Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. ANIMALS: 'lovebirds' is a word for a happy couple, but there is an actual type of bird called the lovebird. In which continent would you find it?

Answer: Africa

Lovebirds are actually a type of small parrot, usually green in colour, although several subspecies have pink/red or grey patches or markings on their heads and faces. They get their name because of the strong monogamous bond between male and female pairs, who often sit together for long periods.

They are native to Africa, with some species being native to specific countries (such as Madagascar's grey-headed lovebird, or Ethiopia and Eritrea's black-winged lovebird). Colonies of feral peach-faced lovebirds also live in Phoenix, Arizona. Lovebirds can be kept as pets, but need plenty of socialisation and toys to keep them occupied, or it affects their mental health. Black-collared lovebirds have a very specific diet of native figs which can only be found in their home territory of Equatorial Africa.
2. BRAIN TEASERS: 'sore' is an anagram of which type of love?

Answer: eros

According to ancient Greek philosophy, there are several different types of love, and one of these is 'eros', which means sexual/sensual love or desire. Erotic love was thought to be a type of madness sent by the gods in the form of arrows shot by Eros, the god of love (Cupid to the Romans).

Other types of love include storge (affectionate love), agape (unconditional love or, according to the Christian interpretation, G-d's and Jesus' love for humanity), philia (brotherly love), philautia (self-love) and mania (obsessive love). CS Lewis wrote in 'The Four Loves' that agape, storge, eros and philia are the four main types of love found in the Bible.
3. CELEBRITIES: Courtney Love is the lead singer of Hole, widow of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain and sometime actress. What is her real surname?

Answer: Harrison

Courtney Love was born Courtney Michelle Harrison - though some sources claim her birth name is Love Michelle Harrison - on 9th July 1964. Hank Harrison, Love's father and a former roadie with the Grateful Dead, claimed that 'Courtney Love' was his daughter's stage name when she was stripping.

In and out of trouble after her parents divorced, Love was emancipated from her mother Linda in 1970 and travelled all over the world, spending time in Liverpool - where she hung out with members of Echo and the Bunnymen, and the Teardrop Explodes - and Japan.

After acting in a couple of films, she formed Hole in 1989. She and Kurt Cobain were married in Hawaii in 1992; the couple were both heroin users, and Love was criticised for using drugs while pregnant with daughter Frances Bean. 'Live Through This', Hole's second album, was released a week after Cobain's death in 1994. Love had a brief solo career before reforming Hole in 2009, albeit without guitarist and founding member Eric Erlandson. As well as acting and music, she has also dabbled in fashion and art.
4. ENTERTAINMENT: which fashion designer's range of fragrances include an eau de toilette called Daisy Love?

Answer: Marc Jacobs

Daisy Love is one of the fragrances in Marc Jacobs' Daisy range. It has a distinctive bottle with a cap shaped like a daisy, and a pinkish colour. Jacobs describes the archetypal 'Daisy girl' as being simultaneously timeless and young at heart, and was inspired by daisies because they are 'friendly' flowers, as opposed to being 'precious' or 'exotic'. Daisy Love was released in 2018, and its three different fragrance notes of Daisy Love are driftwood and musk (base, the scent that lingers), daisy petals (heart, the 'essence' of the fragrance) and cloudberries (top, the initial scent).

Other fragrances in the Daisy range include Daisy Dream and Daisy Eau So Fresh.
5. FOR CHILDREN: who wrote 'Guess How Much I Love You'?

Answer: Sam McBratney

The Northern Irish writer Sam McBratney, who died in 2020, wrote 'Guess How Much I Love You', while Anita Jeram provided the illustrations. The book was released in 1994 in the UK and 1995 in the US, and has been translated into over 50 languages and sold over 43 million copies worldwide.

In 1996, it was made a Notable Children's Book by the American Library Association. Like many beloved picture books for kids, it's simple, yet effective: it tells the story of two hares, Big Nutbrown Hare and Little Nutbrown Hare (who are father and son in the TV version), who tell each other how much they love each other in response to the question 'guess how much I love you?' The book was made into an animated TV series in 2010.
6. GENERAL: according to an old English Halloween tradition, if you peel a certain fruit in one piece and throw the peel over your shoulder, it will reveal your true love's initials. Which fruit is this?

Answer: Apple

If you peel an apple, taking care to ensure that the peel stays in one piece, and throw it over your shoulder, superstition says it will reveal your true love's initials. Other apple/love-related superstitions include eating an apple in front of a mirror by candlelight (your true love is supposed to appear behind you), sticking pins in a golden apple, tying a garter around it and sleeping with it under your pillow, and naming two apple seeds after yourself and your partner and throwing them into a fire to see if they will propose (if the seeds fly apart or burn together, it's a no, but if they both fly off to the same side, it's a yes). Apples and Halloween go pretty well together due to apples being autumnal fruits; one popular Halloween tradition is bobbing (or 'dooking' if you're Scottish) for apples, where apples are placed in a container of water and people have to try and grab them in their teeth, without using their hands.
7. GEOGRAPHY: in which Asian country would you find the Love River?

Answer: Taiwan

Yes, the Love River is a real river! It's in Kaohsiung City in southern Taiwan, and is a popular tourist destination, with riverboat tours and gondola rides, sites nearby such as the Holy Rosary Cathedral, and cafes along its banks. It was originally known as the Kaohsiung River (and Takao River in the local indigenous peoples' language), but had its name changed officially in 1972; reasons suggested for the name change include the story of a young couple drowning themselves in the river, and a sign for a local business being damaged, with only the characters for 'Love River' left intact. On the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, it is the site for the local Dragon Boat Festival, where the locals hold boat races and eat zongzi (stuffed rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves).
8. HISTORY: in which year did the original 'Summer of Love' occur in the USA?

Answer: 1967

The social phenomenon known as the 'Summer of Love' happened in the summer of 1967, at the zenith of the hippy scene, when hundreds of people gathered in Haight-Ashbury - the home of a burgeoning counterculture - in San Francisco. Journalist Hunter S Thompson dubbed the area 'Hashbury' due to the popularity of marijuana among hippies. Anti-war marches took place to protest the Vietnam War, and elsewhere in California, artists such as Janis Joplin, the Byrds and Jimi Hendrix played at the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967. Scott Mackenzie's 'San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)', written by John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas, became the unofficial anthem of the period.

In the UK, a similar period known as the 'Second Summer of Love' occurred in the UK between 1988 and 1989, associated with acid house music, Ecstasy, psychedelic visuals, and illegal raves.
9. HOBBIES: in hanakotoba, the Japanese language of flowers, which of these flowers represents love?

Answer: Carnation

In many cultures, the red rose is the flower most associated with love, but in hanakotoba, a way of conveying meaning and feelings through flowers in Japan, the red carnation is also associated with love (yellow carnations, on the other hand, represent rejection). Red carnations are a common gift for Mothers' Day. Red camellias are another flower associated with love. Red spider lilies, incidentally, are associated with death, so it's probably not a good idea to give them as a Valentine's Day present! The death link is because they were historically planted outside graveyards to keep animals away.

The daffodil, meanwhile, represents respect and the peony represents bravery.
10. HUMANITIES: many polytheistic religions have a god or goddess of love. Which of these goddesses is a Yoruba goddess (or orisha) of love?

Answer: Oshun

Oshun is the Yoruba goddess of love, fertility, beauty and diplomacy, and is associated with the Osun River in Nigeria. In Yoruba myth, she was one of the three wives of the god Shango, who was also the third Alaafin (Emperor) of the Oyo kingdom, an ancient Yoruba empire in what is now Benin and western Nigeria.

She fell in love with him at a festival and was sent to help him create the world, and Shango insisted that the other gods respect her. She is also thought to be the first Iyalode, a female Yoruba chieftain.

The sacred grove of Osun-Osogbo on the banks of the Osun River is a shrine for Oshun, and the Osun-Osogbo festival is celebrated there every August. She is also worshipped by Candomblé practitioners in Brazil; she is also associated with rivers and waterfalls there, and her symbol is an abèbè, a ceremonial fan.

As for the other answers, who are also goddesses of love, Lada is a Slavic goddess, Astghik or Astłik was an ancient Armenian goddess, and Qetesh was a Canaanite goddess worshipped in ancient Egypt.
11. LITERATURE: love and romance featured heavily in several of the plays of William Shakespeare, both comic and tragic. Which of these Shakespearean couples is INCORRECTLY matched with the play they appear in?

Answer: Claudio and Hero - 'As You Like It'

Bassanio is a friend of Antonio, the titular Merchant, and Portia is a rich heiress from Belmont, who he later marries. Sebastian is the twin brother of Viola, a shipwrecked woman who crossdresses as a page called Cesario, and Olivia is a countess who falls in love with Sebastian, mistaking him for Cesario (though it all gets sorted in the end). Lysander and Hermia are a Greek couple who get caught up in the fairies' romantic shenanigans. Claudio, a count, and Hero, a governor's daughter, are a Shakespearean couple, but they appear in 'Much Ado About Nothing', along with Hero's cousin Beatrice and Claudio's mate Benedick, who have a love-hate relationship (and some funny dialogue too).

Some of Shakespeare's less happy couples include Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, Othello and Desdemona, Antony and Cleopatra, and - most famous of all, those doomed Italian teens, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet.
12. MOVIES: which 1970 movie, starring Ali McGraw and Ryan O'Neal, had the tagline 'love means never having to say you're sorry'?

Answer: Love Story

There are a few films called 'Love Story', but this one is probably the most famous. Based on the book by Erich Segal, it tells the story of Oliver Barrett IV (O'Neal), a rich Harvard student, and Jenny Cavalleri (McGraw), a working-class student at Radcliffe College. Oliver's parents look down on Jenny and threaten to cut him off if he marries her, and when the couple are married, Jenny takes a teaching job to help support Oliver through university. Jenny has terminal cancer, which Oliver tries to keep secret until she finds out from her doctor, and Oliver gets his father to write him a cheque for Jenny's cancer treatment. Oliver spends Jenny's final moments with her and meets his father outside the hospital, and it is at this point that he says the famous line.
13. MUSIC: which singer once claimed in 'The Joker' that some people called him the 'gangster of love', and that he spoke of the 'pompatus of love'?

Answer: Steve Miller

'The Joker' was released by the Steve Miller Band in 1973 and comes from the album of the same name. It was re-released in the UK in 1990, when it was used in an advert for Levi's jeans, and became a UK Singles Chart Number One. Along with 'Enter Maurice', 'The Joker' is one of two songs by the Steve Miller Band to feature the phrase 'pompatus of love'.

But what exactly is a pompatus? Miller is thought to have gotten the word 'pompatus' from 'The Letter', a song by the Medallions; Vernon Green, who wrote the song, said that a pompatus was "a secret paper-doll fantasy figure who would be my everything and bear my children". Miller, meanwhile, claimed the word could mean whatever the listener wanted it to mean.

In the 'Oxford English Dictionary', 'pompatus' means 'to act with love and splendour'.
14. PEOPLE: which murderous cult leader was also a budding musician and released an album called 'Lie: The Love and Terror Cult'?

Answer: Charles Manson

Not only did the patriarch of the Manson Family provide inspiration for musicians such as Space, Marilyn Manson and Kasabian, but he was a musician himself. The Beach Boys covered one of his songs - drummer Dennis Wilson had a brief friendship with him, while Brian Wilson lent Manson the use of his studio - which was originally titled 'Cease to Exist', but reworked as 'Never Learn Not to Love' on the 1969 album '20/20'. Several members of the Manson family moved into Brian's home and later stole his possessions and vandalised his cars. Understandably, Dennis Wilson later distanced himself from Manson, who showed him a bullet and threatened to kill his children. 'Lie: The Love and Terror Cult' was released in 1970, but sold a measly 300 copies.

While in prison, Manson continued to record music on tape recorders. He died in November 2017.
15. RELIGION: which book of the New Testament features the line 'love is patient, love is kind'?

Answer: 1 Corinthians

To be exact, it's 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. The full version (from the New International Version of the Bible) is as follows: "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away." Fans of the Hulu series 'The Handmaid's Tale' may recall that the teenage Econowife Eden Blaine recited it when she was about to be executed by drowning for having an affair, although she was killed before she could finish the whole passage. 1 Corinthians is one of the Epistles of St Paul.
16. SCI/TECH: which hormone is known as the 'love hormone'?

Answer: Oxytocin

Oxytocin is produced in the hypothalamus gland and released into the bloodstream from the posterior pituitary gland, and is known as the 'love hormone' because it is released during sex, and is also thought to increase empathy and trust, although some scientists debate this.

It is also released during labour and breastfeeding and helps encourage the mother-child bond. A 2012 study entitled 'Oxytocin during the initial stages of romantic attachment: Relations to couples' interactive reciprocity' by Inna Schneiderman, Orna Zagoory-Sharon, James Leckman and Ruth Feldman revealed that oxytocin levels were higher in couples during the early stages of a relationship.
17. SPORT: in which sport is 'love' a type of score?

Answer: Tennis

In tennis, a score of 'love' means no points, e.g. 'sixty-love' means one player has sixty points and the other has none. Funnily enough, 'love' in the context of tennis has nothing to do with the emotion of love; a popular theory is that it comes 'l'oeuf', a French term meaning 'the egg', as a zero is shaped like an egg.

Another suggestion is that the player who has no points is carrying on out of 'love' for the game, while a similar theory is that it comes from 'lof doen', a Dutch word for 'honour', in that the losing player is playing for the sake of honour.

The term first came into use in the late 1800s.
18. TELEVISION: the British reality/dating show 'Love Island' originally started out as a celebrity series, with two series of 'Celebrity Love Island' being filmed in 2005 and 2006. Which two celebrities won the 2006 series? (Hint: they are both related to footballers.)

Answer: Calum Best and Bianca Gascoigne

'Love Island' was rebranded as a 'Big Brother'-style reality TV series in which twelve contestants are taken to an exotic location, such as Mallorca (for the summer series), South Africa (for the winter series) or Fiji (for the celebrity series), and encouraged to get together. Viewers can vote contestants off the island; contestants who do not pair up are also eliminated. As with 'Big Brother', the contestants are also given various games and challenges to play. A special section of the villa is available for couples to spend time away from the rest of the group. The series is not without its controversy; two contestants, Sophie Gradon and Mark Thalassitis, killed themselves after appearing on the show - Gradon had been subjected to harassment by trolls before her death - while Caroline Flack, one of its presenters, committed suicide in 2020, a year after leaving the show. Other contestants were also the victims of trolling campaigns and revenge porn. It has also been criticised for the controlling behaviour of some of the male contestants, and for the lack of diversity, both ethnic and in terms of the contestant's appearances.

Calum Best is the son of Manchester United legend George Best, while Bianca Gascoigne is the stepdaughter of Paul 'Gazza' Gascoigne, formerly of Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio and Rangers. Both Gascoigne and Best are models.
19. VIDEO GAMES: 'Hatoful Boyfriend' is a romance-themed game with a difference. What do the male love interests all have in common?

Answer: They are all birds.

Yes, 'Hatoful Boyfriend' is possibly the only dating sim where you get to romance birds! The female protagonist lives in a post-apocalyptic society where birds rule the world and human populations have massively decreased as the result of a strain of bird flu.

The birds are also sapient, with personalities and intelligence, and the protagonist attends a high school for birds. The title is a pun on 'hurtful' and 'hato', the Japanese word for 'pigeon'. It was created by PigeoNation and originally released as a free demo in Japan in 2011, before an official release later that year.

The love interests include Ryota, a rock dove; Nageki, a shy mourning dove; Shuu, the creepy school doctor and a Chukar partridge; and Okosan, an athletic fantail dove obsessed with pudding.
20. WORLD: you'll probably have heard of Valentine's Day, but which country has its own version, Dydd Santes Dwynwen, which is celebrated on 25th January?

Answer: Wales

Dydd Santes Dwynwen, or St Dwynwen's Day, is the Welsh counterpart of St Valentine's Day and is celebrated on 25th January. St Dwynwen is the Welsh patron saint of lovers. According to one legend, a man called Maelon fell in love with her, but she rejected him and prayed for help. An angel gave her a potion and when Maelon drank it, he turned into ice. St Dwynwen made three wishes: for Maelon to be brought back to life, for her to never marry, and for G-d to watch over all lovers.

Her church became a popular pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages; the fish swimming in its holy well were thought to predict lovers' destinies with their movements. On St Dwynwen's Day, it is customary to give your partner a love spoon, a decorative wooden spoon carved with intricate designs.
