Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What's Lupin's first name?

Answer: Remus

Lupin is named for a Roman legend. Remus and Romulus, twins, were left to die in a wood as babies. However, they were suckled by a she-wolf and soon discovered by a kindly shepherd who adopted them. Romulus went on to create the city of Rome, but Remus taunted him about a puny wall he was building, and Romulus killed him. Not very nice...
2. How old was Lupin when he became a werewolf?

Answer: Very young

Lupin tells this to Ron, Harry, and Hermione when they are all in the Shrieking Shack near the end of Book 3. The potion that makes him tame was not invented when he was a boy, so his transformations then were extremely painful.
3. What is the name of the potion that keeps Lupin safe as a werewolf, allowing him to remain in the school when it is time to transform?

Answer: Wolfsbane Potion

Professor Snape is in charge of making this potion for Lupin. Before he knows Lupin is a werewolf, Harry is worried Snape might be trying to poison Lupin, in order to get his job. Technically, this potion could be called the Aconite Potion, as wolfsbane, aconite, and monkshood are all the same thing.
4. Which of these is *not* a definition of a werewolf that Lupin uses in Book 5?

Answer: He looks just like me...

Lupin says these things, which Harry overhears in the Pensieve, after taking his OWLs when he was fifteen. Sirius asked him if he thought he got Question 10 right, which was : Give five signs that identify the werewolf. However, Lupin does shush his friends nervously when they start talking about sneaking out of Hogwarts with him.
5. Who makes it incredibly difficult for Lupin to get a job after he quits Hogwarts?

Answer: Umbridge

Umbridge hates all half-breeds (centaurs, merpeople, half-giants, werewolves, etc.) and passes several laws that makes it almost impossible for people like Lupin to find work. Harry notices that Lupin is looking a little shabbier when he sees him at #12 Grimmaud Place.
6. Dumbledore made Lupin a prefect so he could keep James and Sirius under control.

Answer: True

At least, that's what Lupin believes. However, when James and Sirius are taunting Snape for no good reason, though Lupin does not help them, he doesn't stop them either. He himself points this out when Harry asks him and Sirius about Snape's worst memory.
7. What does Lavender Brown THINK the Boggart turns into when it sees Lupin?

Answer: crystal ball

Lavender wonders about this after the Gryffindor Third Years' first DADA lesson. In actuality, Lupin is most afraid of the full moon, which turns him into a werewolf. Hermione, unlike Lavender, realizes what the boggart is, and this is one of the ways she figures out what Lupin is.
8. Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs are Animagi.

Answer: False

Moony, or Lupin, is a werewolf, which is not the same as an animagi. Wormtail, or Peter Pettigrew, can turn into a rat; Padfoot (Sirius Black) could become a dog; and Prongs, Harry's father, could turn into a stag, which is also the shape Harry's Patronus takes (coincidently, it was Lupin who taught Harry how to conjure a Patronus).
9. __________ is pleased that Lupin knows his remedies, unlike a certain previous DADA teacher. Fill in the blank.

Answer: Madam Pomfrey

Madam Pomfrey, as we all know, is the school nurse. She was furious when Gilderoy Lockhart, the DADA teacher before Lupin, accidentally de-boned Harry's arm instead of healing it. Lupin, however, is well aware that chocolate is the best remedy for Dementor after-shock.
10. Which of the following was an excuse Lupin used for his monthly disappearances when he was a boy?

Answer: His mother was ill

Lupin was terrified his friends would desert him if they found out he was a werewolf. Instead, they became illegal animagi (werewolves are only a threat to humans, so Peter, Sirius, and James would keep Lupin company as animals). Soon, they left the Shrieking Shack and started exploring Hogsmeade and the Hogwarts grounds. That's how they came to write the Marauders' Map.
11. "You fool. Is a schoolboy grudge worth putting an innocent man back into Azkaban?" To whom does Lupin say this?

Answer: Snape

Lupin says this when Snape is trying to take Sirius to the Dementors. A moment later, cords shoot from Snape's wand and tie Lupin up. Snape is going to take both of them to the Dementors to get Kissed, but Harry, Ron, and Hermione blast Snape with the Disarming Charm, and he is knocked unconscious.
12. What does Peeves call Lupin in his annoying song about him?

Answer: Loony, loopy Lupin

Peeves has a lot of annoying songs. For example, when everyone thinks Harry is the Heir of Slytherin in Book 2, Peeves sings,
"Oh, Potter, you rotter,
Oh what have you done?
You're killing off students,
You think it's good fun!"
13. It is Hagrid who tells everyone Lupin is a werewolf, and thus forces him to leave.

Answer: False

It is Snape. He tells all the Slytherins at breakfast what Lupin is, because Lupin managed to convince the Minister of Magic he was trying to save Ron, Hermione, and Harry's lives instead of helping Sirius Black get into the castle. Snape was also sort of cracked by losing his Order of Merlin, because Sirius escaped.
14. Lupin is Hagrid's age, and his hair is greying. True or false?

Answer: False

It's true Lupin's hair is greying, but this is probably just because he's a werewolf. He's only as old as Sirius, Snape, and James, which is, I'm guessing, mid-thirties. Hagrid is in his sixties at the time of the third Book. Lupin's face is also prematurely lined and his voice is hoarse. It's tough being a werewolf.
15. Lupin is reading a book after the OWLs in the Pensieve. What's it about?

Answer: Transfiguration

When Sirius says he's bored and wishes it were the full moon, Lupin replies, "You might. We've still got Transfiguration, if you're bored, you could test me...Here." and hands him his book. Instead, Sirius and James start to provoke Snape.
