The Pleiades (Messier 45) form an open star cluster clearly visible in the night sky. The mythical sisters for whom they are named - Maia, Electra, Taygete, Alcyone, Celaeno, Sterope and Merope - were nymphs in Artemis' train and nursemaids to the infant Bacchus.
