both 21 when they died on Halloween of 1981, which means that the seventh book takes place in 1997 and 1998.
4. Food is one of the five exceptions to what magical law?

Answer: Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration

Hermione mentions this in the woods when Ron complains that his mother conjures her meals out of thin air. Ron pulls the fact out again at Hogwarts to impress the other students and Hermione.
5. What are the names of the Cattermoles' three children?

Answer: Maisie, Ellie, and Alfred

Ron disguised himself as Mr. Cattermole to get into the Ministry of Magic the very day that Mrs. Cattermole was put on trial for being a Muggle-born. It was during Mrs. Cattermole's trial that Harry stunned Umbridge and escaped with the locket and the detained Muggle-borns.
6. Whose Potterwatch code name was "Rodent"?

Answer: Fred

Fred changed the name to "Rapier" within seconds. The code names used on the show were fairly transparent: Lee-River referred to the River Jordan, Remus-Romulus was all due to the legendary twins Romulus and Remus, as well as Lupin's werewolf status, and Kingsley-Royal is painfully obvious.
7. According to Potterwatch, what did Hagrid do that forced him to go into hiding?

Answer: He held a 'Support Harry Potter' party

Hagrid succeed in escaping into the hills with his giant half-brother, Grawp, and returns to fight in the Battle of Hogwarts. On Potterwatch, Lupin advised that following Hagrid's lead was unwise in the present climate
8. What was so special about the peacocks at the Malfoy Manor?

Answer: They were all white

The albino peacocks, probably produced by generations of inbreeding, could reflect the Malfoys' obsession with pure blood.
9. What was Bellatrix Lestrange's wand made of?

Answer: Walnut and dragon heartstring

Lucius' wand was elm and dragon heartstring, Draco's wand (that Harry took) was hawthorn and unicorn hair, and Pettigrew's wand was chestnut and dragon heartstring. The fact that Hermione used Bellatrix's original wand as part of her Gringotts disguise proved to be one of the things that gave her away> This was because it was common knowledge among the Death Eaters that the wand was stolen when Harry, Ron, and Hermione escaped Malfoy Manor.
10. Who does Harry say was "probably the bravest man I knew"?

Answer: Snape

Harry confides this to his eleven-year-old son Albus, who is worried about being sorted into Slytherin.
