Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who first tells Harry about the Deathly Hallows?

Answer: Xenophilius Lovegood

Hermione is left an old storybook from Dumbledore when he dies. In the book, she sees the mark of the Deathly Hallows, which, according to Viktor Krum, was also the Dark wizard Grindelwald's mark. (They don't know that the symbol is that of the Deathly Hallows at this point, however.) She remembers that Xenophilius Lovegood wore it on his chest at Bill and Fleur's wedding, so they go to ask him about it.
2. Which one was NOT one of the Deathly Hallows?

Answer: The Philosopher's Stone

The Elder Wand is the first of the Hallows and is supposed to be an unbeatable wand. The Resurrection Stone is the second, and can bring back ghosts, or shades, of people who have died. The final Hallow is the Invisibility Cloak, which makes the wearer completely - well, invisible.

In the Harry Potter series, the Philosopher's (or Sorcerer's) Stone can turn any metal into gold and create a potion to make the drinker immortal, but it is not one of the Deathly Hallows.
3. Which Hallow did Dumbledore expect Voldemort to go after?

Answer: Elder Wand

Dumbledore expected Voldemort to try to find the Elder Wand, because legend called it "the unbeatable wand". He tells Harry this during their chat in the "spiritual world". Dumbledore also says that Voldemort would likely have no use for the Resurrection Stone, because he would not want to raise anyone from the dead, as he cannot love. Also, Voldemort could perform Disillusionment Charms, so he wouldn't need the Cloak of Invisibility.
4. In the legend of the Deathly Hallows, how is the third brother described?

Answer: a humble man

The third brother is described as humble, and he does not trust Death. The first brother is the one who is described as a combative man, thus his reason for asking for an unbeatable wand, and the second brother is shown as an arrogant man, thus his asking for a stone that could take people from Death.
5. What is the name on the grave in Godric's Hollow on which is engraved the symbol of the Deathly Hallows?

Answer: Peverell

The name on the grave was Peverell. Hermione mistakes it for Harry's parents' grave, but recalls seeing the symbol in "The Tales of Beedle the Bard." Grindelwald is not buried in Godric's Hollow.
6. What other names is the Elder Wand known as?

Answer: The Wand of Destiny and the Deathstick

When Harry, Ron, and Hermione visit Xenophilius Lovegood's home, he tells them about the history of the Elder Wand. According to him, the Elder Wand has cropped up in the history books under different names, including the Wand of Destiny, the Deathstick, and the Elder Wand.
7. What is the name of the brother who requests an object "that will enable him to go forth from that place without being followed by Death?"

Answer: Ignotus Peverell

Ignotus Peverell is the third and youngest brother. He is described as humble and distrustful of Death, so he asks Death for this. Death gives him the Invisibility Cloak.
8. Who was the master of the Elder Wand before Harry?

Answer: Draco Malfoy

Dumbledore was the master of the Elder Wand at one point. However, Draco Malfoy won the Elder Wand's allegiance when he disarmed Dumbledore. Since Dumbledore was unarmed when Snape killed him, the wand's allegiance did not change to Snape upon Dumbledore's death. Harry caused the Elder Wand to change its allegiance again by disarming Draco Malfoy at Malfoy Manor.

Although Draco was not using the Elder Wand at the time (in fact, he never even knew he owned it), he was the master of the wand Harry captured from him. Thus, after this, the Elder Wand rightfully belonged to Harry, although Voldemort physically possessed it at the time.
9. What is the description of the Elder Wand?

Answer: 15 inches long, thestral tail hair, elder wood

According to J.K. Rowling, a wand with a thestral tail hair core can only be truly mastered by a witch/wizard who can face death. This makes sense, as the wand was supposedly made by Death himself.

Lucius Malfoy owned an 18-inch-long, dragon heartstring core, elm wand. Voldemort borrowed - well, technically stole - the wand from Lucius, believing that the new wand could kill Harry Potter, as it was not a brother to Harry's wand.

Harry Potter owned the 11-inch-long, phoenix feather core, holly wood wand. This was his first wand, purchased from Ollivander's shop in Harry's first year. It shared a core with Lord Voldemort's, making Harry and Voldemort's wands brothers. This connection was significant in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," as it saved Harry's life during the Third Task when he dueled Voldemort.

Lord Voldemort owned the 13-inch-long, phoenix feather core, yew wood wand. He too bought the wand from Ollivander's shop in Diagon Alley, in his first year at Hogwarts. As mentioned above, his wand shared a core with Harry's. He was dissatisfied with this wand when he learned of the twin cores; thus his reason for taking Lucius' wand and later the Elder Wand.
10. In the forest, Voldemort uses this curse to toss what he thinks is Harry's body around in the air.

Answer: The Cruciatus Curse

The Levitation Jinx does not exist. The Stunning Spell (Stupefy) knocks the victim out. Voldemort uses the Cruciatus Curse to toss Harry in the air. When Voldemort speaks the incantation aloud, Harry braces himself for pain, but the curse only sends him into the air; it does not cause the torture it is supposed to. This is because Harry is the master of the Elder Wand, and the wand will not harm its true owner.
