Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A jeweled copy of the "The Rubaiyat" by which famous Persian mathematician and astronomer was lost in the early part of the 20th century?

Answer: Omar Kayyam

This incredible book contained over 1,500 precious stones set in gold. At the time it was lost it was valued at almost $2,000.00. This was at a time when the average yearly wage in the U.S. was $100.00 a year. While the author was a noted scientist, this book was a collection of his poetry.
2. When the richest man in the world was lost in the Atlantic Ocean, it was news all over the world. What happened to his wife?

Answer: She gave birth to his son four months later.

John Jacob Astor was believed to be the richest man in the world when he went down with the Titanic. His pregnant wife survived and gave birth to his son four months later. A son from his previous marriage publicly refused to accept his brother as a true Astor.

While the elder Astor was lost in the sinking, his corpse was found floating in the water a week later and he was buried in the family plot at Trinity Church Cemetery in New York City.
3. A few years before the outbreak of World War I, about 400 tons of coal were lost in the North Atlantic. What was so strange about this lost coal?

Answer: It was recovered over 80 years later.

This coal was aboard the Titanic and was recovered over 80 years later. These pieces are the only objects from the Titanic that can be bought on the open market, and prices have ranged from $25.00-$150.00. They can be sold because they are not considered "artifacts". To meet the criteria of an artifact the object must be man-made.
4. In the 1958 movie "A Night to Remember", Harold Goldblatt portrayed which wealthy young heir who was lost in a maritime accident?

Answer: Benjamin Guggenheim

Benjamin Guggenheim's father was Meyer Guggenheim who had become one of the world's richest men. His money had been made in mining and smelting. Benjamin Guggenheim's body was never recovered and was lost forever.
5. Monet's fabulous painting "Water Lilies" was lost in transit, while on loan to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Answer: False

There are multiple errors in this question. Claude Monet did a series of over 200 paintings in his "Water Lilies" collection. Many people believe it is one painting. None of the paintings have been lost. Also, the Metropolitan Museum of Art owns and displays some of these paintings.

The idea that one or some of these paintings were lost comes from the movie "Titanic" which showed the main character "Rose" to have a collection of famous paintings which were lost when the ship sank.
6. Which one of Picasso's paintings was rumored to have been lost, never to be found, while in transit from London to New York City?

Answer: Les Demoiselles d'Avignon

A popular urban myth purports that "Les Demoiselles d'Avignonis" was aboard the Titanic when it sank. This is completely false. The movie "Titanic" added fuel to this myth when it portrayed that painting in the movie. The real painting is on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
7. The cursed Egyptian mummy of Princess Amen-Ra was lost during transport to America while being transported to the U.S. on the Hindenburg.

Answer: False

This cursed mummy is complete myth. There was no such mummy and therefore no curse. It is just another urban myth related to the sinking of the Titanic, not the Hindenburg. In reality many things were salvaged from the Hindenburg including mail! The things of value on the Titanic are gone forever.
8. Which ship, famous for saving the lives of over 700 people, was itself lost at sea after being torpedoed of the coast of Ireland by the German submarine?

Answer: The Carpathia

The RMS Carpathia was the ship responsible for saving 705 survivors of the sinking of the Titanic. Sadly, 6 years later, when it was lost at sea, only 57 crew and passengers survived. This wonderful ship has largely been forgotten by history books and the passage of time.
9. What was the name of the fictional blue diamond that urban legend says was lost at sea?

Answer: Coeur de la Mer

The Jewel of the Ocean, also called Couer de la Mer, is a fictional jewel that was based on the Hope Diamond. It was portrayed in the movie "Titanic" as being real. Due to the popularity of the movie, the jewelry company Asprey and Garrard made a real Heart of the Ocean diamond necklace.

The center stone is a 170 carat sapphire, not a blue diamond. Singer Celine Dion was seen wearing it during her performance of her song "My Heart Will Go On" at the 1998 Academy Awards Ceremony. Later, during a benefit auction, the necklace was sold to a private owner for over $2 million.

While the Couer de la Mer is fictional, all the other choices are real blue diamonds.
10. The loss of these objects and people occurred in one incident. One word brings all these losses together. What is that word?

Answer: Titanic

All these things were lost when the British luxury liner Titanic hit an ice berg and sank in 1912. The loss of life was much greater than any loss of money or art. The movie "Titanic" (1997) has caused the proliferation of misinformation about the sinking and given support to many urban myths.

The only major artwork lost for sure was the "The Rubaiyat". There were many other famous and/or wealthy people about this luxury liner, but there were many more average people sailing towards what they were hoping was a new life in a new world.

The last survivor of the sinking of the Titanic died in 2009.
