Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. LITERATURE: "Cry Wolf", a novel set during the Italian invasion of Ethiopia, was written by which Zambian born author?

Answer: Wilbur Smith

Four people, Jack Barton, and American engineer, Major Swales, a British hustler, Vicky Campbell, a journalist, and Gregarious, the nephew of an Ethiopian prince, seek to smuggle four amoured cars complete with ammunition into Ethiopia, on the eve of the Italian invasion of the country. They end up embroiled in a battle at the Wells of Chaldi, a barren piece of land that appears to be of little importance. A love triangle forms between Jack, the Major and Vicky Campbell.

Wilbur Smith was an accountant turned novelist. Specialising in historical fiction, he published 49 books during his lifetime.
2. MOVIES: Information is being leaked out of Goa, India, leading to the destruction of British merchant ships. In which 1980 movie are Gregory Peck and Roger Moore called in to save the day?

Answer: The Sea Wolves

It is 1943 and the British know that the information is coming out of Goa but, because the region is a part of Portugal, who was neutral at the time, they are unable to launch an attack on the region using conventional force. They set about recruiting British ex-pat members of the Calcutta Light Horse who are all prepared to "do their bit" for the Mother Country.

The men are led by Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis Pugh (Gregory Peck), Captain Gavin Stewart (Roger Moore) and Colonel W.H. Grice (David Niven).

The film was based on an actual event during World War II.
3. MUSIC: In 1966, who informed us that "Li'l Red Riding Hood" was "ev'rything that a big bad wolf could want"?

Answer: Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs

The use of Charles Perrault's fairy tale of "Little Red Riding Hood" is purely a metaphorical device. The singer takes on the role of a wolf in sheep's clothing, using lies and deception to take advantage of a young woman/girl. Grandma does not enter the picture at all. This song would reach number two on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and would be kept out of top spot, ironically, by The Troggs and their hit "Wild Thing".

An interesting footnote to this song is that Sam the Sham had a group of female back-up singers that performed under the name of the Sham-ettes. As soon as "Li'l Red Riding Hood" became a success, the Sham-ettes hastily recorded and released a rebuttal called "(Hey There) Big Bad Wolf". It didn't do well.
4. PEOPLE: Which North Carolina author was the subject of David Herbert Donald's biographical work "Look Homeward", which won the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for Biography?

Answer: Thomas Wolfe

Donald's title was taken from Wolfe's debut and, possibly, most famous novel "Look Homeward, Angel" (1929). Wolfe's novel, which was a thinly disguised autobiographical work, caused such a stir in his hometown of Asheville that Wolfe stayed away from the area for a number of years.

The work was well received by critics and was a best seller in both the United Kingdom and Germany. Wolfe would pen four rather lengthy novels in his lifetime as well as a series of short stories and novellas. He passed away in 1938 at the tender age of 37.

His legacy however, was profound. He would inspire writers such as Betty Smith and Robert Morgan. He was idolized by the likes of Ray Bradbury and Jack Kerouac and Hunter S. Thompson garnered his most famous phrase "fear and loathing" from Wolfe's posthumously published "The Web and the Rock" (1939).
5. RELIGION: Which of the following saints is believed to have befriended a wolf?

Answer: St. Francis

While St. Francis of Assisi was living in Gubbio, a city in Umbria, a wolf appeared outside the city's gates. It attacked animals before graduating to humans and devouring them. The citizens of Gubbio were terrified to leave the safety of their walls. St. Francis ventured out to meet the wolf who, duly, charged at him. St. Francis made the sign of the cross and the beast fell silent at his feet. Francis then admonished him for his deeds but also advised that he and the town's people would forgive his sins if he changed his ways.

The wolf placed his paw onto Francis' outstretched hand as a sign that the pact was made.
6. SCIENCE: The Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome relates to an additional electrical pathway in which organ of the human body?

Answer: Heart

The additional electrical pathway, in those that are afflicted, is present at birth and travels between the upper and lower chambers of the heart. It can cause rapid heartbeats, though not all people born with this additional pathway will be afflicted. Whilst these rapid heartbeats may not be life threatening they could lead to some serious heart issues down the track. Surgeons can conduct an ablation which will permanently correct the irregular heart rhythm.

Some symptoms to look out for include palpitations, lightheadedness, shortness of breath, fatigue and chest pain. Episodes can occur while the heart is at rest or under duress and can last for seconds or for hours.
7. SPORT: Founded in 1989, the Minnesota Timberwolves began competing in which of the following organizations?

Answer: NBA

Based in Minneapolis, the Timberwolves are a part of the league's Western Conference, Northwest Division. They struggled in their early years, but their fortunes changed in 1995 when they secured Kevin Garnett in the NBA Draft. They would participate in the next eight finals series.

In 2004 they would win their first division championship. The following year they missed the finals and commenced a rebuilding phase. They would make the playoffs again in 2018.
8. TELEVISION: The Hanna-Barbera cartoon series "It's the Wolf" contained three main characters; Brindlehound, Lambsy and which wolf named after a fungus?

Answer: Mildew

"It's the Wolf" was one of four segments in the original "Cattanooga Cats" animated series that ran between 1969 and 1971. In each episode Mildew (the wolf) has but one goal - catch Lambsy and make a meal out of him. Every time he gets close he runs into a problem, Lambsy's guardian, a sheepdog called Bristlehound. Bristlehound is usually alerted to the danger by Lambsy's cry of "It's the Wool-uff, it's the Wool-uff", to which Bristle responds "I'll save you Lambsy". Mildew ends up getting pounded and is then sent sailing through the air, usually crying out "spoilsport" at the canine guardian.

Mildew became such a popular character in the series that he was utilized by Hanna-Barbera in other projects. He would co-host, with Snagglepuss, the "Laff-A-Lympics" section on the "Scooby's All Stars" (Scooby Doo) show between 1977 and 1978 and he made appearances in "Jellystone" in 2021.

(Footnote) The other three answer options were all insects.
9. VIDEO GAMES: Sniper Wolf is a ruthless assassin that appears in which of the following series of games?

Answer: Metal Gear Solid

In her own words, "I was born on a battlefield. Raised on a battlefield. Gunfire, sirens, and screams... They were my lullabies." Sniper Wolf is a Special Forces soldier who was trained by the Big Boss. She would join the renegade black ops outfit Foxhound and take part in the 2005 revolt on Shadow Moses Island. Addicted to Diazepam, she is a highly skilled sharpshooter who had been known to lie still for days without movement in order to kill her targets.
10. WORLD: The Enfield Beast is an imaginary creature that is sometimes used in heraldry. It contains which feature of the wolf in its makeup?

Answer: Tail

One of the earliest known appearances of the Enfield Beast was on the crest of the Irish clan of the O'Kelly's (Ó Cellaigh clan). It was also noted in the "Leabhar Ua Maine", a 1392 Irish genealogical compilation. The beast is an amalgam of the fox (its head), the eagle (legs and talons), it has a greyhound's chest, the body of a lion and the tail of the wolf.
