Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There was a guide dog named "Lucky" who was responsible for the death of four of his owners.

Answer: False

According to Barbara Mikkelson, at www.snopes.com, "Any dog deemed unsuitable for any reason is weeded out long before it goes home with an owner. One out of five dogs is rejected."

To make a long story short, if he had been responsible for even one death, he would have been retired to a family to never "guide" again.
2. What was the name of the goat that killed its owner?

Answer: Snowball

This is a true urban legend. Carl Hulsey bought a white billy goat, and consistently beat it to make it more aggressive, and to make it a better "guard" goat. It had less than desired consequences, though, as one day, Snowball head-butted Hulsey twice in the stomach, causing him to fall down twice. After Hulsey climbed up the steps to the porch, Snowball followed, and knocked him off the porch. Hulsey didn't survive the five foot fall, as Snowball's "love" taps caused abdominal trauma, and ruptured Hulsey's stomach.

The animal control confiscated Snowball. He was later adopted out, neutered, and rechristened Snow.
3. What kind of bird has been reported carrying away a small dog?

Answer: Eagle Owl

Supposedly, an eagle carried away someone's housepet. Several breeds of dogs have been mentioned, including Chihuahuas, Poodles, and Pomeranians. There have been reports of pets being carried off, including the story of an Eagle Owl carrying away a Jack Springer. In Maine, a Great Horned Owl carried away a Pekingese/Poodle, unfortunately killing it.
4. Can you actually buy a penguin from penguinwarehouse.com?

Answer: No

The website was designed for a portfolio for James Knickelbein. From snopes.com, "The site was put together by James Knickelbein (one of the two men behind the PandaMail service), who wrote back in December 2001 that "I wouldn't say it's a 'load of crap', but it is certainly a fictitious website, made for various reasons. I have not ever been on the Ice (though this is certainly also not the only source of penguins, as there are many jungle species)." "
5. Some brands of what item are falsely said to be radioactive?

Answer: Kitty Litter

While just an urban legend, some brands of kitty litter are said to be radioactive. This urban legend all stems from one news story in 1994 that reported that the kitty's leavings, not the litter, was radioactive. The story mutated into the present story we see today.
6. In what country did a tourist unintentionally have their own pet served as the main course?

Answer: It didn't happen

The urban legend is "Tourists who send their dog to a Chinese restaurant's kitchen to be fed end up being served their own pooch." It also happens to be untrue. There are many variations to this story, going from where the tourists are from, to how the dog was served.
7. Mr. Ed is actually a zebra.

Answer: False

The belief is that black and white zebra translates a solid colored horse on black and white TV. Thankfully, though, it's a false legend. Mr. Ed was played by Bamboo Harvester, a palomino horse. One way to tell the difference? Mr. Ed had a big white blaze, down the middle of his head. A zebra has no such marking.
8. What kind of fish has scared divers sent to fix dams?

Answer: It didn't happen

This legend, while untrue, also has many variations, usually on where it happened. It's said to have happened in Texas, Georgia and Colorado, to mention a few. Sometimes the type of fish changes from a catfish to a carp or pike. The size of the catfish also varies, usually averaging the size of a small car.

The largest real catfish on record weighs in at around 123 lbs, much less than the size of a small car (unless you're talking about a Matchbox car!)
9. Does a duck's quack echo?

Answer: Yes

"Mythbusters", the popular Discovery Channel show, did an experiment with two ducks. They found that while it was hard to get the ducks to quack, once they did, there was an echo. The only problem was that the echo was fairly quiet.
10. Is the uncooked rice traditionally thrown at wedding dangerous to birds?

Answer: No

The uncooked rice thrown at weddings in no more dangerous to birds than the uncooked rice grown in fields. The only danger of rice being thrown at a wedding is that it can be slippery when stepped on.
