quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Seen in the movie "Captain Phillips," the stimulant in qat is caffeine.

Answer: False

Qat contains a stimulant, but it's cathinone, not caffeine. Cathinone is a type of amphetamine that causes euphoria and excitement, and the consumption of qat has been compared to that of strong coffee. It is not believed to be particularly addictive, but is a controlled substance in some jurisdictions, like the United States. Qat is cultivated in the countries of the Horn of Africa, and is legally used there.

The Somali pirates in the movie "Captain Phillips" were portrayed as eating qat.
2. Often marked with a compass, qibla is the direction that one should face when praying towards what city?

Answer: Mecca

"Qibla" is the Arabic word for direction, and is used by Muslims to indicate the direction that they are supposed to pray towards five times per day. The qibla is supposed to point to the Kaaba, a building at the center of the Al-Masjid al-Haram mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Most mosques have niches which indicate the proper direction to pray. Qibla compasses provide a portable way of indicating the proper direction, and at least one country -- Niger -- has issued coins with qibla compasses built into them.
3. One could visit villages like Qaanaaq, Qaqortoq, and Qeqertarsuaq in what territory?

Answer: Greenland

Q is a fairly common letter in Greenlandic and other Eskimo-Aleut languages. In Greenlandic, it is one of just ten letters that can start a word (a, i, k, m, n, p, t, s, and u are the others) and there is no necessity to pair the q with u. Qaanaaq was established after the United States built the Thule Air Base and relocated the population in the area. Qaqortoq is the fourth-largest town in Greenland and located in the southern tip of the island. Qeqertarsuaq is located in the west and houses Arctic Station, a research facility run by the University of Copenhagen.
4. Described by Pliny the Elder and the etymological source of "Qatar," Catharrei was originally what?

Answer: nomadic tribe

As best as anyone can tell, the Catharrei were inhabitants of the small Arabian peninsula that is now Qatar back around the 1st Century, when Pliny the Elder wrote about them. Afterwards, the peninsula was called Catara, and was noted as having a town called Cadara towards the east.

The name was eventually adapted to Qatar. It became an independent nation in 1971 and exists as a constitutional monarchy. Despite being so small, it exerts a fair amount of influence on the world, as it has some of the world's largest oil and gas reserves.
5. Qi usually refers to life energy, but its more literal meaning is what?

Answer: breath

Considering your own immediate existence, it should be reasonable that your life most immediately comes from your breath, or air. Qi (pronounced "chi," as it's a Chinese word) is intended to represent the flow of energy through living beings. The concept of qi has been a common idea in Chinese philosophy for over 3,000 years, though its exact nature has varied and conflicted over the millennia.

The cosmic dualities formed by yin and yang are said to be the greatest of qi.
6. What company invented qiana, a variant of nylon?

Answer: Du Pont

Thirty years after causing a sensation with nylon, Du Pont introduced qiana, a variant of nylon with a silk-like appearance. Qiana was patented in 1962 and trademarked in 1968, when Du Pont unveiled it for use in high-end fashions. Disco suits in the 1970s were commonly made of qiana.
7. The Q in Qantas was originally part of an acronym that stood for what place?

Answer: Queensland

The world's third-oldest airline, Qantas started off as Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Limited. It was founded by four people in Winton, Queensland in 1920, with a single Avro 504K (one of which is pictured) that could carry a pilot and two passengers.

It began international operations in 1935, when planes started flying from Darwin to Singapore. Since then, Qantas has come to provide about two-thirds of Australia's domestic flight services and is symbolized with a stylized white kangaroo on a red background.
8. You may not think of it as such, but the ten nodes in this symbol is the qabbalah version of what popular mystic symbol?

Answer: Tree of Life

Qabbalah is a type of Jewish mysticism that is famous for its secrecy and is traditionally claimed to date back to the days of Eden. The universal archetype that you know as the Tree of Life is depicted here and is in fact the central symbol of Qabbalah.

It consists of the ten Sephirot, or "emanations" that God used to create the universe. Adherents to Qabbalah believe the tree diagrams how the universe came about with these emanations. The first and top-most is Keter, the crown, and completely incomprehensible to man.
9. The qapik is the subdivision of what currency that is used in Azerbaijan?

Answer: manat

When Azerbaijan became independent from the Soviet Union, it once again adopted the manat as its currency (it had also done so before it was part of the Soviet Union). Unlike the pre-Soviet days, Azerbaijan issued fractional currency, whose subunit became known as the qapik. Qapiks are rarely issued due to Azerbaijan's issues with inflation.

They were issued in 1992 and 1993, and again in 2006 (when the manat went through a reevaluation, with 5000 old manat becoming one new manat).
10. Even among the Inuit, qiviut is a rare and valuable wool that comes from what animal?

Answer: musk ox

Wool is usually obtained from sheep, goats, camels, or similar animals, and in the case of qiviut, it comes from musk oxen. Qiviut comes from the soft underlayer of wool of a musk ox, and is picked rather than sheared. Qiviut is a dry, high-density fiber that does not shrink in water. Domestication of musk oxen for qiviut does exist on small scales. Qiviut is pretty rare, and any clothing made from it is very expensive.
