Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which member of The Monkees was an heir to a fortune because his mother created "Liquid Paper" correction fluid?

Answer: Michael Nesmith

"The Monkees" were a fictional musical act created for a 1966 - 1968 television show, that became a real band. Their popular songs include "Last Train to Clarksville", "Daydream Believer", and "I'm a Believer".

Inspired by painting, Bette Nesmith Graham (1924 - 1980) created the first correction fluid in 1956.
2. Who is the hero of the "Monkey Island" series of pirate-themed video games?

Answer: Guybrush Threepwood

Beginning in 1990's "The Secret of Monkey Island", Guybrush Threepwood decides to be a pirate, woos Elaine Marley, and stops the plans of the undead pirate LeChuck. The games rely on fun and (sometimes absurdist) humor, and are considered "player-friendly": while players may get frustrated, it is difficult to "die" or lose the game.

According to series creator Ron Gilbert, the true secret of Monkey Island has never been revealed.
3. "Barrel of Monkeys" is a game of picking up plastic monkeys. What was the original name of the game?

Answer: Chimp to Chimp

In 1961, salesman Leonard Marks came up with the idea and teamed up with toy creator Milton Dinhofer to create the product. They came up with 12 plastic monkeys in a flat package. The product was picked up by Lakeside Toys, who released the game with a new name and a cardboard tube package in 1965. A plastic barrel was added soon after.
4. The red mouth of a traditional sock monkey comes from the red heel of an "original Rockford" sock. What is the origin of the "Rockford" sock?

Answer: first made in Rockford, Illinois

John Nelson formed the the Nelson Knitting Company in 1880, located in Rockford, Illinois. The company eventually created a new machine that knit socks without seams in the heel, saving time and labor. These new seamless socks were so popular that other companies imitated them.

In 1932, the company changed the heel to red as a way to identify them as "original Rockfords". In the 1950s there was a patent dispute about sock monkeys, and the patent was eventually transferred to the Nelson Knitting Company.
5. The 1995 science fiction film "12 Monkeys" was inspired by which French short film?

Answer: La Jetée

"La Jetée" (1962) is a French short film made up of primarily of still photos (due to the very limited budget) from creator Chris Marker. It involves a post-apocalyptic world that uses time travel to try to save itself.

The 1995 film "12 Monkeys" directed by Terry Gilliam expands the story into a full length feature film, but maintains many of the core elements of a time traveler attempting to alter events to save his world.
6. The Winged Monkeys of L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" obeyed the Wicked Witch of the West because she used which item to control them?

Answer: Golden Cap

L. Frank Baum's (1856 - 1919) book "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" (1900) was the first of 14 books he wrote on the Land of Oz. It features Dorothy Gale of Kansas, who ends up in Oz and must defeat the Wicked Witch of the West to return home.

The Winged Monkeys are cursed to obey the owner of the Golden Cap three times using a chant engraved on the inside of the cap. The Wicked Witch of the West had already used the cap to conquer the Winkies of the West and to defeat the Wizard of Oz. She used her last command to have the Winged Monkeys attack and capture Dorothy and her companions.
7. Monkey wrenches are adjustable tools. Because they were supplied in tool kits that shipped with Model A and Model T cars, what other name is used for a monkey wrench?

Answer: Ford wrench

In this case, the term "monkey" uses the nautical definition of something adjusted or put together for quick or temporary use, owing to the adjustable nature of the tool. A pipe wrench is a similar tool, and is often called a monkey wrench.
8. Rafiki is the name of the monkey shaman and advisor in which animated Disney film?

Answer: The Lion King

Rafiki is modeled after a mandrill, but with some alterations, such as a much longer tail. He was voiced by Robert Guillaume in the 1994 animated film "The Lion King".

In "The Lion King", the king of the lions is killed by his scheming brother, and the young prince and heir is tricked into thinking he is responsible. The prince flees, but later returns to challenge his uncle for the kingdom.
9. Wishes come at a terrible price in "The Monkey's Paw", a 1902 short story from which author?

Answer: W. W. Jacobs

William Wymark "W. W." Jacobs (1863 - 1943) wrote mostly humorous stories, but his tale of the macabre featuring a mummified monkey's paw is one of his most famous works.

It told the story of the monkey's paw, an artifact that grants three wishes, albeit with severe consequences, Mr. White wishes to get the money to pay off his mortgage. His son then dies in an horrific accident at work, and the death benefit is the exact amount he wished for. Wishing for his deceased son to return to life, a knocking starts at the door. While his wife tries to open the door, Mr. White realizes that the thing at the door is not truly his son, who has been dead and buried for over a week, and makes his final wish. When his wife opens the door, no one is there.
10. "Amazing Live Sea-Monkeys" may be a novelty aquarium pet, but they aren't monkeys. What are they?

Answer: brine shrimp

Technically, Sea-Monkeys are an artificial hybrid species of brine shrimp called Artemis-NYOS, named after the New York Oceanic Society, the laboratory in Long Island where they were developed.

Harold von Braunhut (1926 - 2003) developed the product in 1957, realizing that the cryptobiosis ability that allowed the shrimp to survive periods of drought could be used to survive mail-order. von Braunhut worked with marine biologist Anthony D'Agostino to develop the brine shrimp and associated packets of water conditioner and food.

The initial sales of the product then called "Instant Life" were not encouraging, but re-branding under the name "Amazing Live Sea-Monkeys" alongside comic book ads drawn by Joe Orlando (1927 - 1998) made the product a success. Although people did complain that the shrimp looked nothing like the crowned pink humanoids in the ad.
