Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Animals: Which of the following animals is NOT a Lazarus species?

Answer: Bluebuck

A Lazarus species is a species that was once believed to be extinct but then was rediscovered a later time, similar to the biblical story of Lazarus whom Jesus raised from the dead. The most famous Lazarus species may be the coelacanth, a deep sea fish that lives in the Indian Ocean. Coelacanths were believed to have been extinct for tens of millions of years until they were discovered again in 1938. The Mountain pygmy possum is endemic to Australia. The Monito del monte is a tiny possum-like creature that lives in South America. Both have similar stories but were believed to be extinct for much shorter a time than the coelacanth.

The bluebuck was a large antelope-like mammal that lived in South Africa but went extinct in 1799 or 1800. At the time of its extinction, it was believed to be the largest land mammal in Africa to become extinct.

Answer: Potato chips

The "Bailey School Kids" series of books features four 3rd grade students, Eddie, Howie, Liza and Melody, as they investigate the mysterious adults in town, many of whom they believe could be some kind of legendary creature. 6. General: Anne Boleyn, Margaret Pole and Lady Jane Grey are some of the famous beheaded women who are said to haunt which landmark?

Answer: The Tower of London

All of the women were beheaded on charges of treason; historians mostly agree that all or most of the charges were fabricated for political reasons. Because of the number of executions that took place at the Tower of London, ghost sightings are fairly common. Anne Boleyn (and others) are said to be seen carrying their heads in their hands as they walk the grounds.

Other people said to haunt the Tower of London are King Henry VI and the Princes in the Tower (Edward V and Richard of Shrewsbury).
7. Geography: Iditarod, Kennecott and Tin City are three of the many ghost towns that can be visited in which U.S. state?

Answer: Alaska

Strictly speaking, a ghost town does not technically have to be totally abandoned. For instance, there are a number of ghost towns in the United States with single digit populations. Alaska and other western states tend to have more ghost towns than other U.S. states because many were settled during gold rushes in the 19th century and quickly abandoned by failed prospectors.

Many of these ghost towns are historic sites that can be visited by tourists.

Answer: Dolley Madison

Dolley Madison was one of the most popular first ladies of all time, if not the most popular. She was primarily responsible for transforming Washington D.C. into the cosmopolitan town it is today by making the White House and other places a scene of social gatherings and parties. When the White House was burned down during the War of 1812, Dolley helped plan its rebuilding, even after her husband left office. She was chiefly responsible for building the Rose Garden and her ghost is said to haunt the garden to protect it from those who wish to destroy it.

When Mrs. Wilson asked the White House gardeners to dig up the garden, they refused to even try because they were afraid Mrs. Madison's ghost.

Ouija is considered taboo in many Christian cultures and in scientific communities, where it is often called pseudoscience.

During "Ghosts" Oswald's mother, Helene, is worried that her son will inherit the sins of his father, a philanderer. She gives away all of her late husband's possessions and previously sent Oswald away so he would inherit nothing from his father. However, Oswald falls in love with a young lady named Regina who, unbeknownst to him, is actually his half-sister.

The Betsy Ross House on Arch Street is the house where she is said to have designed the flag. It is located in the heart of Philadelphia near other historic buildings like Independence Hall.

Visitors to Betsy Ross House have claimed to see and hear Betsy Ross crying at the foot of her bed, apparently in reference to her late husband who was killed in an explosion. The building is considered one of the scariest and most haunted places in Philadelphia.
15. Religion: Which Irish saint and martyr is the patron of ghost hunters because she had a reputation of being a demon slayer during her lifetime?

Answer: Saint Dymphna

Many ghost hunters carry a pendant of Saint Dymphna with them on their adventures for protection. Saint Dymphna herself had a reputation for being a demon fighter. She was murdered by her father after she refused to marry and instead dedicated her life to God. She is also the patron saint of the mentally ill.
16. Science and Technology: In 2014, scientists in Switzerland were able to convince their human guinea pigs that ghosts were in the room with them by doing what?

Answer: By stimulating the portion of the brain that helps identify oneself

In the experiment, scientists stimulated the left temporal junction of the brain, which is responsible for creating a sense of self presence. Afterwards, the subjects reported seeing "shadow people" who mimicked their every move. This was because the part of the brain that allowed for physical self awareness was confused and replicated the person before their eyes. All of the subjects in the experiment had some kind of neurological disorder.

In another experiment with healthy subjects, only some of the people reported a ghostly presence of some sort. One of the interesting conclusions in that experiment (which was conducted slightly differently) was that even the suggestion of a ghost in the room was enough for some people's brains to "go haywire" and believe they saw a ghost. In this experiment, the subjects were asked to move their arms like a robot which was then immediately mimicked on the subject's back. When that happened, everything was normal. However, when the robot's movements were slowed down or delayed, that is when people started feeling the ghostly presence.

The conclusion of the experiments was that ghosts may very well be a figment of our imagination when the left temporal junction of our brains starts acting differently and confuses our movements and self presence. This could explain why we believe see ghosts in a haunted house or a cemetery because that area of our brain can be affected by many different emotions, the most common being fear.
