Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Anansi the spider is a clever trickster character from what region's mythology/folklore?

Answer: West African / Caribbean

Anansi's origins begin with the Ashanti people of what is now Ghana, before spreading to neighboring areas and later crossing the Atlantic as a result of the importation of slaves. The stories of Anansi were so important to the Ashanti that their word for any type of fables, Anansesem, means "spider tales".

Anansi is depicted as a spider, a man, or something in between. He also goes by many names, including Aunt Nancy.
2. Charlotte A. Cavatica is the eponymous spider of "Charlotte's Web" by E. B. White. What was the name of her pig friend?

Answer: Wilbur

E. B. White's (1899 - 1985) "Charlotte's Web" (1952) is a literary classic. In an attempt to save a friendly pig from being butchered, Charlotte the spider weaves words into her webs that make the pig too famous to be eaten.

White also revised "Elements of Style", first authored by William Strunk, Jr., (1869-1946), starting in 1959. This writing guide is one of the most influential books in the English language.
3. "The Godfather of Shock Rock" got his start as the lead singer of a 1960's garage band called The Spiders. Born Vincent Furnier, what is his stage name?

Answer: Alice Cooper

The Spiders started as The Earwigs in 1964, pantomiming the Beatles before learning to play instruments and touring as The Spiders. In 1967 they changed to Nazz before learning another band used that name and changing to Alice Cooper. Furnier eventually took that name for himself in the 1970s and started a solo career.
4. If you were using a spider wrench, what would you most likely be working on?

Answer: tires

A spider wrench is a type of lug wrench (called a wheel brace in some countries) used on lug nuts on automobile tires.

Unlike the wrench in the drawing, a spider wrench is shaped like a cross, with each of the four ends having a different sized socket.
5. A geographical feature on this planet's surface was nicknamed "the Spider" before being officially named the "Pantheon Fossae". Which planet has this feature?

Answer: Mercury

The Pantheon Fossae resembles the dome of the Pantheon, with sunken troughs or ridges radiating from a circular center. Built in 118-128 BC, the dome of the Pantheon remains the largest unreinforced concrete dome.
6. Do you like scary movies? This 1990 film has Jeff Daniels and John Goodman fighting thousands of spiders after an Amazonian spider finds its way to the US and mates with the locals. What movie is it?

Answer: Arachnophobia

The original "General" spider travels to the US after getting sealed in the coffin of a nature photographer.

"Arachnaphobia" is one of the early films in the special effects career of MythBusters star Jamie Hyneman.
7. If you were playing the card game "Spider", what type of game would you be playing?

Answer: Solitaire

Spider Solitaire is usually played with two decks of cards, but there are variants with more and fewer cards involved.

"Microsoft Spider Solitaire" was first included in "Window 98 Microsoft Plus!"
8. In the world of Harry Potter, a blind "acromantula" (a giant spider who can communicate with humans) lives in the Forbidden Forest. What is his name?

Answer: Aragog

Aragog first appears in JK Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets", during which it is revealed that the acromantula is the reason why Hagrid was expelled from Hogwarts as a student. When Tom Riddle originally opened the Chamber of Secrets and released the Basilisk, he was able to shift the blame on to Hagrid and Aragog. Hagrid helped Aragog escape to the Forbidden Forest, and was expelled as a result. Dumbledore, however, kept Hagrid on as Gamekeeper.

Hagrid was thus able to stay close to Aragog, and eventually brought him a mate, Mosag, which led to the Forbidden Forest becoming a home to a colony of acromantulas. In "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", Aragog has died and is given a funeral near Hagrid's cabin.
9. Peter Parker may be the Amazing Spider-Man, but what was the comic book where he made his first appearance?

Answer: Amazing Fantasy #15

The comic book "Amazing Adult Fantasy" was scheduled to be canceled with issue #15 (1962), so perhaps that is why the "Adult" was dropped from the name and Marvel took a risk on such an unlikely (at the time) hero. Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Peter Parker was a nerdy high school student who was bitten by a radioactive spider and gained super powers.

The character was very successful, and "The Amazing Spider-Man" #1 (1963) launched soon afterwards.
10. A 1966 Alfa Romeo Spider is the car featured in which 1967 film? (Hint: "Plastics.")

Answer: The Graduate

In 1967's "The Graduate", Benjamin Braddock (played by Dustin Hoffman) is seduced by an older woman, Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), before falling for her daughter. Needless to say, the affair complicates matters.

In several scenes, Hoffman is driving his car in the wrong direction for his supposed destination. When driving to Berkeley, he is driving on the upper level of the bridge, which leads away from Berkeley. And when driving south to Santa Barbara, he drives through a tunnel going north.
