The Amazing Maurice's Amazing Quiz

I think that "The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents" by Terry Pratchett is a truly great book as it has philosophy in it as if by accident.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where does the story (or part of it) start?

Answer: in a mail coach

In the very first paragraph of this book, it states "It began - PART of it began - on the mail coach that came over the mountains from the distant cities of the plain." It turns out that this carriage is stolen, and the occupants arrive eventually in the town of Bad Blintz.
2. How does Maurice attempt to deceive the rats at the start of the book?

Answer: he tells them that gold is silver and silver is gold

Although Maurice only carries out one of these tricks, he is very dishonest and would probably try any of the other tricks if he had the opportunity.
3. What is the most noticable thing about Maurice?

Answer: he is a talking cat

Maurice is, of course, a talking cat, although at some points in the book he acts as though he is both a god, and has been alive for ages.
4. Which of these is NOT a name from the book?

Answer: noaddedsalt

The rats in this book are very intelligent; they learned to read before knowing what it was they were reading.
5. What is the sign that Peaches uses to mean "no"?

Answer: a thick, horizontal line

Peaches is in fact a rat, and she is like a secretary to Dangerous Beans. She does not write in English because other rats would not be able to understand. She uses a trap (a mouse/rat trap) as a sign for death, but the cross is not used at all.
6. What, according to Mr Bunnsy, is the important thing about adventures?

Answer: they shouldn't be so long as to make you miss mealtimes

This question came from the extract from "Mr Bunnsy has an adventure" at the start of the chapter. I think that these extracts really show a deeper side to the book, about beliefs and such.
7. What is Malicia Grim obsessed with?

Answer: reading and making up stories

Malicia claims to be related to "The Sisters Grim", and is always seeing stories where there are none. For example, she once tracked the mysterious headless horseman, who later turned out to be a tax collector.
8. How many rats make up a rat king?

Answer: It depends

Rat kings are a group of rats who have their tails tied together and have supernatural powers. They can control other rats' (and sometimes other humans') minds.
9. What Victorian tradition did Darktan and Hamnpork sabotage?

Answer: The rat pit (people bet on how many rats a dog can kill in a set amount of time)

They did sort of help getting rid of rat catchers but it was very indirectly and others played a much greater part.
10. What happens to Maurice at the end of the book?

Answer: all of these answers

Maurice dies but cats have nine lives so he comes back to life. He then tells the humans to accept rats as normal citizens, but leaves town to go on another adventure. I hope you enjoyed my quiz!
