Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Marvel or DC?

Are you allowed to like them both? What is now Marvel Comics began in the late 1930s as Timely Comics and it has brought a long list of iconic characters into mainstream popular culture including Iron Man (Tony Stark), Hulk (Bruce Banner) and Spider-Man (Peter Parker). The 1930s also saw the rise of DC Comics, which takes its name from one of their early publications, 'Detective Comics'. Some of the most well-known DC characters include Batman (Bruce Wayne), Superman (Clark Kent) and Wonder Woman (Diana Prince).

The image has a few clues that code it as being from the world of comic books including black lines (representing motion), a muted colour palette (indicating sadness or melancholy) and a cape (placing us in superhero territory). Whilst there is crossover between comic books, manga and anime, this image has a very different visual language to that seen in films such as 'Spirited Away' and 'My Neighbor Totoro'.
2. Cartier or Bulgari?

The image features a heart-cut emerald set in a gold band but I would hope that jewellers such as Cartier and Bulgari wouldn't dream of selling such an object with a heartbreaking crack down the middle of the gem!

Cartier was founded by Louis-Francois Cartier in Paris in the late 1840s. One of its most famous pieces of jewellery is the Bismarck Sapphire Necklace, a striking blue Burmese sapphire pendant with platinum chain linked together by diamonds. Bulgari is an Italian jeweller that was founded in 1884. The company is known not only for its jewellery but also wristwatches (Octo, Serpenti and LVCEA, amongst others).
3. 'The Third Man' or 'Strangers on a Train'?

Film noir is a visually striking genre of film that, as noir (French for 'black') suggests, can be readily identified by black and white visuals that celebrate light and shadow. Films of this genre usually feature a cynical detective or an amateur investigator who stumbles upon a mysterious situation or a puzzling disappearance. Film noir was at its height in the 1940s and 1950s and two of the best examples of the genre are Carol Reed's 'The Third Man' (1949) and Alfred Hitchcock's 'Strangers on a Train' (1951).

'The Third Man' is based on a novel of the same name by Graham Greene and follows a writer named Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) who investigates the apparent death of his friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles) only to find that not all is as it seems. The film is particularly famous for its scenes filmed across Vienna, including the sewers. Who is this mysterious third man?

'Strangers on a Train' is also adapted from a novel, in this case by American novelist, Patricia Highsmith. The film - laden with subtext, as is often the case with Hitchcock - observes Guy Haines (Farley Granger) and Bruno Antony (Robert Walker) theorising about how to execute the "perfect murder"; suspense builds as theory becomes a little bit more real than Haines could ever have anticipated.
4. Atari or Nintendo?

The golden age of arcade games took place during the 1970s and 1980s and the era gave rise to games and characters that still inspire new games to this day. Two big names in the arcade game industry were Atari (USA) and Nintendo (Japan) with the former known for hits such as 'Pong' (1972) and 'Breakout' (1976) and the latter responsible for games including 'Mario Bros.' (1983) and 'Donkey Kong' (1981).

The heart is a commonly used symbol in gaming to represent either a life (discrete number of attempts at the game) or health (a continuous range of values where zero often represents the dreaded "game over").
5. Neuhaus or Godiva?

Both Neuhaus and Godiva are chocolatiers that originated in the Belgian capital, Brussels. Neuhaus, founded in 1857, is the older of the two chocolatiers and had its curious beginnings as an apothecary where the medicines were coated in chocolate in order to make consumption somewhat more pleasant (who needs Mary Poppins and her spoonful of sugar). Peculiar origins aside, Neuhaus initially specialised in pralines but over time increased its range to include all of the wonderful varieties of chocolate that a modern consumer has come to know and love.

Godiva was founded nearly 70 years later in 1926 (though the company didn't take the name Godiva until a few decades later) and they also initially focussed on the creation of pralines.
6. Dior J'adore or Chanel No. 5?

Competition in the perfume market is fierce but there are a number of fragrances that have managed to become industry mainstays.

J'adore by Dior was initially released in 1999 and has been marketed by celebrities such as Charlize Theron and Rihanna. The perfume has been reformulated since, most notably in 2023 when perfumer Francis Kurkdjian simplified the ingredients list. Chanel No. 5 is an elegant offering first released in 1921, with the fragrance being contained in a simple, stylish bottle. It must be doing something right to still be going strong more than a century later!
7. 'Notting Hill' or 'Love Actually'?

Who can resist a British rom-com? 'Notting Hill' (1999) is one of the genre's greatest offerings. Iconic scenes including Will Thacker (Hugh Grant) and Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) initially meeting in a London bookshop, Will masquerading as a journalist for 'Horse & Hound' magazine just to be close to his love interest and the "walk through the seasons" montage representing separation, heartache and the passing of time make this film one of the best in class.

'Love Actually' (2003) is a Christmas classic and is renowned for its ensemble cast including Hugh Grant (there he is again!), Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Keira Knightley and Alan Rickman amongst many notable others. It is Christmas in London and the prime minister (Hugh Grant) falls for Natalie (Martine McCutcheon), a member of staff at 10 Downing Street. Alongside this, many other storylines play out and ultimately all intersect.
8. Penderyn or Macallan?

Whatever the question, whisky is the answer! This spirit is produced in casks through the fermentation of grains (often malted) such as barley or rye. The casks used can be made from different types of wood (though typically oak) and they may previously have been used to create other alcoholic beverages such as sherry, port or red wine. The choice of grain, water source and cask as well as the time spent aging (usually 10 to 18 years) all impact the end flavour profile.

Macallan - founded in the 1820s in the Moray region - is a famous Scottish distillery that produces some of the most desirable whisky in the world (it has the price tag to match). Penderyn is a Welsh distillery that was founded much more recently (2000) and is known for its collectable range, Icons of Wales.
9. Ringling Bros. or Cirque du Soleil?

A trip to the circus could cheer anyone up, except perhaps those with a fear of clowns or heights or dangerous creatures or fire or any number of other things frankly! Circuses are commonplace but some of the leading examples over the decades come from the American company, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and the Canadian entertainers, Cirque du Soleil.

Ringling Bros. was established in the 1870s and has the tagline 'The Greatest Show on Earth', an advertising pitch that gave its name to the rather tedious 1953 Best Picture Oscar-winning film starring Jimmy Stewart. Ringling Bros. is associated with all of the traditional attractions that one associates with the circus whereas Cirque du Soleil, established in 1984, takes a much more contemporary approach, using circus skills as performance art and storytelling.
10. 'Spirited Away' or 'My Neighbor Totoro'?

Studio Ghibli are arguably the most globally famous film studio that specialises in the anime genre. Based in Japan, the animation studio has created some fantastic films that appeal to children and adults alike including the renowned 'Spirited Away' (2001) and 'My Neighbor Totoro' (1988).

'My Neighbor Totoro' was the second film released by Studio Ghibli after 'Castle in the Sky' (1986). It is a story of two sisters that, whilst experiencing a new life in the countryside, meet a spirit (Totoro) who becomes their rural guardian. 'Spirited Away' also utilises spirits - a deferential nod to Shinto - this time in a strange world where over-indulgent spirits are in need of rescue from the witch, Yubaba; our young hero, Chihiro, is faced with the task.

There are numerous features that help define the visual language unique to anime and one such feature is the use of abstract backgrounds, often including vibrantly saturated symbols such as hearts and rainbows; a clear blue sky is also a mainstay of the art form. The clouds in this picture have a distinct Japanese vibe which also helps code the image as anime.
11. Cedar Point or Disneyland?

Dodgems, or bumper cars, are a frequent feature at funfairs and theme parks; the attraction gives fairgoers a chance to drive around in electric vehicles - protected by a rubber bumper - and nudge other vehicles on the circuit.

Disneyland once offered a dodgem experience at the Disney California Adventure called Tuck & Roll's Drive 'Em Buggies with bumper cars inspired by the characters from 'A Bug's Life' (1998). Cedar Point (Sandusky, Ohio) has the Joe Cool's Dodgem School attraction to teach youngsters how to drive a dodgem, as well as how to execute a little bit of safe bumping!
12. The Venetian or Bellagio?

It is not enough to simply decide to visit Las Vegas, a hotel and casino in which to spend your chips (okay, okay, money) also needs to be selected. Two well-known options are The Venetian and Bellagio, both of which are located on the Las Vegas Strip. The Venetian is unsurprisingly inspired by the majestic architecture of Venice, Italy; the resort sports a replica Rialto Bridge, indoor canals and outdoor gondola rides. The Bellagio on the other hand is known for its fountains, conservatory and botanical gardens.

It is interesting to note that chip colours aren't necessarily regulated in all jurisdictions which means that the monetary value assigned to a certain colour of chip may differ across different establishments and locations.
