Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Barb' is the name of a famous dog in the history of which breed? (hint: it's a herder)

Answer: Australian Kelpie

'Black Barb' was a pivotal nineteenth century individual in the breeding of the Kelpie, a dog that has a mixed lineage (possibly including dingo in its bloodline). Barb was a black Kelpie, and was named after a racehorse.
2. The memorial at which World War II-related site bears the Latin inscription translatable as 'we, who were conquered by William, have now liberated the land of our conqueror'? (hint: think where William the Conqueror came from)

Answer: Bayeux Cemetery

This eloquent sentence is engraved on the memorial itself, whilst the cemetery contains the bodies of 4,868 Allied servicemen who fell during Operation Overlord in 1944. The link with William the Conqueror is the clue here, as he came from Normandy.
3. Which illness literally translates into English as 'bad air'? (hint: it's *not* anything to do with respiratory problems!)

Answer: Malaria

Malaria = mal aria = bad air, from the Italian. It's transmitted via mosquito-borne parasites, and has symptoms including shaking, chills, fever and nausea. It is a very serious disease that can be fatal.
4. What is the first name of Skinner - Mulder and Scully's superior - in TV's 'The X Files'?

Answer: Walter

Skinner started out as an enigmatic figure who sometimes seemed to help Mulder and Scully and sometimes hinder them. 'Mitch' is in fact the first name of the actor who plays Skinner - Mitch Pileggi - whilst
'William' B. Davis plays the Cigarette Smoking Man.
5. In which Indian state is Mumbai (Bombay) located?

Answer: Maharashtra

Mumbai (formerly Bombay) is on the western coast of India on the Arabian Sea. The city is famous for its street food, and especially the seafood cuisine gathered from the bay it is built on. It's also celebrated as the home of 'Bollywood', the Indian film industry (which is the largest in the world, and produces over 900 films each year).
6. Who painted the ceiling of the Sistine chapel?

Answer: Michelangelo

This one should have been a little bit easier! Michelangelo Buonarroti painted the Sistine chapel's ceiling between 1508 and 1512. Interestingly, the chapel keeps exactly the same dimensions as Solomon's Temple (stated in the Bible as 40.93 metres long and 13.41 metres wide).
7. What exactly does the Hebrew phrase 'mazel tov' mean?

Answer: Good luck

'Mazel' means star and 'tov' means good. Therefore, the phrase literally means 'may the stars be good to you'.
8. In the 2002 football World Cup, which team did England beat 1-0 at the group stage, thanks to a penalty?

Answer: Argentina

David Beckham's penalty gave England the crucial lead they needed to win the game on 7 June 2002. Sadly, England could progress no further when they encountered eventual winners Brazil in the quarter finals.
9. In which Australian city was Kylie Minogue born?

Answer: Melbourne

Kylie was born on 28 May 1968, and went on to her first taste of fame when she hit Australian and British TV screens as Charlene in 'Neighbours'. Since then she has enjoyed amazing success with a string of pop hits spanning three decades.
10. In Richard Adams's classic book 'Watership Down', what is the name of General Woundwort's second-in-command?

Answer: Captain Campion

Captain Campion was the Chief of Woundwort's Owsla, or ruling group; there was no Sergeant Holly in the book, but there was a Captain Holly at the Sandleford Warren. Blackavar was the name of one of the inmates at Woundwort's Efrafa, and Bigwig was Hazel's sidekick from Sandleford.
