The idea of seven-day weeks is not sacrosanct nor even particularly scientific. It made sense to the ancient Babylonians, to Alexander the Great, to the Emperor Constantine and to several other highly-influential people. So that's what we've got.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Howard Cosell teamed with Frank Gifford and "Dandy" Don Meredith to produce what long-running ABC television programme?

Answer: Monday Night Football

Cosell's tenure on "Monday Night Football" began with the programme's inception in 1970 and ended in 1983. The chemistry between the three announcers in their canary yellow blazers was sometimes more entertaining than the football games they broadcast.
2. In 1966, who sang "Monday, Monday / So good to me / Monday mornin' / It was all I hoped it would be / But Monday mornin' / Monday mornin' couldn't guarantee / That Monday evenin' you would still be here with me"?

Answer: The Mamas and the Papas

John Phillips, one of the Mamas and the Papas, wrote "Monday, Monday." Phillips said he wrote the entire song, music and lyrics, in twenty minutes. Time well spent as the recording went to number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and won the group the Grammy in 1967 for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
3. According to the 19th century nursery rhyme, what is the future/fate of a child born on a Monday?

Answer: fair of face

Fortune-telling rhymes based on the day of the week on which a child is born have existed in English since the 16th century. The following one was first published in 1838: "Monday's child is fair of face, Tuesday's child is full of grace. Wednesday's child is full of woe, Thursday's child has far to go. Friday's child is loving and giving, Saturday's child works hard for a living. And the child born on the Sabbath day is bonny and blithe, good and gay."
4. To what does the title refer in the 1978 Lawrence and Lee stage play and the 1981 motion picture "First Monday in October"?

Answer: the US Supreme Court's term

The annual term of the Supreme Court of the United States begins on the first Monday in October and concludes in the following June or July. Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee (the same team that wrote "Inherit the Wind") wrote "First Monday in October" about the first woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court. Answer: Portuguese

The days of the week in Portuguese are "Segunda-feira" (Monday), "Terça-feira" (Tuesday), "Quarta-feira" (Wednesday), "Quinta-feira" (Thursday), "Sexta-feira" (Friday), "Sábado" (Saturday) and "Domingo" (Sunday).

Other words for Monday are "Mandag" (Danish), "Maandag" (Dutch), "Maanantai" (Finnish), "Lundi" (French), "Montag" (German), "Lunedi" (Italian), "Mandag" (Norwegian), "Luni" (Romanian) and "Lunes" (Spanish).
6. In North America, what might one reasonably expect a Monday morning quarterback to be doing on Monday morning?

Answer: critiquing teams' weekend performance

Since about 1931, the expression "Monday morning quarterback" has been used to describe someone who second guesses, judges and criticizes the decisions made by coaches and players in the previous weekend's games. This began in football but is not limited to football. For many years (1989-2018), Peter King wrote a column in "Sports Illustrated" called "MMQB" in which he did just what it said delightfully.
7. According to the title of the 1972 novel by Harry Kemelman (1908-1996), what did amateur detective Rabbi David Small do on Monday?

Answer: took off

There are twelve volumes in Harry Kemelman's series of novels involving Rabbi David Small, the first seven of which are named for the days of the week. The fourth in this series in "Monday the Rabbi Took Off." Rabbi Small takes a personal trip to Israel and finds himself in the midst of a murderous situation involving US students abroad, Israeli intelligence agents and Arab terrorists. The rabbi is challenged to solve a case outside his normal cultural frame using rabbinical logic.
8. What happened in the US on 28 October 1929 which justified calling the day "Black Monday"?

Answer: the Wall Street Crash

In 1929, the stock markets of the United States did not crash all at once on a single day. The NYSE lost 11% of its value on Black Thursday, 24 October, 12.8% of its value on Black Monday, 28 October, and 11.7% on Black Tuesday, 29 October. The average reached bottom on 14 November and it took the market over twenty years to fully recover. This was a major cause of the Great Depression.
9. In 1986, who sang "It's just another manic Monday / I wish it was Sunday / 'Cause that's my fun day / My I don't have to run day" ?

Answer: The Bangles

"Manic Monday" is a song about a woman who wakes up to the alarm on Monday morning and wishes intensely that it was still Sunday, a day off, when she could return to her dreams. The song was written by Prince under the pseudonym Christopher. He gave the song to the Bangles rhythm guitarist Susanna Hoffs and that group recorded it.
10. After what ancient deity(ies) and/or celestial object(s) was Monday named?

Answer: Luna/the moon

Monday is the Moon's Day. In ancient Latin, it was called "diēs Lūnae" which means the day of the Moon. Luna is the ancient Roman goddess associated with the moon, hence the day's name "Lunedi" in Italian. The Modern English word Monday derives from the Old English "monendag" and "mondag" which are related to the Modern German "Montag."
