Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Steve Hackett, Ray Wilson, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Anthony Phillips were all, at some time or other, members of a famous band. I'll make it easy for you: so were Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel. Was it...?

Answer: Genesis

Pretty stupid possibilities I gave there. But hey, not everyone was alive and kicking in the sixties and/or seventies. Those of you who enjoy really tough questions, are invited to name all groups in which the above mentioned musicians ever played. Good luck! By the way, did you know that Iron Butterfly's biggest hit 'Ina-gada-da-vida' was really called 'In the garden of Eden' but that the singer was too drunk to clearly pronounce these words, when the song was recorded?
2. Which baseball legend was the only person who hit three home runs in a World Series game and who could repeat that performance two years later?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Only two baseball players hit three home runs in a World Series game. Reggie Jackson did it once, but Babe Ruth did it in both 1926 and 1928. In between, in 1927, he hit 60 homeruns (or 14 % of all the homeruns of that season!). Fascinating trivia: Ty Cobb was named after the ancient city of Tyre or Tyrus.

His father, W.H. Cobb, had just read a book about the sack of that city by Alexander the Great. Imagine naming your kid London or Paris... Why, David Beckham called his son Brooklyn!
3. In its early days, ancient Rome was ruled by what kind of government?

Answer: kings

Most people immediately associate Rome with emperors. However, after it was founded by Romulus, Rome was governed by seven kings in a row. After the last king, Tarquinius Superbus, had raped the chaste Lucretia, he was kicked out. Rome then turned into a republic, in which consuls played a major role.

More than 700 years after its foundation emperors finally took over. And czars obviously come from Russia (although the word czar is derived from the name Caesar).
4. Which singer-songwriter of the late seventies, early eighties, made records like 'The Stranger' (1977), 'Glass Houses' ('80), 'Songs in the Attic' ('81) and 'The Nylon Curtain' ('82)?

Answer: Billy Joel

Ah, yes, Billy Joel... I hope you remember songs like 'You were the one', 'Goodnight Saigon', 'Uptown Girl', 'She's always a woman' or 'Just the way you are'. I sure do. Oh god, I think I'm gonna cry: am I that old already????
5. Which red-haired singer, who hates to be compared with Kate Bush, started playing the piano before the age of three and gained international success with albums like 'Under the Pink' and 'Boys for Pele?'

Answer: Tori Amos

Her real name is Myra Ellen Amos, but after a boyfriend told her that 'she didn't look like an Ellen, more like a Tori', she switched to Tori. For all you Belgians, who read this: An Pierlé (a Belgian female singer) hates to be compared with Tori Amos! So stop comparing!
6. Which people won the Punic Wars?

Answer: Romans

The Romans defeated mighty Carthage with a splendid 3 - 0 victory. The most famous of the three Punic Wars was fought by Hannibal (on the Carthaginian side) and by Scipio and Quintus Fabius Maximus Cunctator (for the Romans). Scipio won the decisive battle at Zama, near Carthage.

After the third Punic War the city of the Carthaginians (or 'Puni' in Latin) was completely destroyed by the Romans, who spread salt on the whole surface of the former city, just to make sure that nothing would ever grow there again.
7. In "Musical Express" (1963) the four Beatles filled in a questionnaire. One of them gave these answers: (Instruments played) rhythm guitar+harmonica+percussion+piano, (Favourite singers) Shirelles+Miracles+Chuck Jackson+Ben E. King, (Favourite actresses) Juliette Greco+Sophia Loren, (Favourite drinks) whisky+tea, (Professional ambition) to be rich and famous. Which Beatle gave these answers?

Answer: John

How about that? "To be rich and famous" as a quote from John Lennon. In the same year he uttered these famous words: "On the next number, would those in the cheap seats clap their hands? The rest of you rattle your jewelry."
Well, okay, he was a decent chap. But Ringo is my favourite Beatle.
8. What movie, about a victorious Roman general who kills the son of queen Tamora and who declines the imperial throne, stars Anthony Hopkins in the title role and Jessica Lange as Queen Tamora? The movie is based on a play by a certain William Shakespeare.

Answer: Titus

Shakespeare wrote about the fictitious general Titus Andronicus. Director Julie Taymor made a gruesome but very aesthetic version of it. Hopkins is impressive, as usual, and Lange is still very seductive. Just a bit of trivia: when the old emperor dies, the supporters of his two sons take the streets with banners in the colours of AS Roma and Lazio Roma, two famous soccer teams.
9. Which very famous 1979 movie, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, is loosely based on the novel 'Heart of Darkness'? The horror, the horror, if you don't know the answer to this question... Note that the title of the movie holds one long word, that refers to the common bond (though the exact link to the answers may be considered 'not entirely correct').

Answer: Apocalypse Now

Not only is the story of the movie loosely based on Joseph Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness' (a man goes up a river to meet another man, named Kurtz), but captain Kurtz in the movie also reads a poem by T.S. Eliot, named 'The Hollow Men' (starting with the words: 'Mistah Kurthz, he dead'). Eliot took his inspiration from Conrad's book. And so on, and so on...
Although six weeks of filming were scheduled, the whole shoot took nearly a year and a half. Director Coppola lost 100 pounds, while filming...
10. What links all the correct answers? You only need family names (if you have full names) and in question 9 you only need the longest word.

Answer: Bible

Genesis, Ruth, Kings, Joel and Amos are all books of the Old Testament, whereas the other titles are books of the New Testament: Romans, John, Titus and Revelations (which tells of the Apocalypse. The answers are more or less in the traditional order of the books, Genesis being the first book of the Bible and Revelations being the last. I could have added the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke (e.g. Luke Skywalker) or Daniel (e.g. a song by Elton John) or even Exodus (the famous movie), but quizzes like these shouldn't be TOO easy, should they? I hope you have found enlightenment in the end. Whatever: always look on the bright side of life...
