Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Johnny Carson hosted "The Tonight Show" from 1962-1992. He had one co-host, announcer and sidekick. Who was that?

Answer: Ed McMahon

Before "The Tonight Show," Ed McMahon was Johnny Carson's announcer on the TV game show "Who Do You Trust?" He had two shows of his own: "Star Search" and "Next Big Star." He pitched American Family Publishers sweepstakes and co-hosted Jerry Lewis's muscular dystrophy telethon.
2. Space aliens gave "The Greatest American Hero" (ABC 1981-1983) a red-and-black body suit which conferred super-human powers on him. Robert Culp played what FBI agent who was his sidekick in fighting crime and evil?

Answer: Bill Maxwell

William Katt's character, the fellow who got the suit, was known as Ralph Hinkley until John Hinckley Jr. attempted to assassinate Ronald Reagan on 30 March 1981. The lead's name was changed to Hanley for the remainder of the season and then changed back. Ralph lost the instructions to the suit so he had to discover its properties through trial and error. Culp played tennis-playing secret agent Kelly Robinson on "I Spy" (NBC, 1965-1968).
3. In the American movie "Pretty in Pink" (1986), who is Andie's (Molly Ringwald) best friend and sidekick?

Answer: Duckie

In "Pretty in Pink", the Brat Pack demonstrates its young acting skills. Jon Cryer plays Philip F. "Duckie" Dale - the good friend and secret admirer of Molly Ringwald's character, Andie. Rather like those books and movies which have alternate endings, a rich dork gets Andie at the end of the movie, but Duckie wins her heart in the H. B. Gilmour and Randi Reisfield (1986) novel on which it was based. Take your choice.
4. Over 4000 years ago, Gilgamesh was the King of Uruk. An epic legend arose around him in which his sidekick is a hairy-bodied muscular fellow named __________.

Answer: Enkidu

Gilgamesh was the epitome of men and was himself part god, according to the Epic of Gilgamesh. At first, Enkidu attempted to defeat and overthrow Gilgamesh but then they became friends and companions. There is an historical basis for the legend.
5. Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, appears with a sarcastic talking black cat in the television sit com (1996-2003). What is the feline familiar's name?

Answer: Salem Saberhagen

The legend of Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, and her two aunts Hilda and Zelda and Salem the cat, begins in the Archie comic book series in 1962. It became a live-action series on ABC-TV (and later the WB) (1996-2000; 2000-2003), a TV cartoon series, and a made-for-TV movie. Salem Saberhagen is a warlock who misbehaved (there are multiple backstories) and was turned into a cat for his sins. Salem was voiced by Nicholas "Nick" Bakay who was a writer on both the live-action and the animated series.
6. In the world of "Xena: Warrior Princess" (1995-2001), who was her protégé and sidekick?

Answer: Gabrielle

Gabrielle first appears as a young farm girl, rescued from slavery by Zena, but she grows to become proficient in the use of several weapons and in her ability to persuade others by her speech. By the end of the story arc, she is an Amazon warrior in her own right. She was played by Evelyn Renée O'Connor who went on to produce and direct for film and television.
7. Teen detective Nancy Drew is often accompanied/assisted by one or both of her sidekicks. Who are they?

Answer: Bess Marvin and George (Georgia) Fayne

Nancy Drew first appeared in 1930, the idea of publisher Edward Stratemeyer, who provided outlines to a number of freelance writers who all wrote under the pseudonym of Carolyn Keene. In a variety of forms, the series continues today. In addition to her boyfriend Ned Nickerson, Nancy is frequently assisted by her two girlfriends, as different from each other as two people can be: Bess is delicate and girly; George is athletic and a tomboy.
8. In the Okefenokee Swamp, Pogo is at the center of Walt Kelly's world of funny animals. Who is his cigar-smoking, braggadocious, bombastic sidekick?

Answer: Albert Alligator

The comic strip "Pogo" was created by Walt Kelly (1913-1973) in 1948 and ran until 1975, after his death. Pogo's friends and associates included Albert the Alligator, Churchy LaFemme (a turtle), Howland Owl, a hounddog named Beauregard, Porkypine and Miz Mamzelle Hepzibah (a skunk). Albert is outgoing where Pogo is reserved; Albert is brash where Pogo is modest. Albert thinks himself handsome and frequently says (when looking at himself in a mirror): "Funny how a good-lookin' fella look handsome in anything he throw on!"
9. Cow and her older brother are often entangled in misadventures with The Red Guy. Ostensibly siblings, who is Cow's older brother?

Answer: Chicken

It is unclear how a female cow and a male chicken can be siblings but, in the world of Hanna-Barbera, stranger things have happened. Created by David Feiss and (both) voiced by Charlie Adler, "Cow and Chicken" premiered in 1997 and were still being regularly programmed as late as 2014. Chicken was adamant that he is a "co-star" as opposed to a "sidekick."
10. Doctor Victor Frankenstein's laboratory assistant is named Fritz in the 1931 movie "Frankenstein" but what is his name in all of the adaptations thereafter?

Answer: Igor

Beginning with "Son of Frankenstein" (1939) and proceeding therefrom the mad doctor's sidekick is named Igor. His name is pronounced EE-gor in all of the films except Mel Brooks' "Young Frankenstein" (1974) where Marty Feldman's character is called EYE-gor (with reference to Feldman's wall-eyed google-eyed deformity. Igor (or Ygor) has numerous roles in these films: corpse exhumer, dyslexic, large-switch puller.
