Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Albino animals, like albino humans, lack which pigment that protects them from the sun's ultraviolet rays?

Answer: Melanin

Melanin provides protection against sunburn; both eyes and skin are affected in animals without the ability to produce melanin, meaning they are susceptible to sunburn and photophobia. When an animal lacks the melanin pigment in the skin only but has blue eyes, this indicates a reduced amount of the pigmentation is present and is known as leucism, rather than albinism.

This question was pigmented by Phoenix Rising team member VegemiteKid.
2. What word completes the following axiom, meaning to work hard while there's opportunity? Make ___ while the sun shines.

Answer: Hay

This old saying suggests that it's important not to waste time or be lazy - don't procrastinate. This is especially true for farmers harvesting hay. If the hay is ripe and it's a sunny day, harvest it immediately! Tomorrow it might rain and hay can't be harvested when wet, as it will rot and not be of any use. Harvesting dry hay means a store of food for animals in times of drought or in winter when they are unable to find food outside.

This question was raked in the sun by Phoenix Rising team member VegemiteKid.
3. Empire of the Sun is the preferred historic name of the Japanese people for their island nation.

Answer: False

The phrase "Empire of the Sun" is called an exonym, meaning it is a name applied to a group or nation by those outside rather than a name that comes from within the community. The name, "Empire of the Sun", finds its origins in the kanji characters that form it and the red circle on the country's flag. This phrase was a poetic rendering of the name of Japan from about 1868 to the end of World War II.

The Japanese name for Japan, Nippon or Nihon, is many times translated as "Land of the Rising Sun". They both literally mean "the sun's origin" and are a reference to Japan's position east of Asia and more specifically China. Most of what is known about the name of the country of Japan comes from Chinese Imperial sources.

This question was created by Phoenix Rising team member tazman6619.
4. Americans have a knack of having colorful ways to describe how to cook an egg. If a restaurant customer requests his eggs sunny side up, how does he want them cooked?

Answer: Fried. Cooked on one side, yolk still runny.

'Sunny side up' means to fry on one side until the white is cooked but the yolk remains runny. 'Over easy' means flipped or cooked on both sides ('over') but the yolk also remains runny. 'Over hard' means cooked on both sides until the yolk is hard. 'Scrambled' means that beaten egg is stirred while being cooked in a pan so that it curdles into small lumps. An omelette is also fried beaten egg, but it is not stirred during cooking like the scrambled egg.

This question was cooked up by Phoenix Rising team member 1nn1.
5. Which of the following movies was not based on a novel of the same name?

Answer: A Place in the Sun

"A Place in the Sun" (1951) was based on Theodore Dreiser's 1925 novel "An American Tragedy". It is about a working-class man who is involved with two women: a factory worker, and a socialite. An earlier 1931 film adaptation did use the novel's title.

"Evil Under the Sun" (1982) was based on Agatha Christie's 1941 novel of the same name. In it, Hercule Poirot investigates the murder of a young woman while he is on holiday in Devon.

"Rising Sun" (1993), a crime film based on Michael Crichton's novel of the same name, highlights the differences in Japanese and American cultures during the course of a murder investigation.

Ernest Hemingway's novel "The Sun Also Rises" was twice adapted to films of the same name, once in 1957 and the other in 1984. The story is about a few American and British expatriates who attend a festival in Spain to watch the bullfights.

This question was jointly produced by Phoenix Rising team members 1nn1 and purelyqing.
6. In the lyrics of which song does Neil Diamond proclaim that "you are the sun" and he is the moon?

Answer: Play Me

After witnessing this song at a concert in 2008 and listening to the screams it produced from the "elder" women, Melissa Ruggieri, a journalist for Media General, described it as having "a bizarre aphrodisiac effect". "Play Me" is a baritone ballad whose lyrics have polarized a number of critics and appears on Diamond's 1972 album "Moods". It charted well for the singer, reaching number eleven on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

For those who have forgotten the chorus lyric it goes: "You are the sun/I am the moon/You are the words/I am the tune/Play me".

This question was toyed with and presented by Phoenix Rising team member pollucci19.
7. Who prayed to God to stop the sun to help the Israelites win their battle against five armies?

Answer: Joshua

Chapter Ten of the Book of Joshua describes the Israelites entering the Promised Land and being attacked by five armies laying siege to the Gibeonites. Joshua (10:12) tells of Joshua, having promised to protect the Gibeonites, beseeching the Lord for assistance. He then proclaims "Sun, stand still upon Gibeon; and you, Moon, in the valley of Ayalon". Joshua then proceeds to lead his people to victory against the five armies.

Phoenix Rising team member pollucci19 eclipsed himself with this question.
8. How big is the sun? So big that you could fit over one million Earths inside of it.

Answer: True

In fact, you can fit 1.3 million Earths inside the sun. Its volume is 1.4 x 10^27 cubic metres. It is (almost) a perfect sphere and has a diameter of 864,938 miles (1.392 million km). Pretty impressive? Nah, not really. In comparison to other stars in the universe, it is just "average". Betelgeuse, for example, is a red giant (ours is a yellow dwarf) that is 700 times bigger than our sun and it's also about 14,000 times brighter.

This question flared up from the pen of Phoenix Rising team member pollucci19.
9. Formed in 2011, what sport do the Gold Coast Suns play?

Answer: Australian Rules

The establishment of a second team in Queensland was mooted in 2008, and saw fruition in the 2011 season. After a bye in the first round, they played their first game in Round 2, against Carlton, and got trounced. They had their first win in Round 5 of the same season, pipping Port Adelaide by three points.Their first captain was star recruit Gary Ablett, Jr, who joined from Geelong.

This question was created by Phoenix Rising team member ozzz2002.
10. Our sun is a G dwarf star. Which one of the following models of car is *NOT* named after a star(s)?

Answer: Mercury Comet

The name Mercury Comet contains two types of celestial bodies, a planet (closest to the sun) and a meteor-like body, but no star.

Taurus is a constellation.
Vega is the brightest star in the constellation of Lyra.
Subaru is a Japanese word for Pleiades (cluster of six stars in constellation Taurus) (Think of the Subaru logo).
