Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. These two horrible sisters were known for their selfish, bullying behaviour to a poor, downtrodden little family member. However, like in all good fairy tales, they soon got their just desserts. Can you stop booing them long enough to tell me who they are both popularly known as?

Answer: The Ugly Sisters

It seems that the story of Cinderella dates back even to the days of ancient history, and appears throughout different cultures. The most popular version is by Charles Perrault, the French writer of fairy stories, written in the 17th century.
2. This Irish writer, together with Lady Gregory, co-founded the Irish theatre. Who was he?

Answer: William Butler Yeats

Later, the Irish Theatre became the internationally famous Abbey Theatre. Yeats was the main playwright until John Synge joined them. Yeats plays dealt mainly with Irish myths and legends, a theme which he came to explore more in his poetry.
3. These two horrors were involved with kidnapping puppies-aah! Poor Pongo and his friends searched high and low for his baby dalmatians. Happily these inept robbers were foiled and Cruella de Vil had to go coatless. What were these villains names?

Answer: Jasper and Horace Badun

One Hundred and One Dalmatians is still a great Disney favourite. MacDonalds released a line of them to give away with Happy Meals. They have now become highly sought after collectibles and valuable if you have the complete set so I've been told.
4. Richard "Dick" Hickock and Perry Smith were two real life murderers who became the subject of a famous book by Truman Capote. What was the book titled?

Answer: In Cold Blood

Capote wrote this book about the ruthless murders of Rancher Herbert Clutter, his wife and two of their children. He travelled to Kansas with his friend, Harper Lee (author of "To kill a Mockingbird") to interview locals about the crime. Spending many hours with the killers in their prison, and after six years in the writing, he published "In Cold Blood". Describing it himself as 'non-fiction' he started the trend for true-crime writing.
5. W.C.Sellar and R.J.Yeatman 'conspired' together to write a very humorous potted version of the history of England. What is its title?

Answer: 1066 and All That

"1066 and All That: A Memorable History of England, Comprising All the Parts You Can Remember, Including 103 Good Things, 5 Bad Kings and 2 Genuine Dates" is the full title, although for obvious reasons it is usually referred to as "1066 and All That." Published in England in 1930, the book is still in print. It takes a wry look at how stuffily History was taught at the time of writing.

"Goodbye to All That" by Robert Graves, in contrast, is an account of his life as an Officer in the trenches during WW1. Beautifully written, anti- war and very moving.

"History is more or less bunk." is of course a famous quote of Henry Ford

"Hysterical Histrionics" is my own creation-I know that because it doesn't appear on Google, so I must have made it up!
6. British comedian Eric Sykes created a wonderful domestic comedy series about his sister, Hat (played by the great Hattie Jacques) and himself. The two got up to some hilarious antics. They made friends with the local friendly policeman, what was his name?

Answer: P.C. Wilfred 'Corky' Turnbull

Played by Deryck Guyler, a Liverpool-born actor who also played a mean washboard (as in skiffle) P.C. Corky was always happy to drop in for a cup of tea and get off the streets. Clips of these shows are available on You tube.
7. One night in 1952 in Croydon, England, these two friends set out to commit a robbery that ended in the shooting of a police officer. However the one who didn't pull the trigger was hanged. Who was this infamous pair?

Answer: Craig and Bentley

Although it was Christopher Craig who fired the shot, it was Derek Bentley who was executed for the murder. Craig was 16 yrs old and deemed too young for the death penalty; Bentley was 19 yrs old. Despite having a mental age of 11 and clearly not able to fully follow what was happening at his trial, he was found guilty and hanged. After years of tireless campaigning by his sister and family, he was finally given a posthumous pardon in 1998.
8. This long established motor car manufacturer's Company Charter stated it would produce engines for use "on land or water or in the air." Which company is this?

Answer: Rolls Royce Company

"At their first meeting, Royce took Rolls for a spin in the car. Legend has it that as he climbed aboard, Rolls asked Royce to "start her up." Royce replied, "My dear fellow, she's already running!" Soon after, they reached an agreement that Royce Limited would manufacture a range of cars to be sold exclusively by CS Rolls & Company. The success of these Rolls-Royce cars led to the formation of the Rolls-Royce Company just two years later - in 1906."

9. This tiny pop duo had a string of hits (and they showed!) making cover versions of other peoples records. Having extremely high falsetto voices, they were a particular favourite with U.K. kids who loved their TV shows. Who were this rather hammy pair?

Answer: Pinky and Perky

Created by a Czech refugee couple, they first appeared on British screens in 1959. Despite, or maybe because of the simplicity of the wooden puppets and the records played at twice the speed to give that 'unique' sound, they became a huge success. You tube has their unforgettable version of "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines", just the thing to cheer us up.
10. Our final pair-a couple of star-crossed lovers! Yes, poor Romeo and his unhappy Juliet. But don't forget for a brief time they were happy newly weds-who was the priest who performed their marriage ceremony?

Answer: Friar Lawrence

He decides to perform the marriage in the vain hope it will end the feud between the two families. Later on it is he who administers the drug to Juliet, feigning her death. His letter explaining the true situation never reaches Romeo and so the full tragic train of events is started by his actions.
