In the first book, Jack and Annie meet up with many different kinds of dinosaurs including a T-Rex and a Pteranodon, which they befriend.

All "Magic Tree House" books are filled with interesting facts. To learn more about some of the subjects, the author has written "Research Guides" about many of the topics covered in the stories. She works with her husband Will and her sister Natalie on the research guides.

The Magic Tree House is on the tallest tree in Frog Creek forest which is an oak. The author got the idea of using a tree house while taking a walk with her husband in a local woods. They noticed an old abandoned tree house and she started to think about the stories.

The stories take place in Frog Creek, Pennsylvania. Although Frog Creek is not a real town, Pennsylvania has a few "creek" towns including Falls Creek located about 50 miles from Kettle Creek State Park.
