Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the world of Harry Potter, which instructor at Hogwarts was a werewolf but not necessarily a bad guy?

Answer: Remus John Lupin

Lupin is a married male half-blood who was Professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts. Lupin became a werewolf during childhood, attended Hogwarts living in Gryffindor House, was a member of the original Order of the Phoenix and fought in the First Wizarding War. He taught Harry Potter but resigned after Severus Snape disclosed his lycanthropy. Harry was Lupin's son's godfather.
2. Wally Cox, the voice of Underdog on American TV cartoons, played which junior-high-school science teacher on a 1950s television series?

Answer: Mister Peepers

"Mister Peepers" (1952-1955) was an early sit-com success for NBC-TV. Cox was well-cast as the somewhat bumbling science teacher who was constantly getting into physical trouble. Tony Randall played a handsome and popular fellow teacher; Jack Warden played a coach. Cox was a regular contestant on "Hollywood Squares" from 1966 until 1977, the year of his death.
3. Which film, starring the "Brat Pack," detailed the experience of high school students given Saturday detention for various infractions?

Answer: The Breakfast Club

"The Breakfast Club" (1985) is a John Hughes movie with a catalogue of types ("A brain, a beauty, a jock, a rebel and a recluse") thrown together as an unlikely group in detention. The film starred Emilio Estevez, Paul Gleason, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy. Paul Gleason was well cast as Assistant Principal Vernon.

When sassed by one of the students, he imposed additional detention and said, "Don't mess with the bull, young man - you'll get the horns."
4. Sidney Poitier played Mark Thackery, a high school teacher from British Guiana trying to teach uncooperative and disrespectful students in the East End of London, in which 1967 British motion picture?

Answer: To Sir with Love

The British pop singer Lulu both sang the theme song ("To Sir with Love") and acted in this 1967 British high-school drama. James Clavell's screenplay moves issues of race and inner-city poverty to the forefront; the script was based on a 1959 novel ("To Sir with Love") by E. R. Braithwaite. Sydney Poitier starred as the challenged teacher. He reprised his role in the made-for-TV movie "To Sir, with Love II" in 1996, which was not nearly as successful.
5. America watched Cory Matthews grow up on the TV series "Boy Meets World." Who was the teacher/principal/professor who followed the cast through their education?

Answer: Mister Feeny

The show begins in middle school where the gang are sixth graders. William Daniels plays Mister George Feeny, their longtime teacher. The programme progresses through seven seasons (1993-2000); Mister Feeny becomes their high school principal and, when they move on to Pennbrook University, he becomes a professor there. The show was followed by a three-season sequel, "Girl Meets World" (2014-2017), in which Daniels reprised his role. Daniels also played the voice of KITT on "Knight Rider" and Dr. Mark Craig on "Saint Elsewhere."
6. According to the 1940 hit song "Six Lessons from Madame La Zonga," what does Madame La Zonga teach?

Answer: Ballroom dancing

The 1941 American comedy motion picture "Six Lessons from Madame La Zonga" is only loosely based on the 1941 song of the same name. In the original song, she ran a dance studio "on Maine Street over Tony's Clothing Store" with her four daughters. In the movie, she owned a nightclub in Havana, Cuba. The song was made popular by singer Helen O'Connell and the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra. The movie was directed by John Rawlins and starred Lupe Vélez. The film is zany; the song isn't all that staid.
7. The story of a female teacher in a conservative girls' school in Scotland was a successful novel, play, motion picture and television mini-series. Who was she?

Answer: Miss Jean Brodie

Muriel Spark's novel "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" was first published in The New Yorker Magazine. Macmillan then published it in book form in 1961. Vanessa Redgrave played Jean Brodie in a London stage version in 1966. She turned down the chance to reprise her role on Broadway in 1968; Zoe Caldwell won the Tony Award for the part. Redgrave again turned down the role in the 1969 film; Maggie Smith won the Academy Award for Best Actress for the part. Scottish TV produced a seven-part mini-series in 1978; Geraldine McEwan won the Times of London award for Best TV Actress.
8. The school teacher Holofernes is pompous, loquacious, boastful, smug and pedantic in which of William Shakespeare's comedies?

Answer: Loves Labour Lost

Although Holofernes (and his counterpart, the curate Nathaniel) don't appear until Act IV, they epitomize the worst of education and learning. Holofernes is talkative; he uses a string of synonyms where one word would suffice, e.g. "'Welkin, the heaven; and anon falleth like a crab on the face of terra, the soil, the land, the earth." (Act IV, ii, 3-7) The King of Navarre declares a period of study for his kingdom for three years' time, to the exclusion of all physical pleasures. Holofernes and Nathaniel delight in their prominence in such an arrangement, insisting on enlightening all manner of people uninterested in being enlightened.
9. Roald Dahl is the author of many wonderful books involving children. In his novel "Matilda," who is the protagonist's teacher who ends up being her step-parent or guardian?

Answer: Miss Honey

Roald Dahl's 1988 novel "Matilda" won the British Children's Book Award in 1999. In it, precocious young Matilda Wormwood is abandoned by her parents (who flee town to avoid arrest for auto theft) and is happily taken in by her favourite teacher Miss Honey. Miss Agatha Trunchbull is the evil headmistress at Matilda's school.

The book has been widely adapted. Kate Winslet recorded a four-hour reading of it. Danny DeVito directed, narrated and appeared in a motion picture version in 1996. BBC Radio produced a two-part version, narrated by Lenny Henry. "Matilda the Musical" was produced in London in 2011 and went on to travel the world for many years.
10. "Hey, hey, hey, what is going on here?" asks the principal in TV's "Saved by the Bell." Who was this principal of Bayside High School, portrayed by Dennis Haskins?

Answer: Mister Belding

Richard Belding first appeared in the pilot for "Good Morning, Miss Bliss" (1988-1989) which was the forerunner to "Saved by the Bell" (1989-1992). He was both antagonist to the young ensemble and friend-confidante to them. He reprised his role in "Saved by the Bell: The New Class" (1993-2000); he was the only cast member to appear in all 143 episodes of the sequel.
