Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. '___ of the Tiger' - song by Survivor

Answer: Overnight flight

The phrase 'red-eye' can be used in several situations, one of which is as a synonym for an overnight flight. The second use of 'red-eye' is the frustrating phenomenon in photography that makes your subject look somewhat more demonic that you would have hoped.

'Eye of the Tiger' was the theme song for the film 'Rocky III' starring Sylvester Stallone. However, it was not always supposed to be that way. Survivor members Frankie Sullivan and Jim Peterik originally wrote the song for 'The Karate Kid', but Stallone asked them if he could use it for 'Rocky III' after he was denied the use of Queen's 'Another One Bites the Dust'.
2. '___ Shots!' - movie with Charlie Sheen

Answer: More than warm

The phrase 'red hot' suggests that something is extremely hot, and is derived from the fact that some materials (particularly metals) glow red when they are heated to high temperatures. The phrase can also be used to refer to something that is extremely popular at that point in time.
3. 'White ___' - song by Dido

Answer: Warning sign

As well as being a general warning sign ('when he told me about his 18 cats it was a bit of a red flag'), the term 'red flag warning' is also used by the US National Weather Service to alert firefighters that conditions are ripe for a wildfire. The red flag is also used in motor sports such as Formula 1 to bring a stop to the race when conditions are too dangerous to continue. Dido's "White Flag" is from 2003.
4. 'All the ___ We Cannot See' - Anthony Doerr novel

Answer: Stop signal

'All the Light We Cannot See' won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2015, an award that has previously been won by classics including Edith Wharton's 'The Age of Innocence' and John Kennedy Toole's 'A Confederacy of Dunces'. As well as being a general term for a stop signal, the phrase 'red light' has been used as a song title by a variety of bands such as David Nail, Linda Clifford and The Strokes.
5. '___bagger' - post American Civil War opportunist

Answer: Premiere locale

The term 'carpetbagger' was by no means a compliment, and was used to refer to those who came from the north of the United States to the South after the Civil War, seeking to take advantage of the local population and the general economic upheaval.

Dating all the way back to Ancient Greece, the red carpet is traditionally used for heads of state. The use of a red carpet for celebrity publicity is a relatively recent phenomenon, and the first appearance at the Academy Awards was in 1961.
6. 'See What She ___' - song by Dirty Projectors

Answer: Getting angry

'Seeing red', or 'to see red' for those that prefer their verbs in the infinitive form, is not clear in its origin. It has been suggested that it may originate from bullfighting, but could equally have come from the red flags used to signify war.

Dirty Projectors are an American alternative rock band, known for their fairly unique style that has been likened to artists including David Byrne and Frank Zappa. The band have had an ever-changing line-up since their foundation in 2002, with the mainstay being the frontman David Longstreth. The song here is "See What She Seeing".
7. 'Last of the Summer ___' - British TV series

Answer: Alcoholic drink

'Last of the Summer Wine' is one of the most enduring sitcoms in British TV history, running for a titanic 31 series between its inception in 1973 and conclusion in 2010. It was largely written by prolific comedy writer Roy Clarke, who is also responsible for 'Keeping up Appearances' and 'Open All Hours'.

Although 'red wine' is used as a catch-all for any wine made from black grapes, the colour can vary significantly depending on the age and composition of the wine.
8. '___ ___ Navy' - song by Village People (two words)

Answer: Owing money

The origin of the phrase 'in the red' is thought to be that red ink was used to signify a company that was losing money. This situation also gave rise to the opposite expression 'in the black', meaning that a company was financially secure. 'In the Navy' was released by Village People in 1978, and reached number three in the Billboard Hot 100 and number two in the United Kingdom.
9. 'Miller's ___ing' - Coen Brothers movie

Answer: Nonprofit organisation

The Red Cross was initially founded in 1863, and has the authority to help and protect the victims of both national and international conflicts. The organisation has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize three times throughout its history - 1917 (during WWI), 1944 (during WWII) and 1963 (on its centenary). In additional to the International Committee of the Red Cross, national societies of either the Red Cross and the Red Crescent operate in almost every country on Earth.

"Miller's Crossing" came out in 1990.
10. 'Source ___' - movie with Jake Gyllenhaal

Answer: Emergency situation

The film 'Source Code' tells the story of an army captain (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) who has to go inside an alternate reality on the hunt for a criminal. In computing, 'source code' is used to refer to the code written by a programmer in a language of their choice. That code is then converted to binary machine code by a compiler to allow the computer to read the instructions therein.

Whilst the phrase 'code red' has come to mean any kind of emergency, it can have specific meanings in some situations. For example, a 'code red' in a hospital is usually indicative of a fire somewhere in the building.
