Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Magic Kingdom Park opened in 1971, the first theme park of the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. Which Disney Princess has their castle as the centerpiece of this park?

Answer: Cinderella

Although Walt Disney (1901-66) was involved in the planning of the resort, construction did not begin until 1967.

Both the Florida and Tokyo parks have a "Cinderella's Castle". The California, Paris, and Hong Kong parks have "Sleeping Beauty's Castle". The Shanghai park has the "Enchanted Storybook Castle", which features all of the Disney Princesses.
2. Created in 1962, which toasted oat and marbit cereal is "magically delicious"?

Answer: Lucky Charms

John Holahan created Lucky Charms in 1962, starting with the idea to add Circus Peanut candy to cereal.

The original "marbit" (marshmallow bit) pieces were pink hearts, yellow moons, orange stars, and green clovers.

Originally called L.C. Leprechaun, and sometimes called Sir Charms, Lucky the Leprechaun has been the cereal's mascot since 1963. Waldo the Wizard replaced Lucky for a short time in 1975 in some areas.
3. Basketball player Magic Johnson won an NCAA Championship with Michigan State University, five NBA Championships with the LA Lakers, and a gold medal in the 1992 Olympics. What is his first name?

Answer: Earvin

Earvin "Magic" Johnson announced in 1991 that he had tested positive for HIV, and immediately retired. Subsequently, he played in the All-Star game, the Olympics, and made a few comebacks.

Johnson is a successful businessman, and was a minority owner of the LA Lakers from 1994-2010, a part owner of the LA Dodgers starting in 2012, and a part owner of the LA Sparks starting in 2014.
4. The vegetable oils in Magic Shell (Ice Magic in Australia) have a high melting point, making it harden when used on what dessert?

Answer: Ice Cream

The high saturated fat content of certain vegetable oils such as coconut or sunflower oil causes the liquid topping to solidify when it contacts the cold ice cream, forming an edible "shell".

Other similar products may use edible paraffin wax to achieve the same effect, but this ingredient is not part of Magic Shell.

The other choices are all desserts that are set on fire before serving.
5. Magic-user, cleric, and fighting-man were the three character classes in the original 1974 edition of what role playing game?

Answer: Dungeons & Dragons

Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson created the game, which originally assumed knowledge of the "Chainmail" miniature game rules. The box set contained three rulebooks: Men & Magic, Monsters & Treasure, and Underworld & Wilderness Adventures.

"Magic-user" was used until the 1989 release of "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons", when it was dropped for the term "mage".
6. The Syco-Seer was not very successful until Brunswick Billiards commissioned the inventors to re-brand it as what magical fortune telling device?

Answer: 8-Ball

Albert C. Carter created the Syco-Seer in 1944, which is the inner cylinder of the device. In 1948 the product was sold as a crystal ball, but in 1950 the Magic 8-Ball version was produced.

The fortunes are printed on an icosahedral (20-sided) die made of white plastic. The typical responses are 50% positive, 25% neutral, and 25% negative. When the die floats to the top of a cylinder filled with dark liquid, the writing can be seen through an opening in the housing.
7. Invented in 1958, what "magic" device was a feature of cheaper hotels in the latter part of the 20th century?

Answer: Magic Fingers Vibrating Bed

Invented by John Houghtaling (1916-2009), the coin-operated device attached to any bed frame and offered 15 minutes of vibration for 25 cents.

Due to the sleazy connotation and theft of the coin boxes, installation of the Magic Fingers devices declined in the 1980s. However, many television shows and movies referenced the device.
8. Which British Invasion band released both a film and an album of their "Magical Mystery Tour"?

Answer: The Beatles

While the 1967 improvised film was not well received, the album was successful.

Both the film and the album presented format problems. At 52 minutes long, the film was too short for theatrical release. With 11 songs, the album was too long for an EP (Extended Play) record, but too short for an LP (Long Play) record. A double EP was released in the UK, while additional singles were added to make an LP for the US.

The Beatles (1960-1970) consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.
9. In "The Magic School Bus" books and television series, schoolchildren go on fantastic field trips to learn about science and the real world. What is the name of their adventurous teacher?

Answer: Ms. Frizzle

Ms. Valerie Felicity Frizzle, sometimes called "The Friz" by her students, was voiced by Lily Tomlin in the television series. Tomlin won the 1995 Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program for the role.

Along with the teacher and students, Liz, the class pet chameleon, also goes on the adventures.
10. The company Industrial Light & Magic was created in 1975 in order to provide the special effects for which film?

Answer: Star Wars

When George Lucas couldn't find an effects company to work on his 1977 film, he essentially started his own.

In 1979, ILM started its own computer graphics department, which was eventually spun off and became Pixar.
