Leslie Lynch King Jr. was born in Nebraska on July 14, 1913. His parents divorced shortly after he was born and his mother took him to Michigan. Two years later she married Gerald R. Ford Sr. and the family began calling him Gerald Ford Jr. He went to Michigan and studied law at Yale.

He also played football for the University of Michigan and was offered tryouts by the Bears and Lions. He served in the House of Representatives from 1948-1973. After Spiro Agnew resigned as Vice President in 1973, Richard Nixon nominated Ford as his Vice President. Nixon soon resigned over the Watergate scandal and Ford became the 38th President of the United States without ever having been elected.
