Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The title character Wishbone is what breed of terrier?

Answer: Jack Russell Terrier

Wishbone is a small, white dog. His owners are the Talbots. His thoughts are voiced by a comedian named Larry Brantley. Wishbone episodes are divided into two segments, one of which tells an actual story of a classic book and the other tells a contemporary story similar to the book but more applicable to the lives of people living in the 1990's.

The contemporary story involves characters like Wishbone's owner Joe Talbot, Joe's mother Ellen, their neighbor Wanda, and Joe's friends Sam and David. None of those characters can understand Wishbone.

In the book story, however, all the characters can understand Wishbone. Wishbone usually plays the main characters in these books.
2. Wanda has always hated Wishbone.

Answer: False

Wanda is not Wishbone's biggest fan, mostly because he digs up her garden. One episode where things seem especially bad between Wanda and Wishbone is "Flea-bitten Bargain," in which Wishbone breaks a jar that Wanda was using to hold the money from the sales of her art, and later the dog gets into her house.

However, Wanda eventually pats Wishbone, and when she returns him to the Talbots' house, she enthusiastically says, "Guess who spent the day at my house?" In the episode "Rushin' to the Bone," when Wishbone doesn't get the part in a dog food commercial that Wanda wanted him to get, Wanda forgives Wishbone, telling him "Believe me when I say that I like you just the way you are."
3. Which "Wishbone" character is the criminal in the "Oliver Twist" episode?

Answer: Zack

Joe, Sam, and David befriend an orphan named Max, who just moved to Oakdale and whose parents only recently died. In this episode, a wave of burglaries hits Oakdale. Wanda was one of the people burglarized and she told the Talbots and their friends that kids were suspected in all of these burglaries. Later in the episode, the Talbots' home is burglarized, and once again kids are suspected. Joe, having seen Max walk off with a hooligan, thinks Max might be responsible although he can't really believe it. At the end of the episode, Wanda's house is once again burglarized and Joe sees the burglar run off holding some of Wanda's stuff. The burglar isn't Max, it's his hooligan friend, who is revealed to be named Zack. Max tells Joe, Sam, and David where Zack keeps his stolen loot, and the three of them call the police, who arrest Zack.

Interesting sidenote: Joe Duffield, the actor who plays Damont, also plays the Artful Dodger in the "Oliver Twist" portion of this episode.
4. In one episode, Sam befriends an unpopular boy who seems to be bad at sports. Who is this boy?

Answer: Nathaniel

The kids are playing hockey and they choose teams. Nobody wants Nathaniel on their team. Sam volunteers to sit out so Nathaniel can play. Joe and David get upset with Sam for this; they don't want their friend who is good at sports sitting out in favor of a kid who is neither their friend nor good at sports. Nathaniel decides not to play so he doesn't cause any problems, but as he skates away, he falls over and most of the kids laugh at him. Sam, feeling sorry for him, befriends him and hangs out with him. They discover that they have something in common: their parents divorced. Wishbone accidentally knocks over a treasured birthday present of Sam's: a glass unicorn figurine. The figurine looks like it's about to fall on the floor and shatter, but Nathaniel miraculously catches it. Sam then discovers that Nathaniel can be a goalie. Sam then makes Nathaniel the goalie of her hockey team, a move that everybody is skeptical of even Nathaniel. Nathaniel turns out to be a tremendous goalie. Damont then says he wants Nathaniel on his team next game. Sam refuses.

Joe and David suspect that Sam and Nathaniel may be romantically involved. Sam insists this isn't the case.
5. Which of the books is one of the few books for which Wishbone does not play the main character in the show's version of the story?

Answer: Don Quixote

Wishbone doesn't play the main character if the main character is female or is difficult to relate to. He plays Sancho Panza in the "Don Quixote" story. Other stories in which Wishbone does not play the main character include an episode based on the story of Joan of Arc, "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," and "Northanger Abbey."
6. What did people do in 1864 according to Wishbone?

Answer: Eat dinner

In an episode based on "Journey to the Center of the Earth," Wishbone digs up something in Wanda's yard. Joe, Sam, David, and Ellen clean it and analyze it. When they find out it was from 1864, Ellen asks "What was going on back then?" Sam said that railroads were built in the West. Joe said that there was a gold rush. David mentioned the Civil War. Wishbone responded to Ellen's question, and all of the kids' responses, with some variation of "People ate dinner." David's response turns out to be the most relevant: it was a medal given to a soldier. Wanda knows all about the soldier, and tells us he was also the first mayor of Oakdale.
7. How did Wishbone/Faust know that he was in heaven?

Answer: There were no cats

Wishbone did an episode based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's version of the legendary story "Faust," a story of a man who reads a lot and learns everything there is to know, but is bored and lonely. He makes a deal with the devil. The devil will give Faust whatever he wants regardless of how it affects other people.

When Faust finds the perfect experience, the devil takes his soul to hell. In Goethe's version of the story, an angel rescues Faust from the deal and takes Faust to heaven. The Wishbone version of the story ends with Wishbone/Faust saying "This must be heaven.

There are no cats!"
8. In the "Wishbone" version of "Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves," when Cassim gets trapped in the secret cave and forgets the password, which of the following phrases doesn't he try?

Answer: Open cereal

Wishbone/Ali Baba tells his brother Cassim about a secret cave with treasure. Cassim goes there and when he sees all the treasure, he is very excited about taking all of it, until the door closes. Cassim knows that the secret password mentioned some kind of grain, but he can't remember which one. As a kid I was amused watching him trying all of these wrong passwords.

The correct password is, of course, "Open Sesame!"
9. What subject was Joe bad at in the beginning of the episode based on "The Time Machine"?

Answer: Math

At the beginning of the episode, Joe shows his mom the C on his latest test. His mom tells him that if he doesn't get a B on his report card, she won't let him try out for the basketball team. David gives Joe a calculator to help him. Joe loses his calculator, and does worse on the second test (he gets a D). Wanda decides to help out Joe by making him the cashier at her yard sale.

At first, Joe struggles mightily with this. Then Wanda gives him a little help. This little bit of help immediately turns Joe into a math genius. Wishbone gives Joe his calculator back and tells the audience that he (Wishbone) hid it.
10. In the movie "Dog Days of the West," who is rumored to be a tyrant?

Answer: Wanda

In this movie, Wishbone saves a girl's life. Wanda was walking Wishbone at the time, and a news team hails "Wanda and her dog Wishbone" as heroes. Then the news reporter finds out more information about Wanda and twists it to make a story about whether or not she's a hero or a tyrant. Things get worse when a man seems to find out that Wanda wasn't the legal owner of Oakdale Chronicle. Fortunately, an older man tells the kids that Wanda IS the legal owner of the Oakdale Chronicle, and he tells the story of how this happened. Wishbone finds evidence that the old man's story is true.

Then the Chronicle runs an article saying that Wanda is the legal owner of the Chronicle. The news reporter then decides to look elsewhere to find a story.
