Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do" is the first line of a song released in 1968. Who wrote it?

Answer: Harry Nilsson

Nilsson also recorded the song "One" on his album "Aerial Ballet", but it was the group Three Dog Night who later took the song to number one on the charts in 1969. The inspiration behind Nilsson's writing of the song was the busy signal he got when trying to phone someone one day. Apparently he then kept listening to the beep while he composed. John Farnham from Australia also released it in the same year and it reached No.4 in the Australian charts.
2. "It takes two to tango" is a common expression used in everyday language, and indeed it does. In what country did this dance first become popular?

Answer: Argentina

The tango is dance music which sprang to life in the form we recognise it today in the Argentine at the end of the 19th century. Performed with a strong 4/4 beat, it grew in popularity and spread world wide. It was actually banned in many places for some time, because it was considered way too passionate and improper and prone to inflaming the senses.
3. The human ear has three semicircular canals and three ossicles. What are ossicles?

Answer: Bones

Ossicles are the smallest bones in the human body. Located in the middle section, the ossicles transmit sounds to the ear's cochlea. This in turn sends the signals to thousands of auditory nerve cells in the brain. The ear is an amazing piece of human architecture really.
4. What is the fourth astrological sign of the Zodiac?

Answer: Cancer

The Cancer zodiac sign period spans 21 June to 23 July each year. It is a water sign, ruled by the moon, and is considered to be one of the feminine houses. People born under this sign are compatible with Scorpio and Pisces, and get along comfortably with those who are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.

They're very family oriented, nurturing and caring, and their home is a place of refuge and love. Gentle by nature, they hide their emotions well, but if pushed to the extreme, those nippers are capable of giving quite a pinch.

They're also somewhat inclined to be untidy.
5. What is the fifth book of the Old Testament?

Answer: Deuteronomy

These five are known as the Torah or the Book of Moses or the Pentateuch (the five cases in which the books were held). Five is one of those numbers which recurs throughout various religions. Jesus Christ had five wounds during his crucifixion, the Psalms are broken down into five books, the five-sided Khamsa is a symbol used in Jewish and Arabic cultures to protect against the evil eye, Muslims pray to God five times daily, there are five sacred Sikh symbols - and so on.
6. Which sport uses a boundary shot worth six points?

Answer: Cricket

The boundary shot value is earned when the batsman whacks the ball over the boundary line of the cricket field without the ball bouncing on the ground along the way. A four makes it to the boundary but has hit the ground along the way. Individual runs are accumulated the hard way - by the batsmen puffing up and down on the pitch while trying to avoid being run out. If you're a cricket fan, cricket is a great game to watch. If you're a non-cricket fan with insomnia, cricket is also a great game to watch - as well as being a miraculous cure.
7. Most people know Rome was built on seven hills, but do they also know another ancient city of the times was also built on seven hills. Can you name it?

Answer: Istanbul

Known as Byzantium then, the seven hills of Istanbul were all contained within the walls of the city. They include the first hill where the main part of Byzantium city was built, with the second hill containing the Nuruosmaniye Mosque, Grand Bazaar and Column of Constantine.

The third hill holds the Istanbul university today, while the fourth held the Church of the Holy Apostles. The fifth has another Mosque, the sixth split into surburban districts, while the seventh extended down to the external defense walls and the Marmara Sea.
8. Eight is the atomic number of which element? (You'll gasp when you find out.)

Answer: Oxygen

Oxygen is third in the list of abundant elements in the universe. It comes in after Hydrogen and Helium. It makes up half of our earth's crust and most of the mass of water. Oxygen was "discovered" initially by a Swedish chemist named Carl Wilhelm Scheele in 1772. Scheele's findings were built upon by English cleric Joseph Priestly in 1774 when he created oxygen by focusing sunlight on mercuric oxide.

This released a gas which he called dephlogisticated air. He breathed in this gas and wrote in his notes that "The feeling of it to my lungs was not sensibly different from that of common air, but I fancied that my breast felt peculiarly light and easy for some time afterwards".

It is Priestly rather than Scheele who has gained the nod in history for the discovery of oxygen.
9. In the game of rugby league, which player with an arresting name is usually accorded number nine?

Answer: The Hooker

What a naughty word. However, back to the quiz: Rugby League is a contact sport which I absolutely detest. It's played between two teams of thirteen players who basically chase a ball - that isn't really a ball at all - up and down a field, while trying to get it across the line at opposite ends of the field.

It's been described as the "toughest, most physically demanding" of all team contact sport. You can say that again, Cecil.
10. Which actress starred opposite Dudley Moore in the romantic comedy film "10" (1979)?

Answer: Bo Derek

The plot of this film centres around the mid-life crisis of a well known composer George Webber, played by Dudley Moore. George is in a very comfortably relationship with Samantha (Julie Andrews) but he has become enthralled by a woman whom he sees on her way to her wedding.

This is Jenny Miles, played by Bo Derek. A series of hilarious incidents follow in which George becomes totally disillusioned with Jenny, who has ended up in his bed, and is resolved by his returning to the comfort and safety of Samantha's arms.

The original parts of George and Samantha were offered to George Segal and Shirley MacLaine, and that of Jenny to Melanie Griffith. The three stars who eventually gained the roles did a brilliant job, with Dudley Moore in particular putting in a side-splitting performance.
