Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On the "Rocky and Bullwinkle Show" (NBC-TV 1959-1964), what was the name of the institution of higher learning attended by the moose on a football scholarship?

Answer: Wossamotta U

Football scouts spotted Bullwinkle throwing Rocky around (for fun) and recruited them both to play football at Wossamotta U. Bullwinkle revived a failing football programme and was a hero. The alma mater of the school includes the line "Our praise for you will never cease. / All hail magenta and cerise." The school name is a mondegreen of "what's the matter [with] you?" At Universal Studios in Orlando, there is a Wossamotta U Stadium which is a Rocky-and-Bullwinkle themed gift shop which is also an Internet hot-spot and cell-phone charging station.
2. Robin Williams plays John Keating, an English instructor, at which elite conservative boarding school in Vermont in the film "Dead Poets Society" (1989)?

Answer: Welton Academy

Under the "Four Pillars" -- "Tradition," "Discipline," "Honor" and "Excellence"-- the boys of Welton Academy move toward Ivy League colleges and the careers of the privileged. Welton is all about ritual and appearances: the bagpipes, the candle ceremonies, the flags, the moss-covered brick. Scriptwriter Tom Schulman based much of the film on his own school days at the Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tennessee.

The motion picture was shot, in part, at St. Andrew's School in Middletown, Delaware.
3. Antonia Forest wrote a dozen books about the Marlow family (1948-1982), especially about the identical twins Nicola and Laurie as they matriculate at what school?

Answer: Kingscote School for Girls

The Kingscote School for Girls is an English boarding school patterned, in part, on the author's own South Hampstead High School. Kingscote is located in Wade Abbas, the see of Wade Minster, a cathedral. The church may have been based on Chichester Cathedral.

The first novel, "Autumn Term," begins the series, four of which are set in the school: "End of Term (1959), "The Cricket Term" (1974) and "The Attic Term" (1976).
4. In American television's "The Vampire Diaries" (2009-2017), at which school did the supernatural goings-on go on?

Answer: Mystic Falls High School

Rather like the high school in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," Mystic Falls High School is located at a junction where the forces of good and evil, natural and supernatural, collide and conflict. The television series "The Vampire Diaries" was based on a series of books written by J.L. Smith. It ran for eight seasons (2009-2017). Set in Virginia, the series was filmed primarily in Georgia.
5. In Richard Brinsley Sheridan's play "The School for Scandal" (1777), where is the titular school building located?

Answer: There is no physical school

In the prologue to Sheridan's play, the narrator says "A School for Scandal! tell me, I beseech you, needs there a school this modish art to teach you? No need of lessons now, the knowing think; We might as well be taught to eat and drink." Sheridan's play is a comedy of manners which highly entertained 18th Century audiences and is still pretty funny.

It is also naughty. Unlike Protestant morality plays in which society is pure and good, "School for Scandal" depicts people whose corrupt natures allow them to lie, cheat and steal to accomplish their selfish desires.

The characters'' names suggest something about them which will figure in the play, e.g. the Surface Family, Lady Sneerwell, Mrs. Candour and Snake.
6. The film "10 Things I Hate About You" (1999) was set at fictional Padua High located in Seattle, Washington, but all of the castle-like school exteriors were shot at Stadium High School in which nearby city?

Answer: Tacoma, Washington

Stadium High School was built in 1891 as a luxury hotel (hence the hilltop view of Commencement Bay) but burned in 1898 leaving the beautiful brick structure. The Tacoma School District bought the building and renovated it as a school. Then called Tacoma High School, it opened in 1906 and was renamed Stadium High School in 1913 with reference to the Stadium Bowl which figures significantly in the movie. Tacoma is a half-hour drive south of Seattle where the rest of the film was shot, e.g. the park scenes were filmed in the Queen Anne Neighbourhood and the prom at the Paramount Theatre.
7. "Blue Mountain State" is which of the following?

Answer: a television series and a movie

"Blue Mountain State" premiered on US and Canadian television in 2010 and ran three seasons before being cancelled. Disappointed fans raised $1.5 million on Kickstarter to make a movie sequel. The movie was released to theatres and to Netflix in 2016.

The series is about students at a fictional university called Blue Mountain State, the home of The Mountain Goats. One of the principal players is a football star who is drafted by the NFL. The stories are replete with sex, drugs and alcohol.
8. The motion picture "Real Genius" (1985) takes place on the campus of a science, technology and engineering institution similar to M.I.T. of what name?

Answer: Pacific Tech

Val Kilmer plays a boy genius who becomes involved in secret laser work for the CIA at Pacific Technical Institute. Once the young scholars become aware of how they are being used in weapons development, they turn the tables on their professor by focusing the laser on his house and using it to heat a gigantic container of popcorn inside such that it pushes the walls and roof apart. William Atherton, who plays the evil professor, has an extensive history of film, stage and television credits. Actual real-life CalTech students played extras in the movie.
9. In Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game" science-fiction novel (1985), what is the name of the space station orbiting Earth where the brightest and best of children are taught traditional subjects but also prepared to be warriors?

Answer: Battle School

Threatened by the Formics, the International Fleet prepares young people to fight them in the final conflict. In addition to all the normal curriculum, the students study battle tactics in Battle Rooms where they experience weightlessness. The place is called Battle School because the final battle is the primary reason for its existence: Earth's last and greatest hope against the Formics.

The Formics, also known as Buggers, are an insectoid race which lives in underground colonies. At the time of the central novel to the series, there were about 650 students in Battle School.
10. Comedian Gabe Kaplan turned his stand-up routine about his experiences at New Utrecht High School, Bensonhurst, into a TV sitcom set at James Buchanan High School, Brooklyn, named what?

Answer: Welcome Back, Kotter

The show starred stand-up comedian and actor Gabriel 'Gabe' Kaplan as the title character, Gabe Kotter, a wisecracking teacher. He returns to his alma mater, James Buchanan High School in Brooklyn, New York, to teach a remedial class of loafers, called "Sweathogs." Kotter's class is held in Room 11.

The picture of a school shown behind the opening credits of the programme was of New Utrecht High.
