Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the reason that marijuana was outlawed?

Answer: Cotton growers saw hemp as a dangerous competitor

At the time, the Cotton Growers Association was a powerful lobbying group in Washington, so they got a bill outlawing hemp through Congress without much of a hassle.
2. One strange legend contends that people often eat as many as 8 of what when they sleep?

Answer: spiders

I will never again sleep with my mouth open.
3. In 1947, a freight ship carrying fertilizer blew up in a harbor. The shock wave from that explosion caused a fertilizer plant to blow up, and the shock wave from that explosion caused an oil refinery to blow up. The combined force of the explosions was greater than that of an atomic bomb. In what US city did this take place?

Answer: Texas City, Texas

The dead were found as far as three miles from where they were when the explosions occurred.
4. In the Iran-Contra deal, the CIA needed weapons and ammunition from a source that could not be traced. What group did they contact to make these weapons?

Answer: Hell's Angels

The CIA commissioned the Hell's Angels to make at least some of the parts, paying them with drugs. Don't you love the CIA? Quiet, they're watching you right now.
5. Homer (the Greek poet, not the Simpson) now a days could swing by social services and pick up a disability check. Why?

Answer: He was blind.

Which just leads to the question how did he write the Iliad and the Odyssey?
6. In which US state does the law say you can be hanged if you are caught cattle rustling? Rustling means stealing for you city dwellers. (In practice, the law is not applied and people are not really executed for rustling).

Answer: Texas

We just like to kill people in Texas, apparently. If we could bring back the days of lynch mobs and county courthouse hangings we probably would.
7. What was the first and only recreational sport ever played on the moon?

Answer: Golf

Alan Shepard lined up with a sand wedge with 28,045,000 yards to the pin and he sliced the ball.
8. How many gospels are there describing the life and times of Jesus Christ?

Answer: 35 or more

Only four were recognized at the time the Bible was compiled in the 2nd century. However, 35 have turned up over time with more probably lost to time or yet to be discovered.
9. In the farmer's almanac, what is the preferred method of getting rid of slugs?

Answer: Set out a pan of beer in the field or garden

True, salt and pesticide will work, but they could damage the crops. Slugs are attracted to beer. They drink until they pass out drunk in the pan and drown. I can't think of a better way to go.
10. Pericles was one of the greatest rulers Ancient Greece ever had. One odd thing about him is that all the statues depicting him show him wearing a helmet on his head. Why is this?

Answer: He had a deformed head

Apparently, Pericles head was deformed during birth. The best way to describe it is that Pericles was the first conehead.
