Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Examinations: The national average composite score on the ACT exam has held constant since 1997. How high are American students scoring?

Answer: 21.0

The ACT is comprised of reading, English, math, and science sections and is scored out of a possible 36. Oregon had the highest average score in 2001 (22.6), but only 11% of graduates were tested. Washington, D.C., had the lowest score (17.4).
2. Naughty Literature: What book was "removed" from the Maple Hill School in Connecticut because it caused "unruly behavior among children"?

Answer: The Adventures of Captain Underpants

3. Papal Irregularities: Which 16th century Pope once publicly denied the existence of God?

Answer: Leo X

Like many other religious officials at the time, Leo X sold indulgences which would "exonerate" the holders of all previously committed sins. He used these monies to fund his sumptuous lifestyle.
4. Elementary, My Dear: Which chemical element derives its name from the Greek for "hard to get"?

Answer: Dysprosium

This 66th element was discovered in 1886 by de Boisbaudran. Dysprosium is a "rare earth" used in nuclear reactors. Praseodymium (59) gets its name from the Greek for "green twin"; Thulium (69), from the ancient name for Scandinavia (Thule); and Dubnium (105), from Dubna, Russia.
5. Genetically Modified Question: What is the more commonly used technique for inserting modified genes into a plant?

Answer: Agrobacterium tumefaciens

This method is usually reserved for dicots, which are broad-leaved flowering plants like soybeans, tomatoes, blackberries, potatoes, rape (the source of canola oil), and peanuts. A. tumefaciens is an unusual bacterium that can integrate its genetic material with that of a host plant, making it an ideal vector for producing GM plants.
6. M*A*S*H: What was the name of B.J. Hunnicutt's infant daughter?

Answer: Erin

My parents were avid fans of this show, and named me after Hunnicutt's daughter...
7. Mascots: What is the unusual nickname of the Rhode Island School of Design?

Answer: Nads

Hey, I only write the quizzes.... :)
8. Internet Fads: What is the term for a two-word search query, sans quotation marks, that produces only one distinct hit?

Answer: A Googlewhack

Try searching on Google for "humorous anisocoria," "candied nondisjunction," or "rubisco filth" (without the quotation marks, of course) for example. The official website for this diversion is www.googlewhack.com
9. Smallish Buildings: The world's largest dollhouse, created by John and Jan Zweifel, is a replica of which famous edifice?

Answer: The White House

This enormous creation weighs 10 tons and took about 13 years to reproduce.
10. U.S. Law: Which Amendment to the United States Constitution gives Congress the authority to collect income taxes?

Answer: 16th

This Amendment was ratified on February 3rd, 1913.
