Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kate Bush song with a ghostly Cathy

Answer: Wuthering Heights

Kate Bush sings about Cathy, begging Heathcliff to let her in through his window. The song appeared on Kate's first album 'The Kick Inside' and reached number one on the UK Singles Chart in 1978. Kate took her inspiration from the Emily Bronte's novel, published in 1847 and telling the story of the doomed love affair between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, the homeless boy brought to their home by her father.
2. 2012 film starring Daniel Radcliffe and Janet McTeer

Answer: The Woman in Black

The film is based on the book of the same name written by Susan Hill and published in 1983. Earlier adaptations include a television film set in the UK which was broadcast in 1989. Set in Edwardian England in the early twentieth century, Radcliffe plays the lead character, a solicitor who visits a spooky village where many of the local children are lured to their deaths by a malevolent spirit. Hammer Films, well known for their horror productions, are among the producers of the film which was successful, although a sequel in 2014 was less well received.
3. Novel published in 2002 and narrated by the ghostly Susie Salmon

Answer: The Lovely Bones

The book is by Alice Sebold and was published in 2002. Set in Pennsylvania, the story is told from the viewpoint of Susie, who has been raped and then murdered at the age of fourteen. She watches her family struggling to accept her death since her body hasn't been discovered.

The story was adapted into a film, directed by Peter Jackson, in 2009 with Saoirse Ronan playing the part of Susie Salmon.
4. Alter ego of Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch

Answer: Ghost Rider

The comic book character Ghost Rider was originally a stunt performer named Johnny Blaze who makes a deal with the devil to save his father. He appeared in Marvel Comics between 1983 and 1990. From 1990 until 1998, Ghost Rider was Danny Ketch, who was the younger brother of Johnny but given to the widowed Mrs Ketch to raise for his own protection meaning neither Ghost Rider is aware of their connection.
5. 1885 composition by Antonin Dvorak

Answer: The Spectre's Bride

'The Spectre's Bride' is a choral work by Dvorak first performed in 1885. The 'bride' of the title is a young woman who is kidnapped by a ghostly figure who she believes to be her dead lover. The story came from a poem written by Karel Erben. Among Dvorak's other works are his Symphony No 9 in E Minor, popularly known as the 'New World' symphony, written during a New York visit of 1893.

His range includes opera, songs, symphonies and chamber work.
6. Ghost believed to haunt Raynham Hall in Norfolk

Answer: The Brown Lady

The Brown Lady is one of the most famous ghosts of England because she was photographed in 1936 during a visit to Raynham Hall by photographers working for the magazine 'Country Life'. They captured an image descending the main staircase. Various rational explanations, mostly to do with double exposure, have been put forward for the 'ghost'. The lady had previously been seen in 1835 and 1836 with the later of these being by the author Frederick Marryat, who wrote 'The Children of the New Forest' (1847). The Brown Lady has been identified as Lady Dorothy Walpole.
7. Where R Dean Taylor found a ghost in 1967

Answer: In My House

R Dean Taylor is a singer whose main success came during the 1960s and 1970s. His hits include 'Indiana Wants Me', which hit the top ten in the USA, UK and other countries in 1970. 'There's a Ghost in My House' was written in 1967 by the prolific Motown song writing team of Holland, Dozier and Holland, with input from the singer, but wasn't initially a hit.

A re-release in 1974 proved more successful, with the song reaching number three on the UK Singles Chart.
8. Phrase created by Gilbert Ryle to describe Cartesian dualism

Answer: The Ghost in the Machine

Named for Rene Descartes, mind-body dualism holds that the mind and the body are separate entities. Gilbert Ryle used the term 'the ghost in the machine' to describe this in a book published in 1949 and called 'The Concept of Mind'. Ryle himself was a philosopher, with his views favouring behaviourism - the idea that humans react to external stimuli.

The phrase 'ghost in the machine' has passed into common usage and has been used by The Police for an album title, for television episodes in numerous series and as book titles, including by Arthur Koestler in 1967.
9. Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer film from 2000

Answer: What Lies Beneath

The film was directed by Robert Zemeckis and features Ford and Pfeiffer as a married couple. Claire (Pfeiffer) begins to notice strange events in their home and believes it is being haunted. To begin with, she suspects her neighbour has been murdered but eventually recalls an affair her husband, a lecturer, had with a student - a memory she had suppressed.

The supernatural happenings allow Claire to uncover the truth.
10. A governess sees ghosts in a novella of 1898

Answer: The Turn of the Screw

Henry James tells the story of a young woman who becomes convinced that her charges, a boy and girl, are being haunted by her predecessor and another former employee. The pair were having an illicit relationship and the new governess is convinced they are dead, returning to the home where they both worked. The story is open to interpretation - one being that the apparitions are all in the governess's mind while others take the events as being real.

The story has been adapted for both film and television on several occasions, with 'The Innocents' (1961) starring Deborah Kerr and Michael Redgrave among them.
