Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The name of this character tells us his alliance and offers us a view to his personality. His first name means white (as in good and pure) or wisdom. His last name refers to his reputation of being rather eccentric. Who is this older friend and adviser of Harry?

Answer: Albus Dumbledore

Albus is Latin for 'white'; this could refer to the fact that he is on the side of good, though others think it simply refers to his beard. Dumbledore is Old English for 'bumblebee'. JKR stated that she named him thus because she envisioned him wandering around humming to himself while lost in thought. Rather eccentric in my opinion : )
2. This character's ability to transform into an animal at will was hinted at in his name, which gives not only the animal he transforms into but also the coloring. Who is this brilliant figure?

Answer: Sirius Black

Sirius is in fact named after the star Sirius, also know as the 'Dog Star'. Considering this his name can be translated 'Dog Black' or 'Black Dog', which is in fact the animal that he transforms into.
3. In the name of this character we get a double hint of what he really is. Both first and last name are of Latin origin and both point to the creature he becomes at certain times. Who is this moony personage?

Answer: Remus Lupin

Remus Lupin is of course a werewolf. Remus was one of the twin brothers, credited by legend as the founders of Rome, both he and his brother were raised by a she-wolf. Lupin is Latin for 'wolf-like'. But then you figured it out before Hermione did, didn't you?
4. This character was named specifically because he was kicked out but allowed to stay and perform certain tasks. Who is this 'servant'?

Answer: Rubeus Hagrid

The Greek God Hagrid was cast out of Mount Olympus but allowed to stay on to care for the wildlife of the godly home. Sound familiar?
5. This character's name fits all too well telling us that she is both strict and devoted to learning. Who is this schoolmarm?

Answer: Minerva McGonagall

Minerva was the Roman goddess of wisdom and learning, well known for her strict punishments.
6. This character gets his name from his cruel, strict manner. Who is this hook-nosed villain-like personage?

Answer: Severus Snape

Severus could be derived from two English words the first Sever means 'to cut off', however the second and in my opinion the more likely Severe means 'cruel, strict'. Sounds like a good description of Snape to me.
7. This character was named for certain snake-like and cruel qualities as well as another reminder of evil in his last name. Who is this well-placed member of Slytherin house?

Answer: Draco Malfoy

Draco is the name of a constellation that looks like a dragon but is in reality a snake. Draco was also the name of an ancient Greek lawmaker known for his cruel laws, which the punishment for breaking was often death. Malfoy comes from mal meaning 'evil'.
8. This person was aptly named as one who gives out punishment and who is not always happy while doing it. Who is this grumpy revenge seeker?

Answer: Alastor Moody

Alastor was the Greek god who sought revenge on people. Moody is a common English word meaning 'not in a good mood or grumpy'.
9. Which of these characters was named for his ability to escape death. Who is this Houdini of the magical world?

Answer: Voldemort

Voldemort is French for 'flight of death', which would obviously mean escaping death as you are running away from it, or making it run away.
10. JKR is well known for her hints, clues and side jokes, such as those found above. So considering this and her love of including elements of Mythology in her books, it is not surprising that she made a direct reference to the Greek guardian of the Underworld. What was surprising, was the name she used for him. What was this name?

Answer: Fluffy

Fluffy was quite obviously modeled after Cerberus the three-headed dog, which guarded the Greek Underworld. Definitely not a name any ancient Greek would have dared use for this dog.
