Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which is the first book in the series of twelve?

Answer: Swallows and Amazons

Roger is the first ever character mentioned by Arthur Ransome. He is pretending to be a sailing ship as he carries his father's telegram from his mother back to the others. In two books neither the Swallows nor the Amazons appear. These are "Coot Club" and "The Big Six" where Dick and Dorothea are the main characters.
2. Which is the last book in the series of twelve?

Answer: Great Northern?

An unfinished book which Hugh Brogan entitled "Coots in the North" suggests that Ransome wanted to write another book in which the Amazons met the Death and Glories. Notice the question mark on the end of the title "Great Northern?" That's because the children weren't really sure what sort of bird Dick had spotted.
3. Which characters make their first appearance in "Winter Holiday"?

Answer: Dick and Dorothea

We meet Dick and Dorothea at the beginning of "Winter Holiday" and see the ways in which they gradually make friends with John, Susan, Titty, Roger, Nancy and Peggy.
4. Which of the girls is the one who finds water by dowsing or water divining with a hazel twig in "Pigeon Post"?

Answer: Titty

It has to be Titty. She is the character that has the most imagination and the most sensitive nature. That is why the experience proves to be so frightening for her. It all seems worthwhile when she sees the little hedgehog drinking from the small well that they make.
5. To which country do John, Susan, Titty and Roger sail in "We Didn't Mean To Go To Sea"?

Answer: Holland or the Netherlands

They end up in the port of Flushing in Holland. Of course they had no intention of making such a perilous journey but they cope well with all the dangers that occur when they are left without an adult in a drifting yacht.
6. In which story does the Swallow become shipwrecked on Pike Rock?

Answer: Swallowdale

The inspiration for the story was the idea of John being "too perfect" in the first book "Swallows and Amazons". In the second book, "Swallowdale", we can like him for making a mistake and being just like us.
7. In which book do the Swallows and Amazons sail across the Atlantic to a small island?

Answer: Peter Duck

Like "Missee Lee" the book "Peter Duck" seems more like a "storybook adventure" with pirates and treasure. In the other ten stories the reality of the children's holiday adventures is always close to the reader. "Peter Duck" is like one of the wild stories that the children make up themselves.
8. If Nancy and Peggy are the Amazons and John, Susan, Titty and Roger are the Swallows, in "Secret Water" who are Don,Dum,Dee and Daisy?

Answer: The Eels

The Swallows and Amazons first make friends with Don (whom they call the Mastodon) and he invites them to join the tribe of Eels that have their holidays on the tidal shallows called "Secret Water". The "D's" are, of course, Dick and Dorothea who do not appear in "Secret Water".
9. In "Coot Club" what is the Margoletta?

Answer: The motor cruiser hired by the noisy people who disturb the birds.

It's Tom Dudgeon who casts the Margoletta adrift and thus makes himself a hunted outlaw on the Norfolk Broads. In the end the Margoletta has to be rescued by the crew of the Death and Glory.
10. In "Missee Lee" who or what is the main cause of the sinking of the Wild Cat?

Answer: Gibber the monkey

It is all caused by Gibber the monkey getting hold of Captain Flint's cigar - another good example of the dangers of smoking!
11. What is the main crime that has to be investigated by the big six detectives in "The Big Six"?

Answer: The problem of who is setting boats adrift on the Norfolk Broads.

It is the Death and Glories (Joe, Bill and Pete) who come under suspicion. There is also the other crime of stealing metal shackles from the boatyard. It takes the combined skills of Dick, Dorothea and Tom Dudgeon to help the three lads prove their innocence.
12. In "The Picts and the Martyrs" from whom are Dick and Dorothea being hidden?

Answer: The Great Aunt whose name is Miss Turner

MissTurner doesn't approve of the Swallows because she thinks they made Nancy and Peggy late for meals and generally unruly. Nancy knows that she wouldn't like the D's either and so decides to hide them until the old lady has gone away. Nancy is trying hard to spare her mother from nasty criticism about the way they are being brought up.
13. Captain Flint sends a message from South America telling Nancy and Peggy to give Timothy the run of his study (in "Pigeon Post"). Who or what do they think Timothy is?

Answer: an armadillo

Timothy turns out to be Captain Flint's friend and partner in the prospecting business. Unfortunately Timothy is a very shy man who is awkward in the company of both children and adults. This leads to him behaving suspiciously and becoming the enemy of the Swallows, Amazons and D's as they search for gold on High Topps.
14. In which book does Nancy have the mumps and the rest have to be put into quarantine ?

Answer: Winter Holiday

Although she ends up with a pumpkin shaped face, Nancy decides it is the best thing that could have happened for it means the others can have an extended holiday and enjoy the unique experience of the lake being totally frozen over.
15. In which book do the Swallows and Amazons climb the mountain they call Kanchenjunga and also Titty finds Peter Duck's cave?

Answer: Swallowdale

Nancy and Peggy discover that their mother and father (now dead) and their Uncle Jim had climbed the same mountain when they were children - except they had called it the Matterhorn. Arthur Ransome based this mountain on the famous Old Man of Coniston.
