Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. ANIMALS: Which of the following mammals became extinct during the late Pleistocene epoch?

Answer: Dire Wolf

There exists argument amongst palaeontologists as to whether the Dire Wolf originated in North or South America. The prevalent belief is that it was in the north and this is due, in large parts, to the fact that over 130 fossil sites have been found in North America whereas a significantly smaller number (three by 2012) have been uncovered in South America. Dire Wolf is considered to be an opportunistic hunter rather than a skilled one.

It was slower than the Grey Wolf and its extinction is linked to its inability to adapt to the loss of its regular food sources.

These food sources may have faded with either changes in climate, the arrival of humans or a combination of both.
2. BRAIN TEASERS: Fill in the missing vowels to identify this character from a popular children's series by J.K. Rowling. RMS LPN

Answer: Remus Lupin

Remus John Lupin appears in the Harry Potter series and suffers from lycanthropy. In other words he turns into a werewolf when the moon is full. Remus is a half blood who was appointed to the House of Gryffindor during his days as a student at Hogwarts. He later returned to the school to teach Defence Against the Dark Arts. Also known as Moony he married Nymphadora Tonks, was a member of The Order of the Phoenix and was one of the men responsible for the creation of the Marauder's Map.
3. CELEBRITIES: At one time engaged to Alyssa Milano, he played the role of Bailey Salinger in the television series "Party of Five". Who is he?

Answer: Scott Wolf

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Scott's other prominent roles on television included those of Dr Jake Hartman on "Everwood" and journalist Chad Dexter in the series "V". "Party of Five" ran between 1994 and 2000 with Scott reprising his role in 143 episodes. His engagement to Milano lasted a little over a year. In 2004 he married Kelley Limp with whom he has a son named Jackson.
4. ENTERTAINMENT: In the comic book world of "G.I. Joe" some of the Ice-Vipers come equipped with a W.O.L.F. vehicle. What does the acronym W.O.L.F., in this instance, stand for?

Answer: Winter Operational Light Fighting

The Cobra W.O.L.F. is fitted out with a pair of ski-torpedoes called "Snarls" as well as a supply of surface to air missiles called, appropriately, "Whams". The Vipers represent the majority of the soldiers within the Cobra organisation and they each have a code that precedes their name to indicate their skill set. For example, the Ice-Vipers are adept at combat in frigid zones.
5. FOR CHILDREN: Does the Big Bad Wolf appear in the 2001 movie "Shrek"?

Answer: Yes

The Big Bad Wolf makes regular appearances throughout the series of "Shrek" films, however, he is nothing like the character portrayed in the fairy tales. For example, in the first film, he is one of the characters banished to Shrek's swamp where he is seen as a friend of the Three Little Pigs.
6. GENERAL: Some Native American tribes have been known to call the full moon of which month the "wolf" moon?

Answer: January

The American Indians applied names to their moons to indicate the time of the year. A large number have named the January moon to reflect the severity of the season (Cheyenne - Moon of the Strong Cold, Algonquin - Sun Has Not Strength to Thaw) but others have bought animals into their reasoning (Haida - Bear Hunting Moon, Tlingit - Goose Moon).

The use of the wolf appears to have stemmed from legends of wolves gathering on the fringes of villages and expressing their hunger during the harshness of winter.

The Sioux probably express it best, naming their January full moon Wolves Run Together.
7. GEOGRAPHY: The "Capitoline Wolf" is a bronze statue depicting two infants and a she-wolf and is inspired by the legends of which capital city?

Answer: Rome

The two children that form part of the Capitoline Wolf are Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome. The story tells us that the she-wolf rescues the twins from the Tiber River and raises them. Since ancient times this legend has remained as a symbol of Rome.

The statue has been at the Capitoline Museum in the Piazza del Campidoglio (Rome) since 1471, however, there are a number of them dotted all around the world including some sent to the other cities mentioned in the question above. Mussolini sent a copy to New York as a goodwill gesture during the 1930's, the mayor of Rome donated one to Brasilia to mark that city's formation and the Bucharest one sits in Rome Square being one of five that were gifted to the country (Romania) after World War I.
8. HISTORY: The battle of White Wolf Mountain was fought just prior to the start of the Three Kingdoms period in which country's history?

Answer: China

The Three Kingdoms period in China was a time of terrible disunity and was notable for the savage amount of infighting between various warlords right across the country. The Battle of Wolf Mountain took place in Northern China and was a confrontation between Cao Cao, a warlord and the penultimate Chancellor of the Eastern Han Dynasty, and the Wuhuan, a tribe of nomads who were aligned with Cao Cao's rivals. Cao Cao adopted a famous Chinese idiom, "swiftness is the key in war" and used this tactic to advantage to defeat a force of superior, though disorganised, numbers. Considered a tyrant, he was also seen as a military genius, Cao Cao would become one of the major players during the Three Kingdoms period, laying the groundwork for what would become the Cao Wei State.
9. HOBBIES: Aconitum (Wolfsbane) is also known as which of the following?

Answer: Queen of Poisons

With dark green leaves and purple or yellow flowers wolfsbane is also known as aconite, Devil's helmet and blue rocket. Its roots produce the deadly toxin "bikh", which is used for both hunting (in particular bear) and warfare. Whilst large doses will cause instant death, it can be detoxified and used in traditional medicine as a diuretic and diaphoretic.
10. HUMANITIES: Which of the following is a Turkish surname that means wolf?

Answer: Kurt

Kurt is predominantly used in Germany as a given name. There it can mean one who is bold or provides wise counsel and it represents a shorter version of the Dutch name Koenraad (Conrad in English). The Turkish use of Kurt as a surname appears to have its origins with the Bashkirs, who stem from the Russian republic of Bashkortostan, and their use of it in the form of Kort. There is also some school of thought that it may have surfaced from the Turkmenistan word Gurt.
The other options above all mean wolf, Vuk is Serbian, Zev is Hebrew and Farkas Hungarian.
